Payday!
Who: Lucy and Hannah
What: Shopping
Where: Leaky Cauldron / Diagon Alley
When: Friday
Rating: SFW

After a dose of pepperup potion and a good solid ten hours of sleep on Monday night, Lucy had almost entirely recovered from her sudden cold. Her throat was still a bit scratchy, but given that her sister had been in bed for a week when she'd come down with it, Lucy was more than willing to deal with that without complaint. What had been harder to deal with had been her lack of funds. Though she was careful with her money, there were some months when living in London on a small salary was just downright difficult - and what with transferring some of her spending money to galleons and sickles now that she was visiting Finnigan's regularly, it was hard to be sure exactly where the money was going. One of these days, she'd sit down and write herself a new Excel spreadsheet to track it all.

But today was not that day. Thursday had been payday, and Lucy's bank account was once again reassuringly full. It might not stay that way for long - what with Christmas coming up, but today at least she didn't have to worry. After leaving work, Lucy headed straight for the Leaky Cauldron. Despite six years at Hogwarts she'd never really gone Christmas shopping in the magical world. She still couldn't buy magical gifts for most of her friends, and wouldn't for her family, but there were former Hufflepuffs she was now reunited with who all had to be given presents and she was looking forward to seeing what was available.

She paused at the bar to tip out her 'wizarding' purse (actually a hanbag, galleons not fitting easily in a normal wallet), counting up how much she had to spend before she'd need to make another trip to Gringotts. She'd just finished when she glanced up and spotted a familiar face. "Hannah?" She grinned. "How are you?"

Hannah had wanted a more regular schedule and talking to Tom about it had landed her an offer to move from shift work to a full time managerial position. That meant that she would now have every Sunday off but would retain her every other Saturday. Her new hours from 7 am to 5 pm wouldn't officially start until after the new year though. However, in light of her weekend off Tom had asked her to come in at nine that morning so he could begin her training and had asked another of his employees to cover her shift for that night.

She had just left Tom's office near the kitchen to head toward her new office behind the inn counter when she heard her name float through the air. Turning in the direction the voice came from she tucked her hair behind her ear. "Lucy," she beamed looking down at the stack of folders in her arm. "I'd give you a hug but my arms are full. Give me a moment to put all this down in my office and I'll be right back." Yes, she could have sent it to her office magically and gone ahead and freed her arms up, but that would mean having to put it up later and Hannah rather put things where they belong the first time.

Lucy smiled as Hannah recognised her. "I wouldn't, I may still be contagious." Even thought pepperup had mostly dealt with her symptoms, that didn't mean she wanted to inflict them on Hannah. While she waited for Hannah to come back, she tucked her wallets (muggle and wizarding) back into her handbag. She thought she had enough money to be going on with, and if not Gringotts was convenient.

"I didn't mean to interrupt your work," she said, when Hannah returned. "I was actually on my way to do some Christmas shopping." She glanced at her watch, trying to judge whether she had time to stop and have a drink with Hannah. Probably not, since as far as she knew the London trend of staying open later hadn't caught on yet in Diagon Alley. She'd be lucky if she had an hour to shop in. "What time do you finish?" she asked. "I was going to go for a drink at Finnigan's when I finished, but I could come here instead."

"A chance I'd definitely be willing to take," Hannah commented to the possibility of getting sick. While she meant it Hannah knew that living with her pregnant step-mother that coming home sick wouldn't be the best of ideas. Which of course reminded her that she would have to start looking for her own place after the new year.

Shifting the folders to her other arm she took a subconscious step toward her office. "Actually, I'm wrapping up for the day. Tom's given me a promotion and rather than taking my usual shift tonight he brought me in to begin training me on my new responsibilities." Again, she shifted the folders as one of the corners was poking her uncomfortably in the breast. "I could join you if you'd like some company?" Hannah normally wouldn't have invited herself to join someone's shopping spree but the fact that Lucy had inquired about when she got off work opened the door for a possible afternoon together.

"A promotion?" Lucy asked, smiling. She didn't really have a very clear idea of what Hannah did, but a promotion was always something worth celebrating. "That's wonderful. What will you be doing?" She bit her lip and gestured to the folders. "No, tell me after you've sorted all that out, whatever it is, and then of course you can join me. We'll get a celebratory hot chocolate or something."

"A bit more responsibility and a stable shift," she elaborated. "Not just the reception girl for those coming and going."

That was a quick version of her new job, the bulk of which she was still a bit away from figuring out. She gave a nod and hurried off to put things away in her office before returning to where Lucy sat. "You mentioned hot chocolate?" Hannah beamed as she pulled her jacket on over her shoulders. The last thing she wanted to do was sit at work in order to celebrate work.
