Who: Melinda and OPEN
What: Sweet Nothings’ pre-open pre-taste party
Where: The rooftop above Sweet Nothings
When: Saturday January 31, 2005 - Evening
Rating: SFW, will update if/as needed

Being back in Sweet Nothings’ kitchen this week had felt like coming home. Mark, the baker she had hired to make up for the workload her mother would no longer be doing, had fit right in. Sure, he wasn’t much of a decorator, but he could bake and even better; he could adapt and spar verbally when it came to recipes and procedures. Between the two of them, getting everything ready for tonight’s party had gone smoother than she had planned for.

So now, the buffet tables were laden with cakes, pastries and dessert. Layer cakes had become the perfect backdrop for the cupcakes, rather than forego the breakfast pastries as she had first planned, she had now piled them onto trays at angles that lead the eyes to the tarts and cakes. Finally, on the table by the wall, with the London lights as a backdrop, they had set up the table with what would be this year’s Valentine’s menu. Strawberry & Champagne and Chocolate Heaven Cupcakes with champagne truffles, surrounded the Raspberry Kisses and the Red Velvet Heart Layer Cake, and though she still hadn’t decided whether to go with them or not, Melinda had also filled a couple of stands with chocolate covered strawberries and cheese cake stuffed raspberries. Even if they didn’t make it onto the Valentine’s Day menu, they still went perfectly with the champagne served from the make-shift bar right by the door.

With the wards in place, the rooftop was nice and warm, the music at a volume where you could talk – except on the area assigned as the dancefloor – and the fairy lights made it all seem, well, magical.

Melinda smoothed down her dress as she moved along from the latest to congratulate her on a job well done. She loved what she had done, she loved that people had shown up, and she really wanted to meet and talk to all of them, though right now she would really, really like something to drink. After all, it was half an hour since she had set her course towards the bar. At least now, it was within sight.

Weaving past a couple of guests, she once again stopped and smiled at the next in line, genuinely pleased that they were there.

Bryn pushed his glasses up, smiling. "Hiya. Looks like you don't have a drink," he noted, glancing at her hands. "Champagne?" Bryn offered her the glass he had just poured for himself - it was always a good idea to get the boss a drink first, in his opinion.

"Looks like you're trying to feed a small army tonight," he said with a grin. Tonight he'd dressed for the occasion in a shirt he didn't wear often but seemed good for a party. "I don't even know where to start."

“Oh, Bryn Cadwallader, you are a lifesaver,” Melinda gushed as she accepted the glass from him, hoping that he would help himself to another to replace the one he had just given her.

Taking a sip from the champagne – which still tasted as good as she remembered it – she looked to the tables and shrugged slightly. “A small army or Monument Alley,” she chuckled and looked back to Bryn. “The new baker had to learn the recipes, and with it being a party to present the new cakes, well, one of each was the least we could make. Cho, then, had the idea that using the cakes as decoration would work, and… it did.” Pointing over to the Valentine’s Table. “Now, I’m not saying that that’s where you should start, but the cheese cake stuffed raspberries is a personal favourite.” Making a small gesture with the glass towards him, she continued; “Love your shirt, by the way.”

He plucked another glass from the bar and began to fill it. Champagne, admittedly, wasn't his usual drink, but parties like this called for it, Bryn thought. He was quite proud of Melinda for all the work she'd done over the last month in making Sweet Nothings truly her own.

"I should've spotted that was Cho's handiwork. You're both too talented for your own good." Bryn sipped his drink. "I'll have to give them a try." Food stuffed into other food was usually worth experiencing. "Thanks." He tried to straighten his posture a little, though it seemed that a couple of wrinkles had already started to form.

"So are you looking forward to reopening?"

“We really are,” Melinda sighed, before she grinned and winked at Bryn to show that she was teasing. That she and Cho were both running successful businesses, she figured, came down to both of them being fortunate enough to do and specialise in something they loved. Melinda knew that she worked a lot, but most of the time it didn’t feel like work, and maybe that had something to do with it, too. On top of that, she’d been fortunate to have her mother help her get Sweet Nothings up and running, and now she was working with people she genuinely cared about and trusted, like Bryn.

