With sound that was part groan and part chuckle Melinda rubbed her forehead as she shook her head. Now that she had said it aloud it seemed silly, foolish even, though no less of a turn-off than it had been yesterday. It did, however, didn’t seem quite as horrifying as it had when it had caused her to get up and leave the restaurant in the middle of dinner.

“He’s a friend of my cousin, and he was really sweet when I met him at his birthday party last weekend, so why shouldn’t I say yes when he asked me out?” With a shrug she chuckled again, this time much more relaxed. “Please tell me your weekend’s been better.”

Cho shook her head and half-sympathetically, half-sarcastically pat Melinda's shoulder. "There, there, now you know better. Family friends are usually a bad idea, in general, just trust me."

Shrugging and reaching for her cocktail again - having waited for the rest of the story after the big reveal - and taking a drink before answering. "I worked. Had a magic/muggle wedding in Cambridge Saturday afternoon and spent yesterday with Amanda and Carmen doing the fall schedule. We had to turn down events this time around, believe it or not, Carmen keeps telling me I should hire more, but with Amanda's time free and Carmen and I full time we make plenty to stay afloat, you know?" The possible expansion of the business had been on Cho's mind for a while but she just didn't know if she was ready.

“I know,” Melinda said with an amused roll of her eyes. “I believe you, I trust you.” It really was amazing how just telling Cho what had happened had taken the edge off and brought her right back down where she could think clearly again and see that she should have seen the warning signs a week ago.

Crossing her legs, she sipped from her drink, listening to Cho. “Wow.” Melinda’s eyes opened wide. “Not that I’m doubting your decision, but I think Carmen may be on to something.” To her it didn’t sound like a bad idea at all. An employee or two more meant that Cho could handle more events which in turn would mean that the business would do more than just ‘stay afloat’, and from there it was a short step to being able to rent a place and get the business out of Cho’s flat, which would make it easier for Cho to gear down when she was home. “You know, there are still office spaces available here. You won’t find a place with lower rent to get started.”

Cho nodded her head and gave Melinda a satisfied smile. When would people learn that she was always right? Well, about other people's love lives, not so much her own of course.

Listening to Mel rationalize, though, Cho couldn't help but roll her eyes. "You sound just like Carmen, and I don't mean that as a compliment. I'd have to have capital to start all of that - to put down first and last on a space, and to pay salary while we get going on the new events. Even hiring Carmen gave me nervous sweats and sleepless nights at first." She shook her head, "No, I just don't think we're ready. And in the meantime if I have to I'll just work more hours, do more of the events myself," in truth it was the giving up control that tortured her. Every event had to be perfect and how could she know it was unless she was there and in charge of it?

The far too pleased and satisfied smile on Cho’s face had Melinda chuckle into her drink.

“Well, I’m taking it as a compliment,” Melinda shot back kindly. It would be a big step for Cho. It had been a big step for her when she had opened Sweet Nothings, and that hadn’t been an expansion like Cho was facing if she did this. But she believed in Cho, believed in the service she provided and had seen the success she had had with the business. “There’s always the option of not hiring more people until after you’ve moved the business out of your flat. But all right,” she held up her hand in a peace offering. “You shouldn’t do it until you’re ready and won’t lose too much sleep or risk dehydrating yourself.” She held up her glass as a small cheer to her friend. “Just don’t rule it out completely?”

Cho stuck her tongue out at Melinda, "Alright fine, I won't rule it out entirely. But I also won't rule out a bat bogey hex on Carmen if she keeps it up." She giggled and clinked her glass to Melinda's.

"So, now you've come to your senses and ruled out dating family friends, what next?" Cho always wanted to know what was next when it came to dating - Melinda was the sort of girl any wizard should want and Cho would make sure they all saw it her way eventually.

Melinda grinned and sipped from her drink. “Or maybe you let her talk instead of risking your best employee.”

“Hmm,” Melinda considered Cho’s question as she turned in her seat so she could rest her arm on the bar and for a moment she looked over the other guests in the pub. Yesterday, going out with her cousin’s friend had seemed a very good idea, and that was about as far as she had planned. “Now I… spend a week making delicious and colourful cakes while figuring out what next week’s or month’s specials should be. I have a couple of birthday cakes to prepare, ironically a wedding cake as well, and then I’ll probably be back here on Wednesday for a birthday drink and again on Friday for the same reason, so…” With a small smirk she stirred her drink. She didn’t really have a plan, didn’t really need a plan at this time, at least not when it came to dating.

Cho laughed loudly, "You mean my only employee." She finished her drink and waved to Seamus for another round shouting over the din, "This one's on me," and smiled to Melinda.

"No plan at all, eh? Going to let the fates handle it for you and focus on work? I suppose that could work..." She stuck out her tongue again, knowing all too well that she was doing the same thing, even if she wouldn't admit it.

"Though! Speaking of birthdays... What are we doing? And don't tell me you're just 'having a birthday drink' and that's that." Seamus brought their drinks over and Cho batted her eyelashes at him with a thank you.

“Your best employee,” Melinda agreed with a laugh, looking over her shoulder to signal to Seamus to just put it on the tab that had already been started.

Sticking her tongue right back out at Cho, Melinda scrunched up her nose. “It’s a pretty common way, I know,” she chuckled, “but yes, at least for a bit and then we’ll see. Sounds familiar?”

With a bit of a sigh she leaned back a little. “Actually, that’s more or less what I was going to suggest because I have work on Saturday, but!” She held up a finger to keep Cho from objecting just yet. “Maybe do something bigger on Saturday night. Combined birthday party here or on the rooftop?”

"Oh let's do it in the garden!" Cho was nearly jumping up and down in her seat at the thought of entertaining in the rooftop garden. She likened the place to an oasis in the city. Fairy lights twinkling, beautiful flowers and ferns, and a hodgepodge of furniture they'd collected over time. "We'll order all the food, though, so baking for you." She grinned.

Melinda clapped her hands and nodded eagerly in agreement. “I won’t bake,” she assured Cho, “once the party starts, you won’t be the planner, but one of the birthday girls, yeah?” Like Cho wanted her to take the night off to celebrate, she wanted the very same thing for her friend. “Indian buffet? No, Greek. Or Chinese? Vegetarian? Little bit of everything?”

"Mmmm a little bit of everything sounds great. You'll put in the order tomorrow? And I'll pick up lots of the best mixings for a punch that'll have people dancing all night." She winked.

"I promise, I'll be the little princess I am and I won't lift a finger all night - unless it's to take a shot." She lifted her glass to toast again, feeling like 25 was going to be a very good year.

This time when Melinda picked up her glass, she clinked it to Cho’s. “That sounds like a plan,” she grinned and took a sip. For two Ravenclaws who seemed to thrive on planning, when it came to the two of them it took next to nothing to have an entire party planned out in a matter of minutes. “Happy birthday, to us.”
