Neville and Ernie
WHO: Neville and Ernie
WHEN: Wednesday December 3rd
WHERE: Longbottom's Mansion
WHAT: Neville has Ernie over for dinner.
RATING: PG
STATUS:

Cubes of lamb, potatoes carrots, onions and turnips were simmering in a glorious rosemary sauce while a loaf of home made bread was baking in the oven. Neville was quite proud of himself as he finished up dinner for himself and Ernie. Augusta has left for an evening out with her friends, probably to play cards or something, which suited him just fine.

He'd received the great news that his offer on the small house had been accepted, but he wouldn't be moving in for a while, giving the lady a while to find an other place. He had started making plans for the house and the yard and was mostly done with it.

Ernie stepped out of the floo with his nose in the air, smelling the wonderful scents of a home-cooked meal. Ernie loved to eat more than he loved to cook, and his stomach was definitely the path to his heart.

"Neville, it's me!" he called out so as not to frighten his friend. "Whatever you've got cooking, it smells delicious!"

"I'm in the kitchen!" He exclaimed, then remembered that maybe Ernie didn't know where it was so he stepped out and grinned. "Hey there, it's right over here, it's almost ready." Neville said excitedly. He was glad that Ernie thought it smelled good and hopefully it would be good.

"I've got lamb stew on the fire and bread in the oven. Thought we could indulge in a real homemade dinner. I just wish I had more time to do it."

"Mmmmmm," he moaned, following the scent into the kitchen and grinning over at his friend. "Neville, will you marry me?"

He moved over to the stove and peered into the pot, only just resisting the urge to stick his finger in to give the sauce a taste test. "I think we all wish we had more time. If I could have that time-turner Hermione had back in school, I could get so much done."

He reluctantly turned away from the food to face his friend. "So, how's the Auror Department been treating you? Have you still been thinking of other options, or are you still intent on staying?"

Neville stared at Ernie a moment before he realized that his friend was probably kidding. "Why yes, Ernie. Oh I thought you'd never ask." He said excitedly, bouncing on his feet with a large grin on his face. Then he laughed and tilted his head to the side. "We all wish we could have one, but I think that Hermione's experience has taught us all that more time would mean more work and we'd all end up insane. I don't know how she did it."

"Um.." His work was definitely not something he wanted to be talking about right now. "Well, of course I'm well treated. I do my job well, even if my triplicates sometimes don't match." He chuckled and shook his head. "But I'm respected and.." And it was so terribly important for Neville to be respected.

Ernie gave Neville a gentle, playful shove. "Be careful, I might just ask that for real one day." He did know exactly what Neville meant - there were plenty of dangers in having too much time on one's hands.

"Paperwork," Ernie groaned sympathetically. "But yeah, I can see that." He also knew that Neville hadn't quite answered Ernie's question, which was a sort of answer in itself. He decided not to push the issue, at least not right now - definitely not before he was fed, that was for sure. "At least it sounds like the department knows a good bloke when they see it."

He then ceased resisting and glanced back at the food on the stove. "So, how long till we get to dig in?"

Neville chuckled. "Gran would only be too happy. You are handsome, sweet, great education, amazing pedigree." He waggled his eyebrows, leaving aside the fact that he'd never been with a man, ever. And he wasn't too sure that he was attracted to them at all. Well, he'd never tried anyway.

"My job is really not that glorious. People are often amazed at how boring it actually is." He rolled his eyes and turned off the fire. He checked the bread and grinned. "I'd say it's ready."

Neville served the bowls and brought them to the table, then grabbed the loaf of bread.
