RP: Holiday Hangover brunch
Who: Romilda, Charlie, Emma, Marietta (all invited, others who would have been invited to a small gathering also welcome)
What: It's Boxing Day and maybe everyone needs a break from holidays and families an festive-ness.
Where: Romi & Charlie's flat
When: December 26th, 2004, 2pm or so
Rating: NSFW (language and drinking knowing this crowd)

Romilda woke earlier than she thought she would on Boxing Day. By noon she was already in the shower and putting together a menu of things to order take away for the potluck brunch she'd invited the girls and Charlie to. After her shower, she made a couple of quick floo-calls to the right restaurants, and then dried and straightened her hair.

Christmas had been fairly quiet at the Vane household in Kent. She'd stayed over Christmas Eve but anything more than 24-or-so-hours with her parents pushed the envelope for all three of them. A Pureblood family of little social standing and somewhat upper-class income, her father Andrew Vane was a barrister for the Ministry of Magic and her mother was a private tutor to young magical children - she worked with kids showing signs of magic but too young to receive their Hogwarts letter just yet. Christmas Eve, she and her mother had watched a Keeping up with the Kardashians marathon on muggle telly, and her parents had gone to bed early. They all woken by 8 or so in the morning and opened their gifts over eggies and toast and Romilda had spiked her coffee with Irish whiskey behind her father's back.

By the end of dinner she'd been bored out of her mind and the urge to ask her mother why she'd gotten so many jumpers for Christmas had her nearly biting her own tongue off. So she'd begged off at dessert and floo'd home to find a box for all the jumpers and drinking a bottle of wine. Or two.

Now she was casually dressed and wandering down Diagon Alley to pick up an order of jasmine rice from her favorite Thai restaurant (just a block down the muggle side of the Leaky Cauldron) and a few random Chinese dishes from another spot not far from there.

It was just before 2 when she made it back to the flat and set warming charms on her contributions to the luncheon. Romi took down dishes and cups and wine glasses and took out a box of wine she'd been wanting to try, figuring of their guests would be the last to judge.

Hearing someone moving around in the apartment (not having seen Charlie yet and not checking if it was him or if one of the girls had arrived), she shouted, "In the kitchen, come on in and help yourself," she set the box of Sauvingnon on the counter and turned to greet whoever it was who had actually decided to show up.

Charlie had spent the usual rather raucous Christmas Day in a house full of Weasleys with a huge mess of family and presents and far too much food and drink. It had been a somewhat organised form of chaos since he was fairly young, no matter where Christmas had happened. When he was in Romaina he'd always been grateful for the community feel of the staff to make up for his lack of family. Less red hair, but a lot of the same affection.

He had come in rather late, full of both food and alcohol and had managed to stow away all of the leftovers his mother had pushed on him (he was convinced she had been overestimating and ensuring leftovers for so long that it got a little worse as the years went on). He had basically pulled off his leg and collapsed into bed and proceeded to sleep like the dead and not wake up again until around 1.

He had thankfully not been too hungover, but it had taken him a few minutes to drag himself to the shower. He couldn't hear Romi, so he assumed she was probably still asleep. After making some of the fucking strong coffee he'd bought at the same time as Romi's gift he had headed back to his room to put himself back together, and decided to hang out starting the book Hermione had given him. Muggle book, sure, but she'd picked one that featured dragons, which intrigued him. He'd got a bit distracted and realised it was almost 2 and he'd not actually done anything for the little gathering they were having. He stuck a stray (clean) quill in his book and headed quickly for the kitchen.

"Only me," he said, making his way over to the covered plates and boxed up food he'd brought with him. "Good day yesterday?" he asked, adjusting his latest Christmas jumper (complete with candy-striped letter 'C'). "Thanks for my present by the way. Seems like we had similar ideas."

Romilda sent Charlie a smirk, "Seems we did. Do you think people realize two of the most successful business owners in Monument Alley are just a couple of haphazard drunkards?" She looked his sweater up and down and couldn't stifle a laugh, "I think it's safe to say Momma Weasley outdid herself this year with the jumpers." She wondered briefly what the rest of the Weasley children's gifts looked like.

