Dominic had owled everyone the site he'd found for their somewhat haphazard Quidditch game. It was only a few minutes walk from Ottery St Catchpole, an area both rural and magical enough that Dominic didn't think they'd have to worry about being seen. He'd put up a few Muggle-Repelling Charms, just in case. The 'pitch' had been trickier, but he'd manage to transfigure some serviceable hoops at each end. The balls he'd bought, happy to discover that there were snitches available which were designed not to fly too far — exactly for this kind of situation. It might mean Richard had a relatively easy time of it, but Dominc was more worried about losing a normal snitch entirely and not knowing it, or else the risk of a wayward snitch being discovered by some muggle.

By the time everything was ready, it was twenty to three and Dominic fetched his broom from where he'd rested it against a nearby tree, thinking he'd get a few laps in to warm up before everyone started arriving.

Rich was pleased with himself, although he was careful to show nothing more on his face than a polite smile. While he hadn't gone pro after Hogwarts, the Falcons had offered him first string Seeker or Chaser. And while most of his flying these days was devoted to racing, short track techniques had kept him in practice for the pitch. But it wouldn't be gentlemanly to do more than a restrained celebration with his team mates and congratulate the other team for a match well played. So he opened his cooler and offered beers to anyone who wanted one while he packed up his collection of brooms.

The game had been exhilarating. It was the first pick up game she'd gotten to play in at least a couple of years, and even if it wasn't a full team it was a lot of fun. The broom she borrowed was very responsive, and she felt like she'd done a good job while not being so into it that she accidentally got someone hurt. Tristan had come, and it made her happy to know he was getting to watch the game.

Dora had landed and propped the broom up on one shoulder, bat in her other hand, and looked around. She was definitely windblown, wisps of hair escaping her braid to frame her face. She looked around for Tristan, wondering if he'd brought a parasol as he'd threatened to do and she'd teased him gently about. She didn't see him right off, but she wasn't concerned yet. She smiled genuinely at someone else as she wandered around. "Enjoy the game?" she asked the man. Something about him niggled at her memory, but it would come to her eventually. He had pretty eyes, though.

Although Zacharias didn't like losing, he reasoned that years in Hufflepuff had conditioned him to, generally, be accepting off losses in certain things, such as Quidditch. It wasn't a great feeling to lose a pick up game of Quidditch, but, honestly? He was secretly proud that he'd scored five goals after years without any real practise, though he kept that pride buried. No sense walking around like a preening peacock, especially since he'd scored the second least amount of goals out of all four chasers. Strictly speaking, that wasn't something to be particularly proud of, so he kept quiet about it, kept his features neutral as he knelt down and packed up his Quidditch kit in his bag, a bag charmed to hold more than it appeared to be able to.

Zacharias looked up at the question, a little surprised someone would be talking to him. After all, he wasn't exactly close to anyone who'd been there, and he hadn't even intended to really play. It was only a lack of more immediate communication to say he had no intentions of playing in the long run that had him showing up at all. He hadn't mentioned that when he arrived, of course, and he hadn't played like that were the truth, but he really hadn't had any solid intention to play. Once there, he hadn't minded playing, even if part of him had still wanted to spend the afternoon with his new books. Tonight, though. Tonight he would.

"It was fun, yeah," he said, straightening up. "How'd you enjoy it?"

"It was a lot of fun," Dora said, and she had no trouble confessing that. "It was nice to actually play again, even if the teams weren't full up. Reminds me of a few of the pick up games I organized back in school." Though then there were still too many interhouse rivalries to make it a big thing to most people.

She grinned at him a bit. She'd not had a lot of sleep, but the game and the cofdee before it definitely had her feeling more upbeat than she'd been in quite a while. "You played well," she told him truthfully. Never hurt to tell people that, and it was the truth. He'd scored several good goals. "Were you ever on a House team?"

Zacharias blushed slightly at the compliment, looking down at his bag, taking a second to lean down and make sure he had everything in there before straightening back up again, looking at the witch before him. "Yeah, I was," he replied, idly wondering if maybe she'd been sick the day he'd commentated a Quidditch match his fifth year or the day he'd reacted to Luna Lovegood's asinine commentary. He decided not to ask to find out, but he did add, "The Hufflepuff team for a couple years.

"And, thank you. You played well, too," he said, sincerity in his voice. He gave her a little smile, not at all sure what to do or say. He resisted the urge to fidget by quickly adding, "Congratulations on the win." Again, he was sincere, even if it would have been nice to win. But maybe it wasn't so bad to lose this time because there really wasn't anything at stake here, outside of his own pleasure and pride. And, despite the lose, he had had fun, and he felt good about what he had done.

