Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: ernie macmillan, character: justin finch-fletchley, character: susan bones

Who: Justin and OPEN

What: Justin's relaxing a little (yeah right).

Where: Finnigan's

When: Sunday evening

Rating: Pretty sure it's SFW

Justin sat at the bar, an ale at hand. He was finally done with his shifts for the week and was ready to enjoy at least a whole day of 'me' time. Not enough to actually get drunk, but just a little time around people before he locked himself up in his flat with nothing else but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a good book. Maybe he'd read that Jane Austen book he had borrowed a while ago.

"There you are," Ernie called out as he spotted his best mate at the bar, starting in on a drink. He slung an arm over Justin's shoulders and squeezed him in a one-armed hug. "You will not believe the week I've had. Please tell me yours was less exciting than mine."

As he pulled away and took a stool, he waved to the person on shift behind the bar and made the universal signal for the usual.

Justin gave Ernie something between a 'ugh' and a growl. "Depends, did it involve a grown man.." Then he pulled his best disgusted face. "It is too atrocious to even tell. Not to mention the puke kid." He sighed and took a large gulp on his ale.

"And it was all today!"

Ernie made an overly dramatic pout, mostly for show, and lifted his hand to cup Justin's shoulder. "So the day from hades, right? Come on, tell Healer Ernie all about it. You've got to get it out of your system somehow."

He nodded his thanks as his drink was placed before him - pina colada complete with colourful umbrella and a cherry.

Justin chuckled. "And when does Healer Ernie get to unload huh?" he replied teasingly, then snorted as the drink showed up. He couldn't understand for the life of him, why Ernie liked that drink so much. Yuk.

Justin much preferred to stick to ale and wine.

"Healer Ernie is perfect, don't you know, and never needs any help ever," he replied with a wink, always more than willing to poke fun at himself for his friends' benefit. "But all right, you tell me yours, and I'll tell you mine. And if you're nice, I'll apparate you home afterwards since you're such a lightweight, mate."

Justin, who had already taken in half of his pint, laughed wholeheartedly without any reserve whatsoever. It was happening more and more lately, mostly when he was surrounded by his friends, than ever before and Justin could almost feel as if he was right back at Hogwarts, having fun.

He shook his head. "Yeah and Mediwizard Justin knows it's all bullshit so.." he drummed his hands against the counter and nodded. "Just a crappy week. Some of the last days of summer so people call in sick to go out and spend longer weekends out in the country while I pick up the slack." He sighed and shrugged his shoulders.

Ernie pretended to look put out when his 'perfection' was called out as bullshit, but it quickly turned into a grin. This was exactly why he loved Justin - he saw right through him and wasn't afraid to say something about it.

"Ah, I get that," Ernie said knowingly, and he did. Personally, he preferred taking time off when the weather was poor, which would give him the perfect excuse to stay at home and cuddle in his bed with his close friends. "Well, you can take some time off later and leave them to pick up the slack. They owe you, after all."

He plucked the cherry from his drink and ate it before taking his first sip. "Well, in our unit, someone started coming out of a stupor they'd been in for about seven months. Unfortunately, when they came out, they had flashbacks to the last war and tried taking a healer's wand because they thought another patient was a Death Eater. It... wasn't fun."

Justin hummed, his glass to his mouth. "I get that, but sheesh, it's hard to do extra shifts already, but some were really last minute. I am counting favors at this point and will trade this time later on. I'm not a machine." he told his mate.

"Now that has to suck. I hope they won't let him or her out too soon though.. give them time to recover and actually be safe to be around." He didn't envy Ernie, not at all.

"Of course you're not a machine, though if you were, you would be an excellent one. Though I do wonder what sort of machine you would be..." Ernie was definitely not someone people would want to get started on the If you were a ____, what would you be? game because with him, the game never ended.

"Oh, he's nowhere near ready to go yet. His body has lost some muscle mass from being prone for long periods and he needs to rehabilitate, but then he also needs to work on some mental recovery as well. I don't anticipate him being gone for another two months at least, but it's nice that he's more awake and aware than ever. And once we calmed him down and he realized what happened, he felt awful about it."