Looking over the leftovers he'd brought home, she clucked her tongue and set about pulling off lids and starting heating charms, paying no mind to what he might be doing with them.

"I invited Emma and Marietta, made sure they knew this was a small gathering, and I trust they'll come bearing food and booze to join in on my box of wine and Asian take away." Watching him with his coffee made her thirsty and she proceeded to pour herself a hefty glass of the wine for herself.

"Speak for yourself, I'm a hopalong drunk!" he joked. He didn't actually drink heavily, especially when there was anything like work to be done. It played havoc with his balance. He drained the last of his coffee, now somewhat tepid from sitting while he read and only sipped absently. "Urgh. Not a fan of cooling coffee, tastes like piss," he said. "And Mum's jumpers are always impressive, but you aren't wrong," he said with a shrug.

Charlie cancelled a couple of her spells with a wave of his wand. "Oi! Bubble and Squeak, lady. Fried up veg, not just heating charms," he protested, grabbing a frying pan and directing a cutting charm at the potatoes and other vegetables to chop them up roughly. He wasn't the best cook but he could do a pretty decent range of simple things, especially if it only required throwing everything in a pan and cooking it until done. "It's Christmas, a bit of indulgence isn't going to hurt."

He nodded. "Sure, works for me. I didn't actually invite anyone but George, and I don't think he's going to show up." He was aware he could probably do with a few more friends, but mostly it didn't bother him until it came down to things like holidays and everyone started giving him sad looks. He grabbed some juice from the fridge and threw it into a glass and shrugged before adding in a small slug of vodka. He would have put in champagne, but he didn't actually think they had any.

"Most of the time I'm a crawling drunk, if we're being honest," she snorted at her own sort-of-joke. Holding her hands up she stepped back from the cooking and gave him a look. "There's a reason I picked up take away instead of attempting to reheat my mother's already too dry corned beef."

"George, you say? Now he's a good looking bloke, but you don't think he'll come? Who can resist avoiding the Boxing Day shopping insanity with a totally ridiculous brunch?" She wrinkled her nose. Romilda loved shopping, much to her parents' dismay, even as she paid her own bills these days, but shopping days were another beast entirely.

Just then, Marietta knocked.

Marietta headed home after completing her work and took a nice long shower and then snuggled down into her bed for a few hours. While she enjoyed the money her second job afforded her she didn't really care to much for the overnight assignments. Marietta enjoyed being alone in her bed. She could spread out or curl up without having to worry about the comfort of another.

Finally around one she rolled out of her bed and tossed a preset loaf into the oven as she took yet another shower and proceeded to get dressed in a simple pair of jeans and a baggy sweatshirt. There was no one she needed to impress and comfort was definitely the order of the day.

Finally, she made her way to Romilda's along with freshly baked bread and a tub of honey butter. Once she had greeted her hostess, Marietta grabbed a drink and settled herself into one of the chairs so she could people watch.

"Marietta! Gorgeous! How are you? How was your Christmas?" Romilda was charming in a strange sort of way with her girls - she wasn't as crass with them as she was with Charlie, but she didn't put on airs on purpose, either. She just sort of slipped into another version of herself around them.

"The bread smells delicious! Doesn't it Charlie?" She looked to her roommate with raised eyebrows.

"Hey, Marietta, welcome!" Charlie called from the stove, waving a wooden spatula and swearing as a stray bit of vegetable mush clinging to it dropped on his jumper. He scooped it off and into his mouth, not impressed as it was still fairly cold.

He sniffed the air and nodded. "Smells great," he said. "I fucking love fresh bread." He sort of knew in theory how to make bread, had seen his mother do it several times, but had never tried himself. Seemed far too complicated.

"Hope you had a good Christmas!"

Marietta easily handed the bread over for Romilda to place with whatever was being brought by the others. "I'm glad you like it. I don't make fresh bread often. In fact this is dough that my mother sent home with me after our celebration." Her mother often admonished her for not eating a large enough variety so whenever she had the opportunity she sent food with her daughter that she could prepare later.

"Christmas was productive," she simply stated. She couldn't go into too many details because that would just open up more questions and confidentiality was a big part of their business. So much so that only a select few knew what she did when she was "home for the evening".
