Who: Genie and Richard

What: A meeting

Where: Richard's flat

When: Wednesday January 28, afternoon

Rating: SFW for now

Genie checked the largish bag slung over her shoulder one more time as Brighid pulled off the road. "Here we be," the older were told her.

"Thanks loads, Brighid," Genie said, leaning over to kiss her cheek. "I appreciate the ride."

"I'll come back in about two hours, text or call if you need me sooner or later than that, lovie."

Genie nodded. "Will do. Enjoy your shopping." She turned and leaned into the back seat, where Violet was strapped into a babyseat. She wiggled her fingers at the pup, tickling her tummy briefly. The baby was having a good day today, and she giggled and waved her arms. "Love you too, little one," she said, grinning at the sound, and then she slid out of the car, waving at them both before crossing the street, following the directions Richard had given her.

Some days she swore she was just a kid playing in a grown up world, but she was trying to make a go of this magical world thing. She made her way to the door he'd mentioned and knocked.

Rich had been keeping one eye on the outside camera monitor and had the audio turned up a little while he typed on his laptop at his desk in the back of his flat. So he was headed for the door when the young woman knocked. He took the three steps down to the foyer in a single jump and opened the door.

"Hi there," he greeted her with a smile and ushered her in. "Richard Summerby, call me Rich." He led the way back up into the flat and to the left, between the first two front bedrooms, to the area he called his library because of the tall bookshelves against the wall. He gestured to the while leather sofa, taking the matching armchair for himself.

"As you can see, the place is, well, industrial." He waved to the rest of the room and the white-painted iron girders and beams. Could use a little softening touch. But I can't abide what passes for most interior decorating these days, so when I saw your journal post, I thought to have a look at what you had to offer in candles and things. Take a look around if you like, and I'll show you the spa room in a minute, too."

"I'm Genie de la Lune, pleased to meet you, Rich," she said cheerily. She followed him inside, eyes going over the area. Very well off, that her eyes could definitely tell her. She breathed in subtly, drawing information from her other senses as well. Bachelor, she guessed, and a somewhat neutral set of scents.

"Well, I won't pretend to be any kind of interior decorator, not by far, but I like pretty things and I like making them, and being creative. And make things smell good."

She pulled out an old brochure from when they'd lived at the farm and handed it over, and also pulled out a few carefully wrapped samples as well. "I can also attempt anything you'd like, really. Brewing and this sort of thing is what I've been doing on the side for years."

Rich nodded. "Well, not so much interior design as accents. Here's the thing... had a little gathering a while back for a friend, and even with the overheads off and just lamps on, the place really wasn't softened that much. It's a muggle neighborhood, and I run computers and other electronics, so I have to be really conservative with any magic use. So I couldn't just toss up some witch-lights and floating candelabra around. Candles and oil lamps would be fine, though. I think it would be a better atmosphere, and maybe let me do some mood setting with a range of scents, depending on the occasion."

His grin took a bit of a wry twist. "Who knows. February is just around the corner and I might even get lucky and have some bird over and want to do the whole romantic thing."

He gestured to the third front bedroom door. "Shuffled some walls on that room and enlarged the bathroom, put in a party-sized hot tub. Room for eight or ten friends or so. Remembered the shelves for candles, but don't have the candles yet. And you mentioned bath oils and the like? Take a look if you want and I'll glance through your catalog while I wait."

"You just need a more personal touch. These things can help with that. Maybe go to a few craft fairs and get a few things too. My mate, Brighid, she sews in her spare time, what there is of it. I don't use much magic in what I do either, usually. I've been in the Muggle world a long time." She might have grown up in the magical world, in a magical community, but she'd been given a hard dose of fitting into this world during the war and it had stuck in may unintentional ways. "Candles always soften the lighting, and the scents can do a lot more than people give them credit for. Relaxation, scent memory, all of that. The scent of baking or the scent of roses, it does different things."

Genie grinned and chuckled, a throaty sound. "I doubt you'll have any trouble doing that," she told him frankly, as she knew very little other way to be. Rich and charming, she doubted he had trouble with the ladies.

"All righty. You take a look and I'll take a look." She handed over the catalog, going to nose around in the indicated door, shameless in her curiosity though it was sanctioned. She loved seeing how other people lived. Perhaps it was her different living situation, but other people did fascinate her. She poked around there, looking and considering options, things she would like and trying to put a masculine light on it.

"I can do different styles," she called through the open door. "I just haven't had time since moving to stock up my usual variety. I sold off most of what I'd made before, when we moved to London." It was a hobby that made her a fair amount of money, especially close to the holidays.

