Journal: Penny

I’m two weeks overdue on this story. Fourteen days. My editor is now sending me howlers on an almost daily basis in between hyperventilating over the fact that I might not make it to the final submission date. Not that I can blame her - I’ve never been late in any of my dates before even for those anthologies or when I was drowning in a sea of red pen edits to do.

And yet…I have the story plotted out, half of it written but when I go to actually getting it down onto parchment everything goes awry. It’s been a policy to never write about people I know - oh there might be a few people who have bits of themselves shoehorned into characters and I’m pretty sure if the bartender at Finnigans ever read my novels they might recognise myself but having my hero as a redhead?
It hits too close to home.

It should be easy. I’ve gone on some incredible dates in the past month. Richard is debonair, charming, good looking and yet.. Its not his cluster of freckles on his arm that I’m thinking about. Little flecks of cayenne that I want to examine in the half-light of evening or stars.

Fourteen days. I have to get this written and submitted by Thursday at the latest.
I’m up shit creek without a paddle.

Deadlines always seem to slip by the wayside at this time of year. Especially when the Christmas lights are switched on in town and they look so magical It makes you want to curl up beside a fire with a mug of hot chocolate and watch the world slip by.

So please, if you see me daydreaming at Finnigans this evening, I would appreciate it if you poked me and remind me that deadlines are - at times - imperative.

Hate to contradict a lady, but the clouds and rain this time of year make me want to curl up someplace tropical holding one of those fruity drinks with a little umbrella in it.

Enjoyed our evening at the theatre. Other than seasonal lassitude, how are things going?

Sand between your toes, sun on your back and the sound of the surf crashing against the land as you're king of all you survey? I'll admit that it has a certain appeal.

Especially on rainy days.

[Richard/Penny]
I enjoyed it too. Things are going - well, rather stressful actually. I've always been rather good at time management but things are starting to slip by me which is unacceptable.

You?

Sun, sand, swimming all afternoon. Dinner with sunset for a background, then dancing until dawn in some of those little tropical clubs. Repeat as necessary.

[Rich/Penny]

Ugh, sorry about the deadline stress; I know it only too well. I'm doing fairly well these days if as busy as always. At least I have a new workout partner and am getting in two good sessions a day. Keeps me from getting too fat to fly.

Anything I can do to help you out?

Now you're just being a tease. In all honesty, I'm more of a home-body; there's something infinitely appealing about curling up on the couch, fire roaring and sound of music in the background to just talk away the day.

[Rich/Penny]

Does working out help? I tried it after my release but the beach is rather handy for a morning fun.

At the moment? Regrettably no unless you have secret talents you've novel told me about. How about lunch though, with a friend once I get this paperwork monster sorted?

Not so much teasing as looking forward to how I'm going to spend my time from the day after Christmas through New Years.

[Rich/Penny]

Took on an apprentice in wizarding sword. She was already an accomplished magical duelist, so I can't even think of anything else when I'm working with her. Great way to get rid of stress.

Talents I've novel told you about? What are you up to?

I ah..Oh sweet Rowena. Umm. Nothing. I meant never, talents you've never told me about.

Well, I like to think I've got some novel talents as well.

When looks good for you for lunch? You can even bring your paperwork monster along for the occasion if its something you want me to take a look at. Become fairly adept at dealing with those things myself, surprisingly enough. Something from work?

I - you do?

Umm..this weekend? I need to have this sent off for edits by Friday at the latest unless I want to go on the run. And no, thankyou though, I don't think this is the kind of paperwork you'd be au fait with dealing with Richard.

Hmm. Something like that.

Yeah... Let's not go there. Sorry.

Flying lessons Saturday morning. Lunch around 1pm? That will give me a chance to get cleaned up. I can shower and change at the track. Anyplace you'd like to go?

I'm pretty good with secrets.

There's no race Saturday afternoon if you want to come out to the track and eat there.

I'm going for the carrot and stick approach. Think it will work?

Depends on what you're using for the carrot and what you're using for the stick!

I can send the shop owls to poke you. They could use the exercise.

However, I'd feel bad for them bugging you.

Would you? I promise not to feed them too much until they can't fly anymore.

Hmm you would? How bad?

I certainly can, so long as you won't hurt me for it! They could all use the practice anyway, keep their wings in so to speak as they wait for a home.

With permission, not nearly so bad.

Why would I hurt you? If anything, its a reminder that I should perhaps consider getting an owl of my own. I've been using the post-office ones for years since after Hogwarts. Perhaps you could consider it the first part in seeing if I'm ready for an owl.

Really? Drats. I was hoping for a tortured consciences at least.

Well, if you're seriously searching for an owl, you can owlsit any of the shop's for a bit, or even try different ones. I foster them out sometimes.

Oh, in that case, I'm over here torturing myself with guilt for bugging you. There can be wailing and gnashing of teeth if needed.

I am here for the wailing and gnashing of teeth! But I'll pop in and see about owlsitting because I'd love to help an owl find a great home.

Wail wail wail. Gnash gnash gnash! Rending the clothes a bit as well. Does that help with the angst quota?

I'll send each of the owls in a rotation for you. Make note of the ones you like best, and then come see me -- we can arrange for you to owlsit the ones you like to see what the best fit is.

What is this? Penelope Clearwater, procrastinating? Will I have to send Hermes over with reminders? Or perhaps simply a mug and chocolate to help with the procrastination?

Would you? I'd hate to be an imposition but its just so unlike me to not be on top of things that its making me rather flustered.
Care to run away together - Richard is making abroad sound rather divine.

How are you faring in your own deadline front?

All you need to do is ask and Hermes will be a constant nuissance on my behalf. Expect him shortly with some sugar quills and chocolate ladyfingers.

Running away is definitely a temptation I've had to resist at times. Though if you were to go, where would it take you? Anywhere as long as it isn't Egypt.

Rather well, thank you. Every day I learn a little something I had not known before, and I'm beginning to believe this entire ordeal is an effort on the Minister's part to ensure that I feel properly humbled by my own ignorance of all things Muggle despite having excelled at Muggle Studies.

Another reason why I adore you, Percy. You're far, far too good to me.

Hmm, no not Egypt though I have quite the postcard collection from that country! I know Greece rather well and its a stunning country but I've always been tempted to explore South America. What about you?

Don't say that too loudly, I must maintain my image of being a prat, don't you know.

The land is beautiful, but I have bad memories of visiting the tombs as would happen to anyone who's been locked inside one by their brothers. I hear Thailand is beautiful and the emissary I'd met from there years ago was quite nice and polite. I've also wanted to visit New Zealand, even though it's a world away. With all your traveling, I'm surprised you hadn't been to South America yet.

Such an erroneous judgement of character Mr Weasley. Your brothers were meant to be smart and kept missing that little fact.

New Zealand sounds incredible, as does Thailand. I meant to head to South America but life got in the way. Its rather sad that we're too old to run away from responsibilities now.

True, but there is something to be said for being underestimated - there are advantages in it.

It would be nice, however, if responsibility could come along with us. And I prefer to think of it less as running away and more expanding our horizons.