Justin snorted. It had been a while since they'd done a game of If you were a _____, what would you be? and he wondered if they really should start this. It would get ridiculous pretty quickly. It could also turn out to be pretty epic. "Dunno, maybe.." He bit his lower lip. "I don't know. Seems boring to be a machine. No food, no games, no fun, no friends, no feelings, no.. no love."

"I was asked to do a few shifts in your ward. Someone's taking a well deserved week off and I figured I could expand my horizons. Take a break from the emergency room and all." He wondered if it was such a good idea after all. "I'm glad you don't just throw them out there without the proper care."

"But what if you were a machine like an air-o-plane, then you could fly and travel all around the world. Don't know if that would make up for no love, but it would be a pretty good start."

Ernie's face broke out in an ecstatic grin. "That's brilliant! Imagine, you and I, working side-by-side, just like back at school. I'll introduce you to all the patients, at least the ones who're still conscious, and I'll volunteer to show you the ropes. We have some pretty specific routines and schedules with certain patients, but since it's a daily thing, it becomes old hat in no time." He waved off the comment about throwing people out without proper care. "We only do that to Slytherins," he joked.

Justin quickly and quietly said: Aeroplane, when Ernie made the mistake, but both of them were used to it at this point. Ernie was still getting used to the Muggle pronunciation and Justin usually corrected him respectfully. "Hmm, it would get lonely. You know how I can't stand to be alone." It wasn't much of a joke as it was the reality, but the way Justin said it.. it was almost playful.

"Sounds like a plan. I might like routine for a change." He chuckled, finding it funny how routine would be a change of pace in his chaotic professional life.

Ernie tilted his head sympathetically. "Don't worry, mate - if you're a plane, then so am I. You don't think you'd be able to get rid of me that easily, do you?"

He nodded. "Exactly, and it's like that for some of the patients too. Life can be very disorganized, and having the structure helps some of them recover. And you never know, you might like it, at least for a change of pace like you said. Plus, we get visits from Neville, so that's nice too. Though if you were to work in just one place, where would you go?"

"You'd be my bloody pilot, is what you'd be mate." He told Ernie with a chuckled.

"Hmm, I think everyone needs this once in a while. Maybe you'd like a week in the emergency room, it's gets hectic at times." He smiled and bit his lower lip. "Just one place.." he repeated. "I'd be in the emergency room forever. It is the first line, we're the first to meet patients, assess their state and injury. Sometimes it's nothing big, but other times we get this rush.. And once in a while there will be something terrible with a great ending. We see a bit of everything." It wasn't all bad in there. Nor was it always easy and smooth. "What about you? You'd stay in the ward if you could leave?"

Airplanes, in Ernie's mind, were much like cars and other vehicles, and he tended to mix up terms and descriptions because, for the most part, it was all theoretical knowledge to him rather than something he saw everyday - but at least he tried. One thought stuck in his mind and he did his best to keep a straight face as he spoke it aloud. "You know, Justin, if you wanted my hand controlling your stick shift gear thing, all you had to do was ask."

Ernie shrugged. He nodded as Justin spoke - he'd done some time in other units during his training and he admired his friend for being able to keep up with the quick pace. "I'm happy for now, but I might want to change in a year or two. It depends on what my life is like. Janus Thickey is actually great if you want to start a family, but the way my love life is going, that won't be happening anytime soon. So if I had to go somehwere else, maybe poisons. That was a good training time I did there."

Justin threw his hands up in the air "Finally, he figured it out." he exclaimed, though it wasn't really heard by anyone else since there was music in the pub. "Was about time." Of course he kept a straight face all along making Ernie believe that he had been trying to get his friend in his trousers all along.

"Ooh, poisons sounds really interesting." He admitted, nodded slowly.

"Well, you made it so obvious," Ernie joked back. "And we both know I'm a catch. You'd be lucky to have me. Unfortunately, my heart belongs to one person and one only - and some day Professor Lockhart will get better and sweep me away from all this." At this, Ernie did completely lose it and nearly bent over in laughter.

Ernie took another sip of his drink before explaining further. "It really is. I don't get to use my potions knowledge much in JT, but it would be in constant use down in poisons. It's actually fun to work with them when Snape isn't breathing down our necks. Kind of like bartending, maybe - which means if the healer thing doesn't work out, I can always work for Seamus."