"I've heard of all that, of course, just really haven't a clue about where to start." He shrugged. "When we remodeled all the flats we had a couple of interior designers to work with. Guess I haven't got much of a personal style yet, other than wanting to keep as much of the historical character of the buildings as we could."

Rich shrugged. "The ladies find out about my work schedule, on the road two to four days a week, they lose interest. Except for the brainless pure blood lumps, and I do my best to avoid them."

He glanced through the brochure while Genie explored, then got up to follow her into the oversized bathroom/spa. "When I had the walls opened up for the remodel, the workmen found the pipes for the old gas lighting and I had them stubbed out." He pointed out the two capped fittings over the huge tiled tub on either side of the high window above it. "I was thinking of a couple of crystal drawing room fixtures, antiques or copies, and candles or oil lamps on the shelves and in the corners on stands. What do you think?"

"Well then you just haven't found the right sort yet then," she said, giving him a quick, warm grin. "Of course, it depends on what you want, I suppose. Everyone's different." Like her. She never could seem to settle, at least not yet; the pack had steadied her but she still had some epic screw ups when it came to relationships.

"I'd go with the original or as close to it as you could get. Good copies. Maybe even real gas lighting, unless the smell would be too much. I've not been around gas lighting like that enough to tell you if it would be." She was so scent sensitive, it was among her first thoughts. "The candles and oil lamps, a combination or one of the other, would give a good atmosphere. And bath oils and such, it'd be quite a decadent set up." Her smile told him there was absolutely nothing wrong with decadent at all in her book.

Richard chuckled and shook his head. "Somebody who could tolerate me in more than small doses would probably be a good place to start. I moved into this big barn because we never could sell it, or even lease it, and it's just me rattling around in here."

"I know when they cleaned out the attic next door there was a collection of old lighting fixtures that had been in storage since the place was wired for electric lighting. Seems to me we put them all in the basement to see if any would clean up. I'll have to have a rummage around and see what all's there. My stove top and ovens are gas, and I haven't noticed any objectionable smells. Grill on the roof next door, too. Doesn't add any odd taste to whatever I'm cooking at any rate. If there are a couple of matched, good looking lights, I'll have them restored and put up. If not, I'll find something somewhere. What's a guesstimate to touch up the main area and do a work of art in here?"

He grinned. "Decadent would be good. Better than good. I admit to the occasional solitary soak after a workout or a race, but a tub this big does call for close friends and a little... decadence."

"Mmm, well that would probably require you to not be gone so long, which is something you already mentioned happens a lot." She grinned, though, softening any sting. "But I'm sure the right person could probably motivate your attendance to them." She winked saucily.

"Those would probably be perfect," Genie said. "So long as they work, and well, you have magic, so I'm sure you can ensure that." The wonders of magic, after all, even if she wasn't as fluent in those as she once imagined she would be. "Though you could always find one at some of the secondhand stores and such." Those were good for a myriad of things. She tapped her finger on her lips, hmming to herself. "Depends on what you want, really. Elegance or home-iness? How big, how many? The loo here, it could be a tad pricey if only because something like this deserves a lot of ambience and it really would loosen things up like I think you're aiming for."

She laughed softly. "Ah, a man after my own tastes. I can totally do decadent."

Rich couldn't help but chuckle when Genie winked at him.

"There's always the depths of the storerooms at work, too. Some days I think the senior partners never threw anything away." He grinned and raised an eyebrow. "Elegance would probably be wasted on this place. After all, it did start life as a furniture-maker's workshop. So attractive and homey would be the way to go. When you say pricey to do the whole place, what were you thinking of? I could see paying half up front if that will make your life easier."

His smile grew wider. "Well if you like to do decadent, you'll just have to help me give the spa a good test splash after you get everything set up."

"Ah, the joys of hoarding things away for another day. Also the joys of having space to do so," she said with a laugh. That was something she often wished for, but she didn't have the luxury so instead of keeping the scraps of things she wanted, she either gave them away or threw them away.

Genie's head tilted and if they could have, her ears would have swiveled contemplatively as she regarded the place and him. She named a number, and it wasn't exorbitant, but it wasn't cheap either. "To stock up the loo there with all the oils and such you could ever want, it'll be more, but I haven't got much back stock in all that here yet, so it'll take a bit longer and I can't name a price til I see how things are priced in this area." She'd have to do a lot of brewing and candle making and such, but the boys could help with a lot of that if she told them what to do. It'd take her longer to build regular stock, but she'd earn money either way.

She grinned almost wolfishly. "I would love to do that when the time comes."

