Journal: Penny

I’m two weeks overdue on this story. Fourteen days. My editor is now sending me howlers on an almost daily basis in between hyperventilating over the fact that I might not make it to the final submission date. Not that I can blame her - I’ve never been late in any of my dates before even for those anthologies or when I was drowning in a sea of red pen edits to do.

And yet…I have the story plotted out, half of it written but when I go to actually getting it down onto parchment everything goes awry. It’s been a policy to never write about people I know - oh there might be a few people who have bits of themselves shoehorned into characters and I’m pretty sure if the bartender at Finnigans ever read my novels they might recognise myself but having my hero as a redhead?
It hits too close to home.

It should be easy. I’ve gone on some incredible dates in the past month. Richard is debonair, charming, good looking and yet.. Its not his cluster of freckles on his arm that I’m thinking about. Little flecks of cayenne that I want to examine in the half-light of evening or stars.

Fourteen days. I have to get this written and submitted by Thursday at the latest.
I’m up shit creek without a paddle.

Deadlines always seem to slip by the wayside at this time of year. Especially when the Christmas lights are switched on in town and they look so magical It makes you want to curl up beside a fire with a mug of hot chocolate and watch the world slip by.

So please, if you see me daydreaming at Finnigans this evening, I would appreciate it if you poked me and remind me that deadlines are - at times - imperative.

Don't say that too loudly, I must maintain my image of being a prat, don't you know.

The land is beautiful, but I have bad memories of visiting the tombs as would happen to anyone who's been locked inside one by their brothers. I hear Thailand is beautiful and the emissary I'd met from there years ago was quite nice and polite. I've also wanted to visit New Zealand, even though it's a world away. With all your traveling, I'm surprised you hadn't been to South America yet.

Such an erroneous judgement of character Mr Weasley. Your brothers were meant to be smart and kept missing that little fact.

New Zealand sounds incredible, as does Thailand. I meant to head to South America but life got in the way. Its rather sad that we're too old to run away from responsibilities now.

True, but there is something to be said for being underestimated - there are advantages in it.

It would be nice, however, if responsibility could come along with us. And I prefer to think of it less as running away and more expanding our horizons.
