Tapas and Beer
Who: Dean and Seamus
What: Holiday in Spain
Where: Grenada
When: Thursday late-afternoon / evening
Rating: SFW for now

Seamus sat at the corner table of the tapas bar nearest their hotel, his beer and a huge coffee table book in front of him. He wasn't usually one to be particularly impressed by old buildings - probably something to do with going to school in a castle for seven years - but even he had to admit that the alhambra had been something special. The intricate carving and the series of arches had been quite unlike anything he'd become accustomed to at Hogwarts. As well as walking around the courtyards and hallways accessible to the muggle guided tours, they'd been shown some of the life inside the building, the magical research and education that muggles had no idea still went on in the ancient building. The hardcover book Seamus was flipping through covered both aspects - focusing on pictures more than text. It was, theoretically, a present for his mam but Seamus had a feeling both he and Dean would be picking it up again after they'd returned to England. He'd have bought two if only the price were a little less steep.

He looked up as Dean returned from placing their food order at the bar. "Did I say thanks for dragging me along to that yet?" Seamus asked, grinning. He hadn't been keen to go but was glad Dean had insisted. "I wish I had Dominic's eye for a photograph. Mine always come out a bit shit." As he spoke he glanced out the nearby window. Despite the chill temperature, the sky was the clear, bright shade of blue he usually associated with summer. "Do we really have to go home soon?"

Dean took one look at Seamus' 'drawing' and had to bite his lip hard to stop from laughing really loud. Thankfully he laughed too and Dean could snort through a laugh, shaking his head. "If you say so. I live to please you, after all!"

He was relatively used to Seamus' mind taking big leaps, but it still surprised him, and often amused him. "I retain just enough History of Magic to know pissing off dwarves at least would be a horrible idea. Actually I just avoid pissing off other beings in general. Tends to be a bad plan," he said and then shrugged. He paused, considering Seamus' statement and gave a half-shrugging nod. "I can't actually argue with that. Although you've got to concede he can do impressive things with his broom!" Not that Dean had seen much of Wood flying since their school days, but that really wasn't the point of the joke.

Dean was digging enthusiastically into another plate when Seamus spoke again and he continued chewing while he weighed his thoughts. "I'm not sure. I mean, a screening process to prevent the arseholes would make it super complicated, but in theory it's kind of a fun idea."

They were drawing some attention from the rest of the customers in the bar, but Seamus didn't care. He was happy - really, genuinely happy - which had been a rare feeling of late. "You do," he agreed, slumping comfortably against Dean as his fork meandered over the plates while he tried to decide what to eat next. "And very good at it you are." Which only confirmed that more holidays with Dean were definitely a good idea.

He snorted delightedly at Dean's bawdy joke. "No points," he said, once he'd recovered and could sort of present a straight face. "Too obvious, too cliche. For shame, Dean! And you on the Quidditch team and everything." Granted, the only person making obvious innuendos during Dean's brief time on the team had probably been Seamus himself, but that wasn't the point. "Fuckin' leprechauns are worse than dwarves," he added, as his mind leapt kangaroo-fashion back to the previous point." Possibly that was national pride talking, but Seamus would never admit it.

"Or just... get a load of bad poetry together before the day?" he said, stealing the plate Dean had been digging in to before he could finish the lot. "Generic, or with spaces for hair colour or something... Then I could send that out on request and none of it would be too personal. Besides, I could give people the option to opt out at the bar. Charge a couple of knuts and give it all to charity..." His mind was really working now and he turned the sheet of paper over, abandoning his fork to scribble down all that he'd just said. "Lockhart managed to hire some dwarves for the day... Leprechauns might think it was funny." Of course, there was still the question of finding them. Seamus rapidly scanned through his list of friends to see who might be able to help. Rolf? Leprechauns were technically magical creatures...

Dean smiled contentedly and nudged against Seamus' slumped form, just to affirm his presence.

