"The Brotherhood of the..." Seamus said the words slowly, as if trying to make them sound less ridiculous - but it didn't work. "No, I'm not surprised that no good at being dark wizards with a name like that." He shook his head. "Still glad you're around to keep them at bay, though." If Seamus never had to face another dark wizard in his entire life it would be too soon. He hugely admired and respected those of his classmates who'd decided to go into the job full time - he wouldn't have been able to do it.

He snorted. "Turning someone into a gazelle... isn't exactly dark," he observed. "Did you manage to fix it? I mean, London isn't very gazelle-friendly."

Susan smiled affectionately at Seamus. "The Brotherhood of the Uncompromising Parallels apparently believe that the Universe was meant to be destroyed two years ago, and have been trying to return it to that state ever since. They're a bunch of nutters basically," she said, sliding her glass back towards Seamus with a significant look. "Never fear though darling, I'm always here to keep them at bay for you."

With a grimace, she leant back slightly. "We un-transfigured Witherspoon easily, once we got to her," she replied with a wince. "But before we got to her, she panicked and bolted outside. Into traffic and Muggle onlookers. In Pimlico."

Seamus raised his sandy eyebrows. "Just two?" He couldn't remember anything world-ending that had been impending two years ago... In fact, it had been around the time Monument Alley had been established and Seamus had set up the pub. "What did I do to push them off so bad?" he asked, grinning.

As Susan furnished more details, Seamus winced. "Obliviators all over the place?" he asked in sympathy. Inter-departmental communication at the Ministry sounded like a nightmare from everything Seamus had heard.

"Indeed, exactly two years ago! But not," she added with a would-be-reproving look at her friend, "because Finnigan's opened. Apparently they deeply believed that all the various genocidal idiots in Wizarding history would coalesce in the ether into a single, super-concentrated spirit of intense malevolence and attach itself to a chinchilla in the West Country known as Mister Bubbles, who would then destroy the world. Apparently they were very put out when this, surprisingly didn't happen."

Susan groaned and put her head down on the bar. "It was a nightmare," she said, shuddering slightly. "An alpaca isn't particularly alarming, but we still needed a couple of Oblivators to convince everyone that one of the old biddies in the building we were in kept an illegal zoo. I've been putting out fires from level three all morning from self-important imbeciles who want me to personally explain why Oblivators were needed for a standard operation in the first place."

"Anyway," she said sitting up and smiling at him. "How are you, love? Anything interesting to report?"

For a long moment Seamus was speechless, his expression an equal mix of horror and confusion. "A chinchilla, in the West Country, called Mister Bubbles?" he repeated, wondering if Susan had fallen asleep at her desk. "They sound like lunatics." He wasn't sure whether that made them more or less dangerous. Though, if their preferred tactic was to transfigure people into improbable animals it didn't seem like they were too huge of a threat.

When she lay her head down, Seamus patted her bright hair. "Hang on, an alpaca? Where did an alpaca come in?!" He held a hand up to stop Susan before she could answer. "No, no. This sounds like the kind of story you should tell from the beginning, and I think you should save it for Sunday." He waggled his eyebrows at her in a way that was clearly intended to be conspiratorial.

"Me? Not much. Journals work, Dean came by, we ate some of Chef's dodgy cooking." That had been pretty much his day so far, but he was happy with that.

Susan smirked at the expression on Seamus' face. "A chincilla, in the West Country, called Mister Bubbles," she confirmed, not without a small amount of relish - there were times, she had to admit where her job proved an excellent source of amusement. "They were completely and utterly bonkers, though not really all that much of a threat."

Susan groaned again, she hadn't meant to mention the fact that on top of Witherspoon being turned into a gazelle, one of the brotherhood - obviously an unregistered animagus - had transformed into an alpaca in a fruitless bid to escape and/or saddle Susan with a number of shrill interdepartmental memos from the third floor. "Fine, fine," she said, holding her hands up in defeat. "I'll relay the story of aplaca on Sunday!"

"Oh good," Susan said with a bright smile. "You both remembered to eat! I do like it when you both do that, stops me having to mother you. I do wonder why you haven't fired the Chef though, honestly Seamus, what did he do this time? Put arsenic in the stroganoff?"

Seamus rolled his eyes, as he always did as Susan's mothering. "We both have mams of our own to look after us, you know," he pointed out. "And they're worse than you!" About the food and the insistence that the two of them ought to be together. The thought took Seamus back to Dean's (mildly tortured) declaration that he loved Seamus more than West Ham and he smiled.

"Close enough. Chilli powder instead of paprika. It was... an experience." He met her eyes with a grin. "There's probably some left." He was seriously thinking about the best thing to do with Chef. Some kind of disciplinary or written warning? Help him work out a better labelling system? Start docking his wages for unservable meals? These were all options, Seamus needed to sleep on it.

"I know you have mum's silly, I just like to make sure I won't find you both huddled together dying from starvation because you're both too engrossed in your work to remember to eat," she said with a laugh, pretending that it hadn't in fact crossed her mind before - particularly after an episode last year where they'd both forgotten to eat for two days.

"That... How... Okay yes, paprika and chilli powder are both red BUT STILL!" She looked at Seamus askance, wondering if she needed to have a word with Dean about getting Seamus to assert himself more with his staff. "You have to make sure he's not taking advantage Seamus," she said seriously.

"Never gonna happen," Seamus assured her. "We keep each other fed, mostly." At least, they did when their work commitments didn't happen to coincide. In the last year, the pub had got busier and busier - but that seemed to mean Seamus had less work to do. Or, at least, less of the kind of work that left him hunched in his office so focused he lost track of time. He worried less, too, about what would happen if this all fell out from under him.

He shrugged. "No one's taking advantage. I'll have a word." Once he'd decided what to do. A customer caught his eye and Seamus stepped away to relay an order to the kitchen before coming back to where Susan was waiting. "Besides, you've had his roast beef. It's incredible."

"Of course you do, at least when you both aren't distracted by your jobs," she said dryly, before holding her hands up to forestall any arguments on Seamus' part. "I only mother you because I care about you, and it makes me feel like a normal human being."

Susan smiled wryly as Seamus stepped away to take an order, marvelling at how well he ran the place, and how suited he was to the job. "I will admit that his roast beef is incredible but just..." she sighed, deciding to let the topic drop. "Anyway darling," she said, pulling out her watch and grimacing at the time. "As much as I'd love to sit here and chat with you all night, I should probably head home and have some sleep - I'll get grilled tomorrow." She leant over the counter and kissed Seamus on the cheek. "Have a good night, dear."