"Lived out of suitcases and hotel rooms, or tents and backpacks, for so long I'm still sort of getting used to having spaces of my own again. I'm still away a lot, but more and more I'm finding I like the idea of somewhere to come home to that's got my own touch to it."

Rich nodded and reached into an inside jacket pocket and pulled out his wallet, careful not to flash his shoulder holster. He counted out several bills, thought for a few seconds, then counted out a few more and offered them to Genie. "Half down, and a little more to get you started on this room. Fair enough? Let me know when you've a firm price and I'll make up the balance."

His smile grew a little more cheeky. "Well that's a date then. Make an evening of it? Dinner too? I'm a pretty fair cook."

"We lived in the farmhouse for a long time, but we wanted to come to London for a while at least. Owen will be going to Hogwarts next year, and it was more convenient for now." She wasn't sure what their plan was other than they really needed to start exploring options about Owen's werewolf status. "Having a place," a den, "of one's own, it's important, I think."

She nodded, giving him a bright, thankful smile. "It looks great. I'll get on it right away," she told him. She'd start the brewing and making now, and take it up again after the next moon. "You want me to send them over in small batches?"

"I'm up for all that," she said, her own grin cheeky as well. She was up for just about anything, if she were honest. "Just don't overcook the meat and we'll be all good."

"We?" Rich raised a quizzing eyebrow. The last thing he wanted to do was hit on a bird with a significant other. After all, she might just being flirty for the fun of it. He could live with that.

He shrugged and pulled out a small case and dug out a business card that he handed to Genie. "Cell and house number as well as owl and work contacts. Never know when I'll be gone for a few days so it's best to get in touch with me first. Then you can just bring over each batch as you finish it and set things up properly."

"A girl after my own heart. Anything more than medium is too well done. And no boiled, overcooked sides, either."

"My mates and myself," Genie said. "Bunch of us live together. It's been easier. We all met up during the war or just after." She shrug one shoulder easily. It was the simplest explanation she had for what in reality was a somewhat complicated situation, but she had so far avoided letting anyone know her secrets, for all she was a horrible liar and a terribly honest person in general.

Genie glanced over the card and took her wallet from her bag, putting it into one of the pockets of it. She pulled her own out of it, the Muggle one she'd created years ago, and dug out a pen to cross out the landline she had written on it. "This is my cell," she said. "Just in case you need it to change anything, or whatever. Email and all is the same too." She flipped it and scrawled her new address. "I haven't even had time to have new ones made up, been too blasted busy since I moved here and it hasn't been priority."

She grinned toothily. "I like mine dead and maybe scared by a flame. Anything too much more than that is way too done."

"Ah. Mates are good. Mostly ran solo during the war, but I've managed to reconnect with a few from those days." Including Dora, which probably surprised some people, given that she had technically been on the other side until the Battle of Hogwarts.

A quick smile came and went from his face. "Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be poaching if I were to ring you up, say for dinner and a show or something like that... if you'd be interested, that is."

Then he did grin. "Met a Texan once, had tastes like that. He said something like, 'knock off the horns and hooves, bring it back to body temperature, put it on my plate'."

"We fell in with each other one after another, a bit. I don't know what I'd do without them." She grinned slightly. "Reconnecting is definitely a good thing. They're usually worth it."

Her smile became a bit playful and flirty. "No worries on that count. The only thing they'll be jealous of is missing out on the fun." Of course, she sometimes was with a couple of her mates, but it wasn't anything permanent by any means, not romantically at least. "And you may take that as being interested."

She laughed. "Practically hunting it himself," she said, confident in the thought she wouldn't be caught out with a joke about someone else. Sometimes there really was nothing else like running down her own prey, but she'd never admit that.

Rich nodded. "Closest thing to a family sometimes. In the end, you go on." A touch of sadness came to his eyes for a moment as he thought of the people from the war years that's he'd never be reconnecting with again. "It's a pretty good thing you have, from the sound of it."

His eyes lightened. "Well good then. Anything special you like to do? Have to admit to being a weekend broom racer when the season's on, but during the week and when I'm around weekends I've been known to get out and about."

"Nope. Just liked his cow rare, rarer, rarest. And his tequilia warm with salt and lime. Never developed the taste for the first, did for the second. And with that for a lead-in, now that business is done with, care for something? If you have to be off, I understand. If not, the kitchen is just a short walk away."

"It is," she said firmly. There was no doubt in her mind that her pack was something she really needed and wanted. "I wouldn't give them up for the world." They were her family now, for better or worse.