“Oh, I can’t wait to open again,” she smiled dreamily. “This past week, being back in the kitchen was like coming home, but I still missed the customers and you guys. “How about you? You ready to get back behind the counter?”

"Yeah," Bryn said nodding. He'd missed Sweet Nothings over the past month; it had a totally different vibe than Finnigan's and he liked to switch things up. "Don't tell Seamus, but the bakery smells a lot nicer," he joked. Going home smelling of vanilla and chocolate was preferable to the scent of beer.

He cast an approving glance at the Valentine's table. "Looks like I need to familiarise myself with all the new lush cakes."

Almost instantly, Melinda’s smile brightened; it was good to hear that Bryn was ready to start up on his hours at Sweet Nothings again. She liked working with him too, his relaxed approach to things a nice influence on her own near-constant efficiency. Melinda made a small twist of her fingers near the corner of her mouth. “Your secret’s safe with me,” she assured him with a chuckle and looked in the direction he was glancing.

“Eventually, yeah, I think you might need to do that,” she said and gestured for him to follow along; he might as well try out the treats she had just recommended while they were talking. “But there’ll be signs by the cakes so you know their names and what’s in them, and…” she paused as she thought of the best way to put it the most politely; “the customers won’t know the names either, and these?” She gestured to the Valentine’s table. “Well, they’ll only be there for the week up until Valentine’s Day…”

For a moment she fell quiet as she looked over all the red and the pink and the sweet and the chocolate. It looked great, and she knew that it would be admitting defeat if she had Sweet Nothings follow her own current attitude towards Valentine’s Day and just not acknowledge it, but there was still something missing. She just needed to find the right recipe for the anti-Valentine’s Day that some people were bound to call for as well. Something with grapefruit, to really emphasise the whole bitter-sweet thing. Then again, maybe she shouldn’t ignore it completely. “I should make extra,” she mused, not just to herself, but to Bryn as well. “And have a Clean Out Valentine’s get-together after closing time that evening.” She looked up at Bryn. “Roger’s probably got some sort of fluffy date with M-someone, but the rest of us?” As far as she knew, none of the people in the group of friends were involved with anyone, though she couldn’t really figure out what was going on with Cho and that tall Beater with the ex-wife.

Bryn picked up one of the cheesecake stuffed raspberries, inspecting it for a moment before popping it in his mouth, the perfect bite-sized morsel. He washed it down with a sip of champagne. "Yeah? Could do. I know I don't have anything better to do." It was hard to picture any dates suddenly appearing in the next couple of weeks. His life didn't ever really work like that, to be honest.

"Tell you what," he said, casting an eye over the Valentine's selection with the bartender part of his brain engaged, "I'll see if I can figure out the right dessert wine to go with this lot. Maybe a couple of cocktails?"

She couldn’t help it, but she watched Bryn carefully to see how he liked the raspberries. After all, she had to know, because this was a potential special menu item, right? “I think there are quite a few who don’t,” Melinda chuckled. “It’s a Saturday, so perfect timing. Spread the word and I’ll do the same?”

Looking first to the treats and then back to Bryn, Melinda considered his suggestion. “Cocktails,” she agreed with a smirk and leaned in a little to keep it between the two of them. “I prefer mine on the bitter side.”

"Will do. Ben and Chris are first on the list." Funny, but now they lived together they didn't necessarily go out together quite as much. Assuming that neither of them had any other plans, this could be fun. Ben probably wouldn't mind helping to put together some music for the night, either, providing he didn't have a date.

A small, amused smirk tugged at his lips as he picked up another raspberry. "Yeah? Something bitter it is. And maybe something sour too?" Something to really drive home the sentiment.

“I’ll start with Cho, Mari, and Roger,” Melinda supplied with a nod, though she really hadn’t a clue if either of them could make it. Cho and Roger might have dates and Mari? Well, Mari had never been big on things like that, and she seemed to have work at the most inopportune times, but Melinda still hoped that she would be there.