Dora started racking her brain, knowing that this was probably one of those stupid holes she kept finding that she figured was the direct result of one too many Crucios and Imperios during the war. She finally found a strand of a memory, and she nodded, giving him a bright smile of triumph. "Oh, that's right!" she said. "I remember now. Sometimes it feels like that was a lifetime ago." And in some ways, for her, it really was.

She brushed some annoying flyaways back from her eyes, the small breeze blowing them around. "Thanks," she said, pleased with the praise. She'd not really held back, the only thing she'd done was make sure she'd not bashed anyone's head in directly. She knew what the result of that would be, with her history. "It was a really close game right up until the Snitch was caught." A twenty point difference, in fact, which made it a handy catch.

"I understand the feeling," he said, thinking about how his school years weren't that far behind but still felt like ages ago, something someone else had done. And yet, his brain still felt it necessary to send him dreams about Hogwarts and his time there. Not that this woman needed to know what he dreamt about. Most of the time, he didn't need to know. Or want to know. He much preferred waking up refreshed without any recollection of his dreams, but those only seemed to happen when he was very tired. Maybe tomorrow morning would be one of those times.

Zacharias nodded as he listened, not entirely liking how close the game was. If it were anything but a game meant for fun, he knew who'd be to blame for it. And it made him wonder, as it had before, what the point of chasers and keepers were if it call came down to the seekers. Were they just there to take blame, the scapegoats of the game? He wasn't sure, and he decided to keep his mouth shut on that matter.

"Close games can be a lot of fun," he said. "Stressful, too, since there's that extra push to catch the Snitch before the gap in points widens." He picked up his bag and slung it over his shoulder. "I'm Zacharias, by the way. Though you might have known that..." He wasn't sure if she did or not, but he figured it couldn't hurt to be polite and introduce himself just in case.

"They're exciting," Pandora said, grinning a bit. "Of course, I'm just a Beater, I just smack balls at people and try to make them stop what they're doing." And probably enjoyed it a bit more than she should, really, but she hadn't hurt anyone and everyone seemed to have had a good time.

"I thought you might be," she said, relieved that her niggling brain had been right. So many times her memory was juuuuust a bit off when it came to such things. "I'm Pandora. We've talked on journals some." And she'd told him what she was, so hopefully he wouldn't judge like he said he wouldn't. "It's nice to finally meet you." She held out her hand with a slightly hopeful air about her. She was always eager to meet other charms enthusiasts, especially if they ended up knowing who she really was and she could talk openly to them about things.

Zacharias took her hand in his, shaking it more confidently than he felt just then. It was one thing to idly talk to a stranger on those journals and another to meet that stranger in person, especially when that stranger was, well, famous. Or at least well known in a particular field, even if she used a false identity for it. The urge he'd had weeks ago to quit and insist she have his spot on the Committee on Experimental Charms again crept up his neck and wiggled into his brain, but he managed not to let it show or stupidly say something right there in front of her. Never let them see you sweat, right? Or at least, keep your foot out of your mouth, something he was better at than when he was younger but was still an issue for him.

"It's nice to meet you properly," he said, giving her a small smile as he let go of her hand. He then remembered her surname from the journals, the name next to her writing on her entries and comments; Montgomery. He'd just run into someone with the same surname a few hours earlier. He suspected they might be related, but even if they weren't, it was apparently a Montgomery meeting kind of day. Whatever that was. He thought better of bringing it up, partially because he thought about how stupid it sounded to say he'd just met another Montgomery and asking if she knew him. That was like asking him if he knew a random person with the surname Smith.

"Thank you, again," he said, lowering his voice to keep from being overheard, "for the copy of the journal. I enjoyed your article." And he had, though one reason he said it was because he didn't know what else to say. Small talk was not Zacharias Smith's forte.

"It's excellent to meet you as well," she said, giving him a broad grin and relaxing slightly at his welcoming sort of demeanor. The grin grew a bit at his thanks. "Wasn't a problem. I'm really very glad you enjoyed it. I worked hard on it." Especially since at the time she'd been mostly doing stuff in the dueling circuit. Most of her spare time had been going to that.

"And thank you for the hat," she said. "I wear it a lot." And she did. She thought it was very cute and nicely warm. Plus it was something someone had bothered to send her and make for her, and that happened so rarely.

"So how have you been? Work going well?" she asked.

"The hard work showed," he said, meaning it. It made him think about just how far off he was from ever being able to even consider publishing. And while he knew he didn't know very much compared to others, that some of it came with age and experience, there was a part of him that still felt entirely inadequate. Maybe there had been some kind of nepotism going on when he was offered a position on the Committee on Experimental Charms. He enjoyed the committee, and he enjoyed charms, but the feeling was still one he battled with more often than he'd like to admit. And he wouldn't admit to it, especially not right now. He kept those feelings on lock-down. No sense letting them sour an otherwise decent day and a pleasant meeting.