"I'm open for just about anything," she said. "I'll try everything once, and twice if I need to make sure." Her grin flashed naughtily at him for a moment. "Active things are always good." But so was staying in, so yes, she wasn't exactly that picky.

"Warm alcohol? The blasphemy!" she said with a laugh. "Unless it's ale. Ale can get a pass." She tugged idly on a curl. "I can linger, unless you want me gone. I'll just call for my ride when it's time, and she has stuff she can do." And if it were much later, she'd just call Alexander and get him to fetch her home. "What d'ya have?"

"There's clubs and dancing. Always looking for a dance partner that can keep up. And the restaurant circuit, to see what's new and good. Maybe even steal a recipe or two. If you're not one for the brooms, there's the south coast of France, or swimming in the Med from one of the western Greek ilands. Lots of possibilities."

Rich laughed. "Vodka stays in the freezer. Tequila, like good Bourbon, can be room temperature or chilled. It's an acquired taste." He shook his head. "Blew the rest of today off; back on the road late tomorrow afternoon. But I can get you home. Side along or port key, broom, or even just call a cab. There's usually a few hang about the pubs just the other side of the railroad underpass, just a hundred feet or so from my door."

"I've got most of the usual tipple, and even a few bottles of wine from the family vinyards - Mother's from the French wine district if you fancy an earthy red."

"I don't do much formal dancing -- haven't had any practice -- but I work at the club, so pretty much any other sort of dancing I will claim some excellent moves for." And she thought rather well of her moves on the floor with a partner, even if some of them could prove quite naughty. "Food and brooms, well, those are all well and good too. Haven't had a fabulous broom in ages." She resisted the urge to be over the top with innuendo even though it was an excellent opening.

"I'll try whatever you're having, to start," she said. It'd been a while since she'd tried new things that weren't of her own invention. It was practically impossible for her to get drunk anymore, sadly enough, but she could enjoy herself nonetheless. "Thanks, lovey. I can't Apparate and I'm always worried I'll get stuck somewhere in the magical world anymore." Irrational? Maybe. But she'd also been cornered by an anti-werewolf wizard before, so.

"I've been known to give lessons," Rich said with a laugh. "Know a few out of the way clubs if you want to practice. Always been more of a fan of the sort of dancing where you get to hold the lady close. Lessons on insanely fast brooms, too, if you've ever wanted to try a racer."

"Over to the kitchen then. A little Bourbon on the rocks? I was considering a refil when you knocked. It's Colorado, an American Bourbon the people over at Vinopolis suggested to me."

He shook his head. "No worries then. This is Southwark, in the thick of muggle London. Tube and bus stops are a short walk from here too. Even inside here, I keep magic to a minimum to keep from mucking about with the electronics and appliances in the place. But my foyer is pretty heavily warded and I can key or Apparate you out of there any time you need to be off."

"WEll, like I said, I'll try anything at least once," Genie said with another smile. Directly after the moon aside, she was a graceful mover, and dancing wouldn't be that hard, she suspected. "Now fast brooms, that'd be a blast too. Owen would be so jealous." She chuckled slightly to herself. "He's just turned eleven, and he loves to fly," she explained.

"Works for me. I'm not terribly picky," she told him. "So I'll give it a go."

"It seems teeming. We've got our places in Angel," she said. "And we don't do much magic either. I swear I'm lucky to remember the wand some days." She really should save up and get her her own wand. But other days it really didn't seem that worth it.

Rich nodded. "Some kids just take to flying. My father got me in to a kiddie class race when I was five and I've been hooked ever since. Quidditch was just something to do during school when I could only race on weekends. If your young Owen wants to learn how it's done, bring him along. Bluebottle will be releasing the Kids's Broom to the market soon. Speed limited and has a parental remote override. Good for learning basic technique, and I have a couple if two-place trainers if he'd like lessons. You too."

In the kitchen he poured three fingers of Bourbon into his empty glass, then got out a clean glass and did the same for Genie. "Ice and water dispenser in the refrigerator door if you prefer, but this is pretty smooth."

Rich leaned against the kitchen counter and shrugged. "During the war I got in the habit of carrying three different wands. You never knew. Still do most days. Habit, I guess. You know how it is... or... maybe you don't. Sorry... Hopefully you don't."

"He's done pretty good so far. I expect him to make a team when he gets to Hogwarts." When, not if. Gods, she really did need to figure out how to contact a potentially sympathetic board member. The fact that she was scared to be outed was superfluous next to Owen's needs. "Thanks, he'd be so excited. He'll only start Hogwarts next year, but an edge could help. We don't have much money for stuff like that, though," she said, upfront as always about stuff like that.

