"It wasn't intentional," Marcus started to say, before the rest of what Roger had just said processed through his brain, and he fell silent. The response to his apology and the fact that the rest of the team had also been worried registered vaguely in the back of his mind, but he was incapable of focusing on that at the moment.
He had to be hearing things, wishful thinking making him believe possibilities he'd always thought impossible. But Roger looked strangely nervous, something Marcus had never seen before, and he couldn't think of anything that the younger man might have said instead that he could heard incorrectly. Still, he couldn't quite bring himself to believe it, and without much input at all from his brain, he heard himself ask quietly, "Wait, what?"