And speaking of which. "It was nice to have fun and dance last weekend. We don't do that enough, I think, what with work and other things. And not many people around here know how to cha-cha like you."

Justin gagged and shook his head. "Lockhart?" Surely Ernie knew by now that the wizard was a fake. "He's not even good looking. You'd be better off with me."

"I considered take the NEWT class in Potions once.." He had not been good enough for Professor Snape and even if he hadn't liked him, he surely had not deserved to die. "But I gave up. Settled for the easy way."

"But yeah, it was definitely amazing." He straightened proudly at Ernie's compliment. "I like the cha-cha."

"Hey, that's the love of my life you're talking about, and he had brilliant hair." He then pretended to look at Justin with a considerign eye. "But maybe you're right. Oh, take me home and ravish me, you sexy Muggleborn you."

Ernie nodded. "I remember that. Sometimes I wonder if it would be possible for some people to go back and redo their potions education. It should be an option, if you ask me. I'm sure more people would love it with someone else teaching it, and doesn't everyone deserve a second chance?"

Ernie grinned. "Of course, and you're brilliant at it. You wouldn't be my mate otherwise."

There was nothing, Susan mused, quite like being called into work on a Sunday to finalise preparations for a landmark Wizengamot hearing the following day. Nothing, that is except perhaps a choice adjectives that were best left unmentioned in polite company. Still, she'd overheard one of her colleagues giving a tour a new recruit and had been rather chuffed at his description of her being 'lethal and loyal in terrifyingly equal measures' so perhaps the day hadn't been a complete waste.

She'd just grabbed herself a firewhiskey when she spotted two of her favourite people in the world sitting at the bar. "Justin, Ernie," she cried happily, wandering over to them. "How the hell are you two?"

Justin's face broke into a large grin. "Hey there, beautiful!" he greeted her. It was quite nice to be able to spend time with his best friends even if it hadn't been planned.

He looked at Ernie, then Susan. "Maybe we should move to table?" he offered them both.

"Susan, you're just in time," Erni said as he slid off his stool to give her a quick hug and kiss. "Justin was just besmirching my secret love for Professor Lockhart, and saying I'd be better off with him, which we all know is ridiculous because with two healers together, there's never time for anything but the occasional hello."

He reachedout for his drink and held it up. "I'm good with a change if you are. Any seats that strike you, Sue?" He knew Susan was often more comfortable positioned in certain areas - Auror traiing and all - and was happy to let her choose their destination.

"Oh Merlin," she said hugging and kissing Ernie, before pouncing on Justin and engulfing him in a bear hug - no mean feat considering their differences in height. "Ernest Macmillan, everyone knows that your love for Lockhart was not a secret. I knew it, Justin knew it, Hannah knew it, Lockhart knew it," she paused and looked at Justin and then over at Ernie, her eyes narrowed in deliberation. "Maybe a quick shag would do you both good," she added with a smirk. "I could get you both into Seamus' apartment." She grinned impishly at them

Susan looked around the room, and spotted a table near the wall. "Over there," she said, dragging Justin behind her and trusting that Ernie would follow. Once they were firmly seated, she titlted her head questioningly at them. "So apart from discussing Gilderoy Lockhart and going at it like bunnies, what have you two been up to?"

Justin nodded as Susan told Ernie that everyone knew about his not so secret 'love' for Lockhart. "Yeah, we all knew it." He sighed loudly. "So sad to see that," He sniffled and shook his head. "When you clearly could have done much much better." He said with such false modesty that it was definitely a joke.

Then, his eyes grew a little wide and he almost choked on his own saliva. But replied only once they were seated. "That would screw up everything." He said pretty seriously.

"Such unsupportive friends I have," Ernie joked with a shake of his head. "Though maybe I should tell Seamus you've access to his flat for mid-day rendezvous."

Ernie settled into his seat and was more amused by Justin's reaction than he was by Susan's words. "Of course she was taking the piss, mate. If we were shagging, then who would I go to to complain about you?" He chuckled and playfully tapped his glass against Justin's.

"Anyway, we were just comiserating over bad weeks at work, and Just was just telling me that he was going to do a week in my ward. And you? Any details on the new position yet?"

