Entry tags:character: dean thomas, character: hermione granger

Who: Hermione and Dean (Harry can come in if he wishes)
What: Baking
Where: Hermione and Harry's flat
When: Tuesday evening
Rating: Really, it's Hermione we know it's SFW

Hermione had all the basics for a biscuit making session laid out on the kitchen. Eggs, flour, sugar, brown sugar, a bit of salt were all basics that she knew were necessary for most recipes. She had also gathered some chocolate, butter and lard, food color and a few other flavoring mechanisms. She wasn't quite sure what all she was in the mood to make but she knew she ought to at least try for a traditional sugar and chocolate chip if nothing else.

In fact she had just finished rolling out the sugar dough and was debating whether to stick to round and decorate each one like a Christmas bauble or to go for the shaped cutters when she heard a knock at the door. Grabbing up a towel she wiped her hands as she made her way to the front door. "Just in time to help me with some major design decisions," she beamed pulling the door open after having checked the wards to make certain Dean was on the other side.

Dean's main job for the day had been wrapping and sending his presents, which he'd managed to without much of an issue. He was seriously considering investing in an owl, if only for birthday and holidays. And maybe quote exchanges with Susan, which were always amusing.

Instead of slouching around in PJs and watching Christmas TV he was spending the evening with Hermione, helping her with baking. He doubted anyone as good as she was at potions was actually a disastrous cook, but that didn't always mean anything. So he'd gathered up some recipes and ingredients she might or might not have and his decorating kit into a bag and headed over to her flat.

"Hi, Hermione," he said, smiling as she opened the door. "Sounds like I'm just in time then. I brought some supplies," he said, indicating the bag. "I wasn't sure what you had, and I'm getting a bit of a collection."

Hermione could cook breakfast and dinner with no problem. Sweet things on the other hand were her bane. Her parents, being dentists who focused on good dental health, had never really been big on creating and having sweets in the house. She'd gotten them on occasions when they'd gathered with family but those had usually been baked in other homes not her own. The lack of lessons from her own mother mixed with the fact that Molly Weasley was her main competition made her a bit wary as to the actually quality of her baked goods.

"Aren't most men always just in time when there's cooking going on?" she joked knowing that Dean wasn't likely to gobble everything up as soon as it came out of the oven. "Seriously though, I can't decide whether to roll the dough into a log and do basic circles or use the cutters I have." She took a look at the bag of supplies and added, "I'm sure whatever you've brought will assist in either endeavor."

He shrugged. "I always am, but I live alone and do most of my own cooking so it's not exactly a good indication!" he said, grinning. He got rid of his jacket and followed Hermione to the kitchen, looking at the dough that was rolled out.

"Well, it depends what cutters you have. Can I see your recipe? Does it suggest chilling the dough?" he asked. As much as he liked to experiment a little with flavour combinations he didn't think it was the best thing to do with somebody else's cooking. And recipes. Recipes should be followed until you were really sure what you were doing.

"I can definitely do some decorating if you want to impress people though. Benefits of being an artist and some practice with icing. I can do fancy stuff," he said. He paused. "Well, some fancy stuff," he amended. Mostly he didn't bother when he was making his own biscuits but he had some some experimenting enough times he could do some things.

Hermione gave a slight chuckle. "At least you don't starve," she added. She ended up cooking more often than Harry simply to make sure she got a variety since his specialty was always something with chicken.

She directed Dean to where the dough sat. "I've already done all the prep work for it. Now there just needs to be a decision made about the final product." It was all still sitting in a bowl. She'd already laid out the rolling surface and some flour in anticipation for whatever the decision turned out to be. Beside it sat her set of cutters.

"True," he agreed, muttering about Seamus and needing to feed him under his breath.

He looked at the cutters she had set out and the dough, smelling the slightly sweet scent and smiling. "Some of these would be great for designs that are fairly simple but look impressive. We could split some off and do rounds for baubles though. Those have the same effect. Simple but impressive looking." He separated out the snowflake, Santa, reindeer and angel cutters and gestured to them. "These are all going to be pretty tricky to work with. Maybe the snowman too. It sort of depends if you want to do one or two shapes or a combination of a few. Let me just wash my hands and I'll show you what I brought to help decorate."

Hermione looked at the dough sitting on the counter. Why hadn't she thought of mixing the two? The circles wouldn't look out of place among a variety of other shapes as long as she mixed them in properly when setting up the presentation. A lack of thinking outside the box could be a detriment to creativity. "And that is precisely why I needed your artistic mind. I was so focused on one or the other I hadn't thought of doing a mixture." As he pulled a few to side the idea definitely solidified it's self. "Let's remove the snowflake and the gingerbread man as well. That way each looks more like a shape and less like a character." With that she moved them off to the side with the others before stepping back to follow suit and rewash her hands.

Dean nodded, encouraging. "That works for me," he said. He washed his hands, dried them off and went over to the bag Hermione had put down for him.

"Okay, so before we do the rolling and cutting let me show you this lot. I'm hoping you've got an insane amount of icing sugar because I've got disposable piping bags and their tips, food colouring, paintbrushes that have never been near actual paint, cocktail sticks and a variety of little sprinkly things," he said, pulling each thing out as he spoke. "Oh, and some edible glitter," he added with a grin. There were also a couple of stray things floating around in the bottom of his bag but that covered most of his supplies.

"So, minor baking issues aside how are you doing?" he asked, making sure his supplies were out of the way of where he assumed the dough would be rolled out.

Hermione turned to the cupboard and pulled down her container of sugar. She usually didn't start on the icing until the biscuits were safely in the oven. Then again she didn't usually have assistance on these projects. "As long as the glitter doesn't explode into one's face when they take a bite," she laughed.

She then turned the bowl of dough over onto the counter and pulled out the rolling pin and set it to do the initial roll out. She'd work it by hand once it was out to make sure the dough was even. "I'm well. We've been busy at the office and I've had to put my research on hold. Not that I'm complaining it's good to take a break." In fact, she had needed to after her time at Hogwarts. Sitting there with Winky just around every corner still moping had served up too many reminders of times long gone.

Dean looked at the size of the container Hermione pulled down and grinned. "Yup, that should be plenty," he said, nodding. "I mean, I can always Apparate home and grab some of mine, but it's easier if you have your own. And no, no exploding glitter. I'm not George, and glitter gets everywhere, it must be used sparingly. And I say this as someone who has exploded paint all over himself!" The paint thing wasn't a common occurrence, especially not since he actually finished his apprenticeship, but paint and paint base were annoyingly penetrating clothes-wise. "Besides," he added, "I mostly cook the muggle way, find it relaxing, but sometimes I am so thankful for spoons that'll stir for you!"

He nodded, watching her work. "Yeah, I mean mostly art doesn't have much of a deadline, but after the show I think we were all ready to just relax a little. I love my work, but shows take it out of me. So I'm with you on the taking a break."