“Eh!” Melinda laughed. “I’m not bitter, I just like my drinks that way, and I like, you know, balance.” It was a basic principle of tasting; salt to counter the sour and bitter to counter the sweet. “There’s already 6 proposals booked in the shop that day, 2 of which includes the full wedding cake tasting, and the first orders for rings baked into cakes started trickling in around Christmas, every single one of them with the note that he wanted to do something special for his girlfriend…” Tilting her glass, she hinted a small toast at Bryn and took a sip. “Which reminds me; are you free to work on the fourteenth?”

Bryn flashed a grin. "Of course you're not bitter." Then again, Melinda had been dating Oliver Wood, something which had been all over the press, and then suddenly she wasn't. Bryn didn't know all the details, and while he did love a bit of gossip, he wasn't about to pry. But if Valentine's Day was a little bittersweet for her, so to speak, Bryn could understand. "You know, I'm kind of envisioning a lot of tequila."

Mulling over the logistics of it all, Bryn grimaced slightly. "Possibly? I'll need to see if I've got any hours at the pub. So I can't make any promises yet."

No, Melinda wasn’t bitter. Well, except when Cormac was asking advice on how to deal with having declared his love to Lavender and then asking Melinda to supply the best possible Valentine’s Day basket possible. Even Melinda couldn’t deny the bitterness that that provoked, but Cormac was Cormac and she had long ago accepted that he simply lacked the ability to… no, strike that. Cormac was a git, though fortunately he was mostly an alright git. He just sometimes got on her nerves.

“Tequila?” Melinda chuckled, her small smirk slowly spreading into an approving smile as she nodded. “Versatile, unromantic, I think you’re right on that one. And some Bourbon, if Chris shows up. Has he always been like that?”

She picked out one of the raspberries for herself while Bryn considered whether he could work or not. “It’s no rush,” she assured him. “If you have the time and are interested in the extra hours, just come in, yeah?”

"Unromantic! Yes, that's exactly it. We need unromantic drinks." Bryn took another raspberry because, well, why not? He chuckled, pausing only to eat the sweet treat. "Yeah, Chris has always been... like Chris." He shrugged.

Bryn nodded. "Yeah, okay. But I'll try and let you know sooner rather than later. Sounds like you'll need the extra pair of hands." With so many people trying to propose in the shop, they would need to keep things running smoothly to avoid overlaps which might make the special moment that little bit less special. Plus, there would be all the regular customers, not to mention extra foot traffic who wanted to pick up a nice dessert.

Genie had dithered over what to wear, not really sure what Melinda’s party called for, but finally settled on something she thought would work. It was made all the harder by the fact the wolf was so very close to the surface – she nulled a couple of things simply because the wolf fidgeted too much at the sensation of them on her skin.

She’d even added some fake boot cuffs stitched by Brighid that matched the sweater, and Talia had helpfully painted her nails. She’d offered to take the younger were, but Talia apparently had a date later, so Genie ended up going alone. Alexander had wanted to go, but he was still so self-conscious about his appearance in the magical world that he backed out, though he did offer to drive her on over.

She took him up on it, making sure to grab the wand before she left, as she wasn’t sure who might be about to open it for her in the evening. She was looking forward to this thing, if only for the company – she’d really taken to Melinda the other day – and the sugar. Alcohol didn’t do much for her beyond the taste, especially this close to the moon, but there was the alluring promise of chocolate things to consider.

The scent to hit her nose when she arrived was kind of intoxicating in its own way, and a slow grin overtook her face. Some very yummy stuff here, she could tell. She took a glass of champagne, more for the bubble sensation than anything, and went on in, eyes scanning the crowd as she edged toward some of the delightful chocolate things in residence.

Getting to know Cormac's friends more was something Lavender wanted to work on, especially as it seemed like whenever they were busy any time they did have together was often spent in private. Mac always spoke really well of Melinda and as Lavender liked popping into Sweet Nothings for a treat on occasion, accepting the invitation to the pre-re-opening party made so much sense.