Genie took the glass with a thank you and sipped. "Not bad," she said. It did feel warm going down, so that was good.

She propped her hip against the counter. "I lost my wand during the war," she told him. "And I'm saving for a better replacement than what I have. I was stuck in the Muggle world until I was of age, and even then, I've not had much to do with it until recently, and that's mostly due to Owen, I'll be honest. We know he'll get his letter this year, and we want to make the best of it for. So yeah, I get what you're saying, but we've been able to protect ourselves well enough so far."

They had other gifts that would make anyone attacking them quickly regret it if they got close enough. They didn't have to be good at hand to hand to do a lot of damage.

Rich shrugged a little. "I donate a fair bit of change to the Fawley Foundation. They won't object to me cutting out the middle man occasionally. Kid needs a scholarship for school, supplies, whatever, have him write me care of my work address or come by the office and talk to me. I'll work something out. Flying lessons are always free. I imagine I can lay my hands on a pitch-legal Quidditch broom or two."

He nodded. "I'm in and out of the muggle and wizarding worlds both, all the time. Sometimes go days without pulling out a wand. Still..." He shrugged again. "If you need a better grade of loaner, I can probably help you out there, too, if you're not real fussy about who the last owner might have been. Souvenirs from the war, I suppose you could say."

She noted down the foundation name in her mind to look up at a later time. She didn't want to be too too interested in things like that, not to someone she'd just met at least. "We're still looking into costs and all, but we'll see. He's a good boy." She loved Owen. He was a good boy, a good pack mate, and she thought he'd turn into a good man as he grew up.

"We've not had as much to do with the wizarding world as we could, until recently." She shrugged. She hmmmed for a moment, biting her lower lip then taking a long sip of drink. "Hm. I'm not sure. I was Snatched, so it seems a little... creepy, maybe."

"We knew we couldn't save everybody, get everybody at risk out of the country. Had to try anyway. Sometimes it just didn't work out."

Genie shrugged and sipped her drink again. "Don't worry about it. I don't. What happened happened, and I ended up getting away and in the Muggle world." It was hellaciously more complicated, of course, but she didn't get hung up on that. She was more hung up about her family than that.

"I'll keep that in mind, thanks. I just think sometimes they retain a bit of their past, and I wouldn't want that." It was fine for some people, but call her paranoid...

"Yeah, well..." Richard shrugged. "Always tried to do my best. Still do. One of the regrets I have from the war is that sometimes my best wasn't good enough." He shrugged again and took a healthy swallow of Bourbon. At least Genie's wasn't one more face to be added to his nightmares. "Suppose I'll get over it." He chuckled wryly. "Now I just try to do my best at work. Compensation, probably."

He nodded. "They do tend to do that. It's something I've learned to work with. You get used to it."

Rich grinned in an attempt to change the mood. "So should I see about throwing something for dinner or order takeaway? What's your schedule look like? Fancy a movie on the big screen or a splash in the hot tub to get the feel for the thing before I get you off home?"

"You're not responsible for what everyone else does," Genie told him with kind bluntness. "No one could single-handedly save our world, not even Harry Potter. So it's not worth beating yourself up over, in my book." She was a bit sorry she'd mentioned it, not having expected that reaction.

"Let's get some takeaway and hit up that hot tub, I think. I mean, I know have anything particular to wear, but so long as that's not a problem." She grinned a little wolfishly. "That way we can have a nom and I can get a feel for the place personally."

Rich gestured with a glance. "Closet in the bedroom has an assortment of loaner suits, although I'm not especially shy if you're not. Too much time in Sweden. Saunas and the like."

There's a Chinese place that will deliver here a couple of blocks away, or we can hit the Gourmet Burger right across the street and you can get them to run up something rareish to suit your taste if you'd prefer."

Genie shrugged and grinned impishly. "I've been told I don't have a shy bone in my body. Haven't ever really have." A trait she shared with her brother to an extent, she knew, but she banished the thought of the wayward man from her mind, much more interested in someone else with similar interests.

She swirled her drink around and shrugged. "What do you feel like? I'm not picky, honestly. And it's your place."

"Burgers it is, then. Take away, and I'll put some music on when we get back. Maybe even do up a pitcher of mojitos to go with the warm water."

Rich raised an eyebrow. "That sound to your liking?"

Genie grinned at him somewhat wolfishly. This might end up a lot more fun than just her bit of brewing she'd do up for him. She never minded that, no, not one little bit, and it could be a lot of fun. "I think that sounds just about perfect, Rich," she told him. "Let's go hunt us down a meal and then enjoy the water."
