Seamus and Open

Seamus returned from the back room with another crate of butterbeer. Despite the crowd being decidedly of legal drinking age, it seemed to be the beverage of choice that particular evening. Perhaps it had something to do with the unseasonable chill in the air. It was still August and the sky had been blue but Seamus had still felt under-dressed in his faded Kenmare t-shirt.

"Right," he said, returning to his position behind the bar. "Who was next?"

Susan was already in a foul mood when she apparated just outside Finnigan's in Monument Alley. She looked down at her outfit - combat boots, tight fitting trousers, t-shirt, and great coat - and shrugged, her desire for a drink overcoming any reservations she had about walking into the pub dressed for the field.

Moving through the crowd she sat at the bar and waited for Seamus to return from out the back. "That would be me," she said, breaking into a smile as he asked for the next order. "I would kill for a firewhiskey."

Seamus glanced up at the familiar voice and grinned right back. "Don't have to kill me," he said hastily, because they both knew she probably could. He poured her a glass and slid it across the bar with a small green napkin. "On the house, but if you want that vat you'll have to pay for it. And transfigure something into a vat. We don't keep them lying around."

He surveyed her - noting no obvious bumps or bruises, which was better than average when it came to Susan. "So what was wrong with work?" he asked.

Susan sighed and contentedly took the proffered drink, studiously ignoring Seamus' comments about death and vats, and stuffing enough coins to cover her drink and then some in the tip jar.

In one fluid motion she drained the glass and leant forward to meet his appraising eyes. "We did a raid on the Brotherhood of the Uncompromising Parallels today," she said, snorting delicately. "They're not particularly good at being dark wizards, but they're very good at being annoying. Takata got stuck in a recursive loop hex, and Witherspoon was turned into gazelle. You wouldn't believe how much paperwork someone turning into a gazelle causes."

"The Brotherhood of the..." Seamus said the words slowly, as if trying to make them sound less ridiculous - but it didn't work. "No, I'm not surprised that no good at being dark wizards with a name like that." He shook his head. "Still glad you're around to keep them at bay, though." If Seamus never had to face another dark wizard in his entire life it would be too soon. He hugely admired and respected those of his classmates who'd decided to go into the job full time - he wouldn't have been able to do it.

He snorted. "Turning someone into a gazelle... isn't exactly dark," he observed. "Did you manage to fix it? I mean, London isn't very gazelle-friendly."

Susan smiled affectionately at Seamus. "The Brotherhood of the Uncompromising Parallels apparently believe that the Universe was meant to be destroyed two years ago, and have been trying to return it to that state ever since. They're a bunch of nutters basically," she said, sliding her glass back towards Seamus with a significant look. "Never fear though darling, I'm always here to keep them at bay for you."

With a grimace, she leant back slightly. "We un-transfigured Witherspoon easily, once we got to her," she replied with a wince. "But before we got to her, she panicked and bolted outside. Into traffic and Muggle onlookers. In Pimlico."

Seamus raised his sandy eyebrows. "Just two?" He couldn't remember anything world-ending that had been impending two years ago... In fact, it had been around the time Monument Alley had been established and Seamus had set up the pub. "What did I do to push them off so bad?" he asked, grinning.

As Susan furnished more details, Seamus winced. "Obliviators all over the place?" he asked in sympathy. Inter-departmental communication at the Ministry sounded like a nightmare from everything Seamus had heard.

"Indeed, exactly two years ago! But not," she added with a would-be-reproving look at her friend, "because Finnigan's opened. Apparently they deeply believed that all the various genocidal idiots in Wizarding history would coalesce in the ether into a single, super-concentrated spirit of intense malevolence and attach itself to a chinchilla in the West Country known as Mister Bubbles, who would then destroy the world. Apparently they were very put out when this, surprisingly didn't happen."