While Mac had gone to fetch more drinks, Lavender had drifted towards one of the displays of cakes. Releasing a longing sigh, she didn't know where to begin. They all looked so good.

Someone approached the table beside her and even under the heady combinations of chocolate and vanilla that hung in the air, Lavender could tell that it was a woman. She turned and gave a smile. "This may be the most delicious-looking table I have ever seen in my life."

Genie couldn't help but take another long, deep breath. Moon above, it smelled so divine that she had to keep a whine of longing from her throat. "I think you might just be right," Genie said, taking yet another deep breath, trying to figure out by smell alone what one she wanted to try first. With her metabolism, she could indulge however she wanted. However, the scent that came with it had her blinking slightly and looking immediately over at the woman she'd just responded to.

There was something... yes, very familiar in the scent, even if the scent itself wasn't familiar. She looked over the woman a little frankly, but that was in character with her. Her gold-flecked eyes were warm.

"I'm not sure what I want to eat all up first," she said with a smile, finally glancing away.

Lavender wasn't a stranger to being stared at, not with scars on her throat that were rarely hidden. Besides, she was a self-confessed people-watcher herself, not to mention trained to make quick appraisals.

A familiarity nagged at her, but since she couldn't pin it down immediately, Lavender reached for one of the black forest cupcakes. "I think I'm going to go for this one." The chocolate heaven ones looked insanely good too, but dark chocolate usually won out when Lavender needed to make a choice. Besides, she could always convince herself that the cherry in it was sort of vaguely good for her.

"So, I'm Lavender. And I feel like I should know your name, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank, sorry." Lavender just hoped she hadn't ever arrested her. That would be embarrassing.

Genie noted the scars as she looked back up, but her gaze slid over them almost as a matter of course. She was so used to them in her household that it actually took them a moment to register. It was then she identified the extra element to the very nice scent of the other woman -- she reminded her keenly of Alexander. She wished in that moment she'd dragged him along, so he could see someone else who didn't seem ashamed of her scars.

Her gaze went back to the decadence. She practically purred as she chose her own. "Red velvetttttt," she said. Her tongue darted out to taste the frosting and she sighed happily.

"I'm Genie," she said, dragging her gold-glinted eyes back open from where she'd been enjoying the frosting. She remembered Lavender now -- Gryffindor. "We were in the same House, I think, though I was several years under you."

"Red velvet? Ooh, I didn't spot those." They could be number three on her list of things to try, Lavender decided, because after this black forest cupcake she was definitely going for the chocolate heaven. And after three cupcakes she would likely need something savoury or be on too much of a nice buzz from all the sugar to really put too much thought into whatever she was going to eat next. She would definitely need to go for a run tomorrow: hopefully Cormac would be able to motivate her in the morning.

"Gryffindor? Yes, that must be it." She sighed. "A lifetime ago, it feels like." She'd tried to protect younger students when she'd been in seventh year, but some of them stuck out in her mind more than others; Lavender felt bad that she didn't have a better recall of Genie other than maybe a bit of pouty, half-joking complaining to Parvati that there were so many younger girls who were taller than her.

"How's the cake?"

"Mmmm, my cupcake, mine," she said, playfully shielding it from the other woman with a hand and grinning at her. She winked. Genie mused that she'd never gone for chocolate nearly so much before she'd become a werewolf, and wished there was some kind of survey or something to see if there was a correlation.

"God, tell me about it," Genie said. "It was a lifetime ago for me. I've been out on the fringes of the magical world since the spring before the end of the war. It's like I've lived a whole different life since the last time I was in the Common Room with my mates." She still wished she could have finished her education.

"The cake is brilliant and I think I wish I could keep Melinda in my kitchen forever, because these are just so good."

"Looks like you're slightly less on the fringes today," Lavender commented gently, trying to work out a rough timeline. Even if she didn't know Genie's age, that meant she had dropped out of school early. That had to be tough.

Lavender swallowed a bite of cake. "Oh, god. If I could hire my own personal chef, they would have to be as good as Melinda. Otherwise, what's the point? Cake is so important," she added with a grin.