"You are assuredly welcome darling," she with a huge grin. "You know I always have your back. Unless you're fighting with Justin in which case I curse you both and shut you in a cupboard."

Susan threw her head back and laughed, then reached across and squeezed Justin's hand reassuringly. "I was just joking, sweetie. I have a strict policy of only meddling in the lovelives of only one set of friends per friendship circle, so you're safe."

"Oooh is that right? That'll be lovely! I'm good, started it on Monday. Both Harry and I have been accelerated through the ranks due to our 'diligent and terrifying pursuit of justice' which is always nice when we've only been out of training two years." Her joyful expression sobered for a moment. "Although that does mean that we have to spend more time testifying to the Wizengamot."

He affectionately shook his head at Justin. "You've just had the week from hell, you're fine. I found out just over a week ago or so. She got a promotion, the lucky stiff, and will finally be getting a partner. Does that mean you and Harry are working together on cases now?"

"Ernest Dinnywick Thatcher MacMillan," Susan said with mock severity, a hand on her hip. "You are meant to come out of closets, not in them!"

Susan reached over and ruffled Justin's hair affectionately, "Yes goblin-brain, a new position." She grinned impishly at Ernie "As much as I know you'd like to uh, 'work' with him, yes I've been partnered with Harry. Insofar as Aurors need partners... We do a lot of cases individually, and take turns fronting for hearings."

"Anyway, since I've got you here. Exactly who do I need to threaten with maximum legal force to allow you both to come over mine on Friday night?"

"I agree with Ernie about cupboards, they are useful, especially at school." Somehow he ended up with a dopey smile, remembering that one particular incident in the Transfiguration wing.

He snickered when Susan said 'work' with Harry with emphasis. "Ernie's mind is permanently in the gutter, I think."

"Um.. it would have to be lethal. I don't know why you keep thinking I want to spend time with you." he said then leaned in to kiss Susan on the cheek. "You know I'll be there. People owe me favors."

"Oi, not the full name!" Though thankfully Justin agreed, and Ernie playfully poked his elbow into Justin's side - they were probably remembering similar cupboard incidents. There was little Ernie didn't tell Justin. Or Hannah. Or Susan for that matter, though there were certain things one knew that others didn't.

"Hey, for once my mind wasn't on the gutter in this one - though Harry's fit, for sure, and you could do a lot worse. We all know he's a thing for redheads anyway," he added with a chuckle.

"What's Friday for, when do you need me, and what do you need me to bring?" It was always that simple with Ernie - say you need him and he'd be there.

"Okay fine," she conceded. "I have been known to have interludes in cupboards in my time. Particularly at school. In fifth year. With that really hot Gryffindor girl.

Susan nodded emphatically at Justin, reaching over and squeezing his knee. "Ernest, you started on your belly in the dust. The gutter's a step up. As for Harry, well he is a nice lad but I think he's got his eyes on someone rather different, beyond which I will not say."

She smiled, relieved. "You two are absolute life savers, do you know that? Were I six foot four hunk of muscle and also male, I would take you both in a manly fashion and do filthy, filthy things to you both that would severely limit your abilities to walk for a week."

"Am I the only one who only heard about the cupboards without ending up in one?" He asked, worried. Had he really been that late on the bandwagon. But what could he do about it now, huh? He was a late bloomer and there as nothing else he could do.

"You cannot just leave us like that, you know." He told his friend, one of his eyebrow raised in questioning. "You know how curious I get.."

Ernie patted Justin's shoulder. "Hey, it's never too late to make use of a handy cupboard. I found it's more 'what's handy at the time' rather than 'I really want to shag in a cupboard'."

Ernie too had a raised eyebrow, always wanting to hear about his friends' romantic lives to see where he could meddle. "Justin's right, spill it."

He did chuckle at Susan's last statement, though. "Were you a male, I would gladly submit to your taking," he joked back. But you didn't answer the question - what's happening, and what do you need?"

He chuckled at Susan's comment about Edgar. "Should he have brought a boyfriend instead? And you talk as if you never had a girlfriend, or boyfriend, at nineteen. Merlin, how many of us had more than that by then." His eyes lit up, however, at Justin's mention of dessert. "Oh yeah, definitely something with chocolate, maybe with cherries or strawberries..." His eyes went dreamy as he trailed off.