Susan groaned and put her head down on the bar. "It was a nightmare," she said, shuddering slightly. "An alpaca isn't particularly alarming, but we still needed a couple of Oblivators to convince everyone that one of the old biddies in the building we were in kept an illegal zoo. I've been putting out fires from level three all morning from self-important imbeciles who want me to personally explain why Oblivators were needed for a standard operation in the first place."

"Anyway," she said sitting up and smiling at him. "How are you, love? Anything interesting to report?"

Adrian has finished up his work with the roots late in the afternoon and gotten down to the pub to see the last of the Gobstones going on. He sidled up a table for two, hoping that meant the seat would still be available when Alicia joined him, but he was pretty sure the bar would be busier than usual for a Monday thanks to Seamus' promise of a free drink to all Journal holders.

Setting his on the table, he shook off his sports coat, leaving him in a blue t-shirt and jeans. Leaving his things at the table for a moment he went to the bar and ordered a bourbon from Seamus with an arrogant smile. He'd put anything else on a tab, of course, and always tipped quite generously, so hopefully the bar owner wouldn't hold it against him.

Opening his journal he started going through his private notes from the day's work and waiting for his friend, happy to be ignored by the rest of the crowd.

Ernie and OPEN

Tonight had been torture. Ernie's mum had insisted he come by for dinner after work, and of course he couldn't say no to her. Unfortunately, the dinner had been a mix of enthusiastic conversation and astute ignorance as his father did his best to pretend he wasn't there. Ernie could see the heartbreak in his mother's eyes but there wasn't anything he could do about it - this was his father's mess to clean up, if only he cared to.

After all that, Ernie had earned the free drink Seamus had promised, though the moment the pina colada was in his hands, he just happened to place a tip in the jar that was the same amount as what the drink would have been. He was a healer, he made enough money to pay for his drink, and serving so many free drinks couldn't be good for Seamus' account books.

He took a seat at the bar and grinned at the room, feeling more at home here than he did at his parents' place.

Work at the Magical Menagerie had been difficult, coming in to find that a new litter of the intelligent, sleek black rats had died during the night. Theo had been more quiet than usual for the rest of the day and no one really pressed him on it. He definitely self-flagellated over the situation; the rats were his responsibility and he should have set up a monitoring spell, or taking them home, or something, anything that would have stopped the tiny lives just flickering out. He left work tired and angry and morose and he hadn't wanted to go anywhere but home, but it was Monday and he'd promised his therapist that he'd go and be social at least four times this week. He didn't particularly want to go on Saturday, not when he'd be going on Sunday, and he had no desire to go in on Friday either after a long work week.

That left Monday through Thursday because Battlescars apparently didn't count; a wave of weariness washed over him. He'd argued with his therapist that no one went out and did things four nights of the week, but the therapist was unmoved by his argument and told him he was making up for lost time. He was just planning on getting one quick drink in and leaving, fulfilling the requirements set by his therapist to stay for at least 30 minutes and be around people without actually having to talk to anyone - it wasn't cheating, just kind of massaging his therapist's intentions a little bit. He trudged to Finnigan's on foot, the familiarity of the place at least easing some of his irritating but nevertheless present anxieties. He'd cleaned up with a spell after work and, dressed in a soft dark robe, some kind of Wizarding jeans and a sinfully soft black hooded tshirt, entered into the Common Room and - head down - made his way to the bar, taking a free seat and waiting to be served.

Ernie couldn't help but notice the bloke who sat next to him, and he smiled in greeting. He'd seen him before at Finnigan's several times, but he also recognized him from before then. He knew he'd been a patient in Ernie's ward back when he'd been in training, and though they'd never had any healer/patient type of interaction, Ernie felt that confidentiality demanded he refrain from mentioning the recognition.

That didn't mean he couldn't say acrriendly hello, though.

"Rough day?"

Theo couldn't duck his gaze in time to not meet the eyes of the blond guy sitting near him but he returned the smile with an albeit weak one of his own, his fingers playing with the ends of his hair nervously. He was distracted when he was served, asking for a straight firewhisky, but he couldn't help but feel that he'd seen this face before, although it felt like it had been a long time ago or in a dream, out of focus and unrealised.