"I'm trying a bit," Genie admitted. "It helps, being around a magical community again. The country and all, there's not any great concentration of witches and wizards in any one place." Which was sad in some ways, but convenient in others.

"I know! Dessert is possibly the most important part of every meal." She eyed Lavender's cake contemplatively. "Yours is good, then?"

Lavender nodded in understanding. Despite now living in London, she'd grown up in the countryside and both had their own sort of freedom when it came to magic use.

"Oh, yes." She wiped a crumb from the corner of her mouth. "Highly recommended." At the edge of her vision, she spotted Cormac looking around, presumably for her. Lavender picked up one of the red velvet cupcakes, smiling. "I think my boyfriend might be searching for me, so I'm going to take him this. It was nice seeing you. Again."

Viktor had plans for a blissfully child-free evening, though he felt guilty at the thought. He adored his children; it was just lately he felt very alone and relegated to the household, and he needed a little adult time sometimes. Especially with his mother away a lot of the time, and his work with his teammates being more on a professional level, he found himself isolated a bit.

But tonight he was taking full advantage of not having anyone else with him. He’d very much enjoyed talking to Melinda the other day, and she’d been so helpful. Plus he really did have a secret weakness for sweets, so there was that as well. If anything he’d at least get out of the house.

He looked around appreciatively at the decorations when he arrived, enjoying the magical ambience. The set up really was quite nice, and his sense of aesthetics found itself quite satisfied. He simply walked around quietly, enjoying it and the very nice champagne for a few minutes, nodding to a few people as he went.

Marietta wasn't keen on public affairs that included most of her own peer group. In fact if it weren't for Melinda and Cho she'd likely spend every non-working moment locked away in her home. However, she loved her friends and wanted to make sure that she supported them in each of their endeavors. Hence the primary reason she had showed tonight.

"Melinda really out did herself tonight," she observed as she looked up and found Viktor Krum passing by. She didn't really know the man other than by his celebrity status. Not that she paid much attention to those sorts of things.

"She certainly did," Viktor agreed easily, turning toward the woman who had spoken. For the briefest moment, he thought it could be Hermione, though not from the voice -- the hair from the corner of his eye spurred the thought. He smiled politely at the woman. "I did not know vhat I should expect, but this exceeds anything I could have come up with."

Marietta smiled as she heard the accent. It was one thing to listen to the voice on the wireless in interviews or as you passed by someone else, but to hear the voice directed toward her own ears was unexpectedly pleasant. "Over the years I've come to realize that Melinda is more talented than I think she gives herself credit for."

Pausing she took a sip from the glass she'd been nursing. "We've known each other since our first day at Hogwarts."

"She seems like a very talented lady," Viktor said. "I haff only recently made her acquaintance aside from visiting the shop, but she seems very skilled and good at vhat she does." And kind, which was an all-important trait to Viktor, especially when it came to people being good to his children.

"Ahh, those sorts of friendships are priceless," he said, inclining his head toward her. "They are the ones you can alvays go back to, no matter vhat is going on in your life." He didn't have many of those. Being chosen so young for Quidditch playing had torn apart some of his friendships with jealousy, and others with sheer busyness over time.

Marietta nodded as Viktor complimented Melinda's work. It was her belief that attention to detail made most Ravenclaws better at their work than others. Even when they were working places they didn't necessarily prefer they tended to excel. It was in their nature or so she liked to think. Thankfully, Melinda not only had a job it was something she absolutely loved to do and could tell others about. The same for Cho. Marietta on the other hand wasn't quite so lucky.

"Yes, Melinda is a good friend even when I'm not the best," Marietta had no qualms admitting that she often failed in the social aspect of things. She could easily go for weeks at a time without so much as a word to anyone. The journals from Finnigan's had done a little to fix that provided she actually picked it up and looked. "She and Cho tend to keep me from holing up in my house and hunkering down with my puzzle books."