He gave an absolutely delighted chuckle at Seamus'response and stuck his tongue out. "I saw an opportunity to make a terrible joke, so sue me!" he said. His short stay on the Quidditch team hadn't exactly cured him of his urge to make dirty jokes about riding brooms/players. Some things just could not be helped. Plus Seamus had told them all when he was on the team. Most of them more than once. Dean idly wondered if it would have been worse if they had both been out then. Or more awkward. In his meandering thoughts Seamus' had clearly moved on again. Or back as the case may be.

Dean made a half-hearted prod for the dish Seamus was moving with his fork, but didn't actually come close to either Seamus' hand or the food. He listened to Seamus planning and was reminded, as he occasionally was, that unlike his vague Hufflepuff sensibilities Seamus had almost been put into Ravenclaw. He made appropriate hmms of agreement as he picked idly at another plate. "Sure that could work, plus the charity thing is always good."

Something in Dean's tone, or his lack of engagement in the conversation, reminded Seamus that he was on holiday for the deliberate purpose of not working. And yet here he was, doing work... He folded the piece of paper up and leaned against Dean as he shoved it into his pocket. "Right," he said, determination evident. "Spain. Tapas. Sunshine." He peered out of the window again as he pushed the pen back towards Dean. "Well. It's sort of sunshiney?" Not exactly warm, not outside, but still more pleasant weather than they were likely to get at home. Besides, here Seamus could actually sit back and enjoy the weather rather than thinking about whether it would bring more people to the pub or keep them at home.

He swapped a few of the plates around, putting things Dean hadn't yet tried in front of him while stealing a few new things for himself. "They're all good," he said around a mouthful of prawn. "But I think the paella yesterday was my favourite."

Dean snorted at Seamus' abrupt abandonment of work-related activities and slipped his pen away again. Clearly he'd just remembered their intention to not work on their holiday. Well, Seamus was intending not to work, going somewhere interesting was basically an invitation for Dean to become attached to his sketchbook even more than usual. "It's sort of sunshiney. Well, it's not throwing it down with rain, or sleet at least and I'll take that thanks," he said.

A couple of people were looking over at them again, thanks to them being so pressed together, but Dean had frankly long since forgotten to care. Enough of his close friends thought they were or should be together, a few strangers was hardly a novelty.

He attacked the newer plates with enthusiasm, picking up forkfuls of this and that to try, most of it was absolutely delicious. And what wasn't was at least pretty good. "They are. I think I'm developing a thing for their style of omelettes though, and squid, which is a thing I had no idea I liked. Mostly though I just want those deep fried things covered in honey," he mused. "Susan will be pleased. There is no way she can tell us we've been neglecting to eat! My favourite thing though? Just letting go of our responsibilities for a week and having time to spend with each other."

Seamus paused to look at Dean, rolling his eyes with exaggerated slowness. "You are such a sap," he announced. He didn't disagree, of course not, but sometimes actually saying these things out loud felt so... Seamus didn't have a word for it - and at other times he was completely fine with getting all sentimental. Fortunately, Dean put up with any and all of Seamus's moods without complaint. Seamus supposed he sort of had to, with as long as they'd known each other, but then he remembered Susan had known them almost as long as could still show Seamus the sharp side of her tongue when he was being an idiot.

So, shaking his head, Seamus just grinned and pushed his curls back. "Love you too, gorgeous," he muttered - with as much affection as mockery. He slid away from Dean then to stand by the table. "And on that note - I need to pee. Don't eat all the food while I'm gone."

Dean rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at Seamus. Sometimes they managed a vague sense of sentimentality without the teasing, mostly they didn't. It just wasn't how they worked.

"Yeah, yeah and you say I'm the sap," he said, rolling his eyes again, brushing off the affection as someone who knew there was plenty more where it came from despite the shot of warmth it pushed through his belly. That was something to ignore. "And I'm not promising anything about the food," he said as Seamus got up. "Pee quickly!" he added to Seamus' back as he stepped away. Not that he was actually planning on eating all of the food, but he wasn't going to slow up just because Seamus had to go to the loo.
