Hearing the doorbell, Alicia left the reception room – where Isla and Liam were already playing with the few guests who had shown up a few minutes earlier – to open the door. Seeing Adrian outside, she didn’t say or do anything but look at him with a soft smile on her lips. For all that today, the anniversary of her wedding, made her miss Daniel all the more, it made her heart swell when she realised that just seeing Adrian made her feel happy and warm inside without even a touch of guilt.
“Hi,” she said, her smile brighter as she glanced to the scooters he had brought. It would be a shame to just leave them like this, so without looking away, she pushed the door open behind. “Liam! Isla!” she called. “It’s for you!”
“Of course it is!” came Isla’s voice from inside, followed by Liam’s; “Can’t you just let them in?”
“No!” Alicia called back, smirking up at Adrian. “It’s out here, front and centre in half a minute, or I’m Adrian’ll be leaving again!”
The instant silence from inside let her know that she had succeeded, and she leaned up to brush a kiss to Adrian’s lips, though she would have loved to greet him better. “They’ll be right out.”