He was surprised that the guy wanted to make conversation, but he responded partially because manners dictated he should and partially because he heard his therapist jumping up and down and pumping the air with a fist in his head. "Not a good one." he agreed as he took his drink with thanks, paying despite having a journal - he hadn't taken it out to get a drink free with it. "And yourself?"

He nodded in comiseration. "Mine neither. Maybe it's something in the water, like some sort of reverse felix felicis."

He toyed with the small umbrella on his drink - thank Merlin Seamus had them, as it helped keep his fingers busy - and tilted his head at the other bloke.

"So, what was it? Paperwork? A co-worker stole your lunch? A seer came in to tell you she'd seen a grim in your future? Or maybe just family," he finished in a tone that spoke more than words.

Theo frowned to hear that and turned his glass round and round in his fingers, not stopping to sip it. He'd usually move back to a table and try and hide away into a corner somewhere at this point, but he was being sociable and his new friend seemed interested in conversation.

He was actually smiling again as the blond listed some amusing reasons to have a bad day at work, none of which he'd experienced, up until the last thing when the smile fell from his face. He held back a flinch with everything he had and toyed with his hair again, biting at his lip, playing with the rim of the glass, everything showing that he was anxious about something. He didn't say anything about it because he'd picked up the tone and he could tell that this was probably why his drinking pal was here. "I'm sorry... are you having trouble with them?" he asked, unsure if he should but too flustered to do anything normal like actually answer the question he'd been posed.

Ernie smiled as his new friend did, but then noticed the heightened anxiety after mentioning family. I guess I'm not the only one, then. He didn't want to douse the mood so he did his best to shrug it off.

"Yeah, but most people have issues with their family, right? My Da's just being a judgemental arse. He'll get over it eventually." He hoped.

If anyone could lighten a mood, it was Ernie. He looked at his glass consideringly before plucking up the little umbrella, twirling it between his fingers a moment before oh so seriously placing it over his right ear. He then turned to his companion with a clever grin. "There. How does that look?"

Of course it would be Ernie's dad - was there no man alive who didn't cause grief to his son? Of course, Theo's views on things were a little skewed, still he had to self-conciously grip onto the edge of the bar with his left hand to hide the trembles that had started up there. He cast a quick eye over Ernie like he was looking for hidden wounds, any sign of injury to the other boy, so he was looking as Ernie tucked the novelty umbrella behind his ear.

His concern and worry had a head on collision with the amusement at how Ernie looked, but it said a lot that the amusement won out and he smiled again. "Uhm, very dashing." Theo played along, putting his chin in his left hand, pleased that the shaking had stopped.

Melinda, Cho and OPEN
[info]_melinda_
2014-08-18 07:32 pm UTC (link)
Just as she had promised Cho, once she had finished and shared this week’s special, at half six Melinda stepped through the door of Finnigan’s. She knew she was overdressed for the occasion, but the floral dress she had worn last night, had barely been used and it was technically still her weekend, so what better occasion than making sure it saw enough light of the day (or evening) to justify the purchase. With a wave and a bright smile in Seamus’ direction, she headed to the free seats by the bar that had more or less become the regular seats when she went here with Cho.

Ordering a Gin & Tonic – and letting Seamus know that she had left her journal at home, so if he could just start a tab he’d be an absolute sweetheart – she smoothed her dress and waited for Cho to arrive.

Cho flew through the door three minutes late - she hated to be late - and quickly made her way through the crowd, throwing hellos and waving to familiar faces throughout the place, before catching up to Melinda at their usual spot at the bar. "Darling!" She squealed, clearly pleased with Mel's choice of dress.

A flurry of apologies later, she was sitting and ordering an appletini from Seamus, and turning to Melinda with a deadly serious look on her face.

