RP: Afternoon Break
Who: Lavender Brown, Hyperion Montgomery
What: Boooooored
Where: The Ministry
When: Friday afternoon
Rating: SFW, I guess

This case was going to be the death of her. This case was the reason Lavender had gone into the Hit Wizards instead of the Aurors.

I'm not cut out for investigating, Lavender lamented, resisting the urge to simply flop all over her desk and paperwork in a fit of Friday afternoon ennui. The Crup fighting ring case was going nowhere and she would have cried about the frustration of it if she hadn't been made of slightly sterner stuff. There wasn't even anyone in the office who would be good at helping her relieve the tedium for the next few hours until she could go home and enjoy her weekend off. Hopefully a weekend without work would provide a little clarity.

But...

Lavender grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill. She quickly drew a frankly terrible sketch of a cup of coffee, then decided to label it in case the recipient thought it looked more like a toilet or something. She added three question marks and signed it before prodding it with her wand. The parchment folded itself up neatly into the shape of a paper aeroplane. Lavender threw it towards the door where it glided smoothly out of the office and down the corridor to the Aurors where she knew it would land squarely on Hype's desk.

Sighing, she slumped in her chair. Hopefully he wouldn't be too busy.

Hyperion was bored. He'd finished all the paperwork for his latest mission more than an hour ago, and there wasn't anything Wizengamot related for him to focus on at the moment, so he was left sitting at his desk wishing he'd brought a book with him. He was just about to go and get himself another cup of tea when an interdepartmental memo landed on his desk.

"Oh thank Godric," he said fervently, taking a moment to read the message before smiling and writing a hasty reply and sending it back towards Lavender. "Just going out to meet someone," he said vaguely to the head of the current watch."

Not even five minutes later, he was sitting at a booth in the cafeteria with his back to the wall, two cups of coffee in front of him. "So, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

Lavender sighed for the umpeenth time, raking her fingers back through her hair. "One, it's Friday afternoon. Two, I am so stuck on a case that I want to do... things to the paperwork with my letter opener." She made a vague stabbing action. "Oh, and three, it's always nice to see your face," she added as an afterthought.

Picking up her coffee, she sipped it gratefully. "What about you? I didn't drag you away from anything, did I?"

Hyperion rested his chin on his fist and tilted his head at her. "What's the case then," he asked curiously. "Is it worse then the one about possessed cabbages they've got some of the Aurors working on?" He snorted and gave her a winning smile. "Why thank you, my face appreciates being appreciated."

He took a sip of coffee and shook his head. "Nope, I've finished all my paperwork and the junior Aurors I sent out to follow some leads for me owled an hour ago to tell me apart from a particularly old weasel, they didn't find anything of note at the house they stormed." He sighed and then smiled at her. "Plus, no Wizengamot hearings until Monday. What's new in your life then?"

"What I wouldn't give to deal with something like possessed cabbages." Then she could just blast them. Probably. "No, it's the Crup fighting ring." Just saying it was enough to bring on a wave of frustration. "The one I'm working with Susan and Nev. Just feels like we've hit a brick wall." Lavender pulled a face. "A really hard, annoying wall."

Lavender wrapped her hands around her cup, enjoying the warmth. "You know what? I don't think there's anything new and I quite like that. Everything seems to be pretty good right now." She put one hand on the table. "Tough wood."

"Oh I don't know," Hyperion disagreed with a shake of his head. "They smothered at least two Muggles to death and they make this really disturbing 'whomp' noise when they head towards you en masse." He tilted his head and nodded sympathetically. "Yeah, Susie mentioned that you lot tried to interview the local business owners but didn't get much? I can't even imagine how annoying that would be."

He lifted his eyebrows at her. "So, things are getting serious with Mac then I take it," he asked, with a teasing smile. "Oh, no, no need to tell me about the wood touching - there's no need to get graphic dear!"

Lavender blinked. "I'm trying to picture that. Whomping cabbages sound both disturbing and... intriguing." Not to mention a more active case than the Crup fighting ring. "Business owners, employees, even some ex employees of the night club." There had been a bit of a high turnover staff a few months ago. "Someone is lying. Probably. Just got to figure it out. Somehow." She wrinkled her nose.

She couldn't help but blush a little. "Things with Mac are good. Really good." Her fingers drifted to the gold heart necklace hanging around her neck and she smiled. "No need to be cheeky!" His teasing rolled off her easily. "Besides, I save the graphic stuff for Susan, not your delicate ears."

Hyperion shuddered dramatically. "Like I said, nastier than they first appear, but yeah I see your point." He sighed and twiddled his spoon for a second. "Have you gone down any of the routes that we're not technically supposed to go down yet," he asked quietly. "You know, like when you enter a house because the door was accidentally blasted off it's hinges and you need to ensure everyone's alright?"

"Hey, my ears aren't so delicate," he defended with mock heat. "Just because I don't do the do as much as some people think I should..." he trailed off and made a face. "Okay fine, I am a bit delicate."

"Everyone's been very supportive of our investigation," Lavender said, sighing. "No one seems shady. And we haven't found any injured Crups lately." She didn't have to say it: whoever was running the ring knew that they were looking and had buried themselves deeper underground.

Lavender grinned. "Luckily, I don't think you're the most delicate person in the department."

Hyperion groaned sympathetically. "I hate that, seriously! I wish criminals would be more open in breaking the law so we could nab them quicker and with less collateral damage, aye? 'Twould be much easier." He made a face and shook his head with a sigh. "Still, that would make the game much more boring."

He lifted his eyebrows at her questioningly. "Oh aye, and who is the most delicate person in my department then? I'm dying to know!"

"Yeah, wouldn't be much of a challenge if they just lined up nicely for us outside the Ministry." As much as she knew they would crack the case eventually, this middle bit where there was nothing to do but wait for more evidence (or for someone to have an amazing brainwave) was rather discouraging.

"Oh, aye," Lavender teased, leaning forwards over her coffee. "Well, I'd say it's a toss-up between my favourite little trainee Hit Wizard who is super adorable and collects ceramic unicorns. Or Harry."
