Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: gregory goyle, character: marietta edgecombe

Who: Marietta and OPEN
What: Browsing Shops
Where: Diagon Alley, outside of WWW
When: Sunday afternoon
Rating: TBD based on who arrives

Marietta spent the morning taking an extra shift at Flourish and Blotts. She'd had another Saturday night off and had decided to take the extra time so that the girl who usually worked the weekend could have the opportunity to spend some time with her new husband. It wasn't too much of a sacrifice considering that she'd actually spend the bulk of her time lately hiding away from everyone. In fact she'd gotten so good at it she wasn't sure what was going on in the lives of her friends these days. She hadn't meant to ignore them, it had just happened. She assumed they were all busy with things that were definitely more important than making sure she wasn't turning into a recluse.

Of course so much time to herself along with the amount of time she spent pretending to be someone else wasn't healthy at all. Therefore, Marietta decided to take the time to walk Diagon Alley and do a little window shopping, something she hadn't done in quite awhile. She didn't know for sure what she was looking for or even if she'd find anything worth purchasing. Still, Marietta gave herself a budget of twenty galleons for the day.

For now she stood outside of Weasly's Wizard Wheezes and watched their latest window display do whatever it was it purported to do.

Greg frowned, his mind slowly processing this new comment. "You're not a Weasley?" He was never quick to change his mind once it had been made - but maybe she was a more distant relation, one who was as disapproving of the Weasley's current behaviour as the rest of the purebloods were. "Good," he said decisively, when he'd finally made up his mind. "I didn't even want to see any today but I had to come here to get something." He was still suspicious enough not to want to say 'my journal'. Even if he didn't really use it the way that word implied, he still didn't go around just telling strangers about his life. Much. "And then George made me work!" he added, frown deepening as he glanced back at the shop. "He should pay me. But he won't." Unless maybe Greg could get Pansy to make George pay. That was an idea worth considering.

"Who are you, then?" he asked, looking the woman up and down. She didn't look familiar to him, but Greg quite easily forgot faces of people he didn't consider important. "I'm Goyle."

Marietta cringed on the inside. It was amazing to her how many people thought that any witch or wizard with ginger qualities had to be a part of the Weasley clan. "I am definitely not a Weasley," she asserted. While she was almost certain most people these days didn't mean the statement as an insult, she still recalled how her mother had made a point of disassociating herself from the Weasley's. In fact, it had been her mentioning of them to her mother and the assurance that the Ministry was watching the family that had made her question the DA.

"Marietta Edgecombe," she stated her name. "Goyle," she repeated. "You were in Slytherin." It was the only thing she recalled about him and it was not meant to be an insult, just a point of fact.

Having already declared it good that she wasn't a Weasley, Greg just nodded. Someone behind him shoved at him, trying to get closer to the shop window, or to see the sign, but Greg was immovable save for the fact he turned his head to glare at the frizzy-haired witch who instantly thought better of her course and side-stepped around him. "Edgecombe," he repeated - family name always being more important in the circles he'd been brought up in. It wasn't a name that meant much to him. Not one of the 'proper' purebloods, definitely, but maybe a lesser kind. He shrugged, deciding it was unimportant. That was what he was supposed to be doing, right? Not talking about blood purity anymore, unless it was a case of marriage or children.

"Yeah," he said. He would never identify himself as having been in 'Potter's year' the way some people did. It might be the most obvious reference, but Potter already thought entirely too much of himself. His eyes narrowed slightly. "What about you?" If she was another goody Gryffindor he was going to walk away and get back to his weekend, whether it was rude or not.

Marietta couldn't believe how rude some people were. It wasn't as if there wasn't space enough to have walked around the two of them. Thankfully, Goyle was sturdy enough that he wasn't easily jostled so she didn't have to deal with the awkwardness of his being inadvertently steered closer to her.

Inwardly she smiled at how easily and correctly she identified him once he stated his name. "Ravenclaw," she responded. "I know that we're not supposed to define ourselves by our houses these days but I have found that those true friends I made in school are the ones that tend to be the same people I find myself associating with these days." She wasn't trying to offend, simply making a statement of fact that was more of an observation of herself. "Does the same hold for you? I'm sure there were plenty of decent friendships created within your house as well."

On a personal level, Ravenclaws tended not to be Greg's favourite people. While it was true that people being smarter than him wasn't necessarily a barrier to closeness - all his friends were, after all - the Ravenclaws Greg remembered from school had either been oh-so-keen to display how smart they were or else had no patience with Greg's slower thought processes. Or both. Still, they were better than Gryffindors and after a few moments of thought, Greg was able to answer her question. "Yeah, I'm still friends with people from school."

After a little while longer, he added, "We were friends before Hogwarts, too." Friends he hadn't grown up with were a rarity in Greg's life - what did he need more friends for, after all? He glanced over his shoulder at the shop, a little concerned George might appear and demand more work of him, since he was still here. "I should go." He didn't mean to be abrupt, or rude. In fact, if he been less concerned about manners, he'd just have walked away without warning.

Goyle's statement that he'd been friends with his classmates before school wasn't lost on Marietta. She knew that many Slytherins held tight to their connections. It was something she knew was unlikely to disappear with the end of the war but like most had hoped that eventually such things could and would be forgotten.

"Enjoy the rest of your day," she gave a nod and turned her attention back to the display so as to allow him to exit as he had stated he ought.