"I think that is the definition of any good friendship -- being there vhen the other is having a hard time, or is not at their best," he mused aloud. Fin was a good friend like that, and he hoped he was in return. "They come after you vhen you are floundering." He spoke from experience there. He had very few people he could call really close friends, though his old Vrasta teammates still counted. They still checked in with him often, and he was grateful and tried to return the favor.

"Ah yes, holing up too much is not good for you, though I know the temptation." He gave a slightly rueful smile. "I am told by the press I am much too reclusive," he told her in a confiding tone. "And it really is good to get out sometimes, as nice as staying in is."

Marietta gave a simple nod and looked across the room to where Melinda stood and gave a simple nod. It was amazing how different they were when it came to socialization. She still didn't know what she'd done good in her life to deserve friends that stood by her no matter how horrible she was, and yes she'd done things that were considered horrible by many. In fact she still did things that she was certain many would find rather repulsive.

"Being reclusive has its good points," she conceded. "It leaves a bit of mystery that leaves people guessing. I honestly have very little respect for individuals who flaunt themselves before the media."

"It vorks for some people, I think. I haff friends who do not mind it. Myself, I find them far too intrusive most days for my tastes." Though occasionally they could be useful, if he was trying to promote a certain cause. But that was about it. He especially hated it when they focused on his children with little regard for their welfare.

"It is not so much the mystery that I aim for, simply the illusion of some kind of privacy."

In her secondary line of work privacy was key. Honestly, with the public events she'd gone to with clients she was shockingly surprised that she had never been the focus of any written piece of work.

"Privacy is definitely important," she agreed.

He cast his gaze around the room and sipped at his drink. "So if you were to recommend one of the thigns here, vhat would it be?" he asked her curiously, figuring that since she was close with Melinda, she would know what to recommend.

When the conversation turned to the fare of the evening she knew they were just about done with the small talk. "I'd venture that anything here that is to your taste would be worth recommending." She'd yet to have anything from Melinda that didn't sit well on her palate. "My favorites though tend to be anything with strawberry in it."

Not usually one to attend social events unless he were dragged by friends or pushed out the door by his mother, Greg had been tempted this time by the promise of sweets. Sweet Nothings had been closed forever, as far as he was concerned, and the bakery in Diagon Alley was an inadequate substitute. He'd arrived just a little late and was hovering by the table of new menu items, wondering how many he was allowed to take. He'd already had two chocolate cupcakes and was eying a third. Out of the corner of his eye, Greg saw someone approach the table and before even turning to see who it was he reached out for the Black Forest cupcake he'd been contemplating, unwilling to take a chance someone else should get it first, even though there were plenty of others.

Cupcake securely in hand, he acknowledge his companion with a grunt and then, eyes narrowing slightly, added, "The pastries are good." This was true - Greg had tried Melinda's pastries on many mornings on his way to work before Christmas - but they weren't as good as the delicious chocolatey treats that Greg wished he could keep all for himself.

Cho nodded in agreement and laughed a little, "They're delicious. Everything Mel cooks is, though I wish she'd make macaroons more often, they're my favorite and she hates baking them." She reached and took one of the Black Forest cakes and with her finger took some of the frosting to taste.

"Are you enjoying the party?" Of course she was curious - she'd put it together after all, even if it was mostly for the fun of it, she didn't want to let Melinda down.

Despite his half-formed plan, the woman reached right for one of the cakes. As he scowled at her, Greg slowly took in the details of her appearance and realised she looked familiar. He couldn't place her immediately, which meant she probably hadn't been in his year at school, but she might have been in Slytherin in one of the other years or else a different house entirely. It would take him a while to remember where he knew her from, or it might not come to him at all if she left now. Greg didn't really care either way - if she'd been important, he'd have recognised her at once. "How can she hate baking?" he asked. "She's a baker, isn't she?" Of course, he didn't love selling the Weasley's products even though he did that for a living, but that was just a job. Being a baker was... different, at least in Greg's mind.

He glanced around the party, shrugging. "It's alright. No one's here, but there's cake." By 'no one' he meant only 'no one he knew' but he didn't see the point in clarifying that.