"So, spill, who needs to be hexed and how severely?" Her drink was quickly placed in front of her and without breaking her gaze she lifted it and took a sip, waiting for Mel to start talking.

“Gorgeous!” Melinda grinned right back, because really? Cho could wear a bin liner and still look amazing… and she wasn’t wearing one tonight. Waving her hand, she tried to get her friend to stop apologizing and just sit down and take breath. After all, it was only a couple of minutes and it could hardly be considered being late. Still, the apologies didn’t end until Cho had finally sat down and ordered her drink.

Mirroring Cho, Melinda took a sip from her own drink. “No need for hexing,” she assured her, setting her drink back down. “He’s not a bad guy or even bad looking, and it actually was a pretty good first date if you don’t look past the main course. The entre was delicious, I tell you, just like the fish, though I thought I’d choked on a fishbone when he- when he-.” Melinda paused, her lips pursed as she was still trying to figure out what really had happened last night. “He just- Who in their right mind talks marriage on a first date with someone they’ve only met once, and then follows it up with the reason for it making sense is that we could save a bundle if I made the wedding cake myself?!”

Cho waved off Melinda's compliments, her black jumpsuit was hardly glamorous and she'd been running from client appointment to client appointment all day so was sure she looked a fright. Melinda looked like a lovely fresh flower next to her and Cho loved it.

Cho nearly spit out her green cocktail when Melinda reached the end of her story - or, if you asked Cho, the punchline. "Great Godric, he didn't! How in Merlin's name did you end up on a date with such a crack pot?"

With sound that was part groan and part chuckle Melinda rubbed her forehead as she shook her head. Now that she had said it aloud it seemed silly, foolish even, though no less of a turn-off than it had been yesterday. It did, however, didn’t seem quite as horrifying as it had when it had caused her to get up and leave the restaurant in the middle of dinner.

“He’s a friend of my cousin, and he was really sweet when I met him at his birthday party last weekend, so why shouldn’t I say yes when he asked me out?” With a shrug she chuckled again, this time much more relaxed. “Please tell me your weekend’s been better.”

Cho shook her head and half-sympathetically, half-sarcastically pat Melinda's shoulder. "There, there, now you know better. Family friends are usually a bad idea, in general, just trust me."

Shrugging and reaching for her cocktail again - having waited for the rest of the story after the big reveal - and taking a drink before answering. "I worked. Had a magic/muggle wedding in Cambridge Saturday afternoon and spent yesterday with Amanda and Carmen doing the fall schedule. We had to turn down events this time around, believe it or not, Carmen keeps telling me I should hire more, but with Amanda's time free and Carmen and I full time we make plenty to stay afloat, you know?" The possible expansion of the business had been on Cho's mind for a while but she just didn't know if she was ready.

“I know,” Melinda said with an amused roll of her eyes. “I believe you, I trust you.” It really was amazing how just telling Cho what had happened had taken the edge off and brought her right back down where she could think clearly again and see that she should have seen the warning signs a week ago.

Crossing her legs, she sipped from her drink, listening to Cho. “Wow.” Melinda’s eyes opened wide. “Not that I’m doubting your decision, but I think Carmen may be on to something.” To her it didn’t sound like a bad idea at all. An employee or two more meant that Cho could handle more events which in turn would mean that the business would do more than just ‘stay afloat’, and from there it was a short step to being able to rent a place and get the business out of Cho’s flat, which would make it easier for Cho to gear down when she was home. “You know, there are still office spaces available here. You won’t find a place with lower rent to get started.”

It seemed that everyone else in the office could have done without Monday. On the contrary Blaise enjoyed it. Why? Monday's he had an excuse to leave early as he was in charged of overseeing the Gobstones Club that met at Finnigan's. Of course that meant he was still on the clock when he first arrived but as soon as the club meeting was over he could kick back and relax.

As soon as the club finished Blaise took his robe off, stuffed it in his bag and headed up to the Common Room. There he ordered himself a fire whiskey before taking up residence in a spot where he could easily watch the room.