Zacharias wasn't entirely sure what to say in response to hearing she wore the hat a lot. Of course, his intention had been for her to wear it as it was functional. And she had said she liked it in her return owl when he'd sent it as a thank you. But it was still a strange thing for him to hear it from a practical stranger. Most people who received such things from him were people he thought of as very close friends and newborns at the women's clinic (as well as their mums). And he didn't see those recipients, though the few times he had, neither the infant nor the mother knew he'd not just sent them in but made them. "I'm glad you're enjoying it," he said, secretly glad for the subject change, even if he didn't have much he could say about work.

"Yeah, work's well. I don't mean to be short about it, though. I just can't talk about it. Not speaking is kind of in the title of Unspeakable," he explained. One day, he thought he might start making things up when people asked about work. For now, he just did what he could to not come off like an arse because he couldn't do much more than say if it were going well or not. He shifted his weight, adding, "But, I've been well. Um, thinking about how to cat proof possible Christmas decorations" Which wasn't all that exciting, but at least it was more open than just saying he'd been well, or so he reasoned. "How've you been?"

"Thanks." Dora knew she was a workaholic. This didn't bother her overly much, as she'd always had a tendency towards it, and right now as long as she kept up with everything with Rich and spent time with Tristan -- time that always pleased her -- she didn't mind working especially hard in order to keep her demons at bay. She even managed other time to socialise at times, as seen by her whatever-it-was with Chris that she had going on.

She grinned lopsidedly, not quite a smirk though her sharp featured face tended towards those whether she wanted them or not. "Oh, I know, and I would never push, as curious as I do get sometimes." Curiosity had always been one of her traits and downfalls, but she also knew what lines not to cross. "So long as it's going well, that's all that matters. Dora laughed very softly. "Good luck with that. Warding against cats seems to be something that the world has been trying to do ever since the first time a person took in a cat," she said dryly. "Or so I'm told, I've never really put much effort into it. I've never had a cat."

It just hadn't been a thing, somehow, growing up. She did think sometimes it would be nice to have a pet, but then she worried if she'd be able to take good care of it or not. After all, some days it was hard enough to remember to take proper care of herself.

"Busy?" she said. This was far from an unusual answer from her. "Between the shop and everything else, I've been busy. My cousin Tristan -- he's around here somewhere --" she craned her head, trying to spot her tall, thin bestie, "he's living with me, which is great."

"Mostly, I'm just trying to think about how to make it safe for both the decorations and the cats." Which mostly involved trying to make sure the cats didn't try to climb the tree or knock things over. Their stubby little legs weren't the best for climbing, he'd found, but they still seemed happy to try to get into things despite their stunted stature. He shrugged a little, not wanting to monopolise the conversation, especially not about his cats. He didn't want to be that wizard who talked about his cats all the time or anything else just as mental.

"Oh, are you getting lots of end of the year orders?" He suspected that was a good thing to not working in retail. "Or is it just a lot of other things going on there?" Even if he was glad not to be in any kind of retail business, he was still interested in what she had to say about it. And he was also sincere when he said, "I'm glad that's a great thing." And not just because living with someone else could be tricky but because living alone could also be tricky.

Dora tilted her head, regarding him intently. "Maybe a repelling charm on the tree, and unbreakable charms on the ornaments?" she suggested. "Orrrrr, if the repelling charm doesn't work, maybe something to make it too smooth to climb, and sticking charms on the ornaments to keep them from falling off?" She hoped, belatedly, that he wasn't offended at her suggestions.

"End of year orders, commissions, et cetera," she said, waving her hand. "Plus keeping the store stocked, in general, and assessing anything new that's acquired from estate sales and the like. Luckily I'm not the one trying to assess the other vendors we work with right now, or else I don't know when I'd sleep." Not that hse slept a lot, honestly, but even a few hours here or there were good to have. She flashed him a smile. "Thanks."

Zacharias nodded as he listened to her suggestions. They were things he'd thought about before, but he'd thought he'd likely need to modify them. The one saving grace to all of it, however, was that he didn't have a lot of Christmas decorations. Christmas was a fine enough holiday, and he put up some things here and there, but he didn't get into it the same way others did. He did have a tree, which was something, a few items he thought were nice but entirely at the mercy of nosy kittens if they managed to get up high enough to knock them over, as well as other festive items to put up. But his Christmas decoration collection could all fit into one box. Admittedly, that box had been charmed to fit it all in one box but not by that much.

"That sounds like a lot of things to keep you busy," he said of what all she had to do with the shop.It secretly made him glad he didn't work in a shop, even if he had his own hands full with various undertakings at work. "But I'd think you enjoy it, yeah? Otherwise you wouldn't do it." Especially since she also published articles on the subject. To him, that meant she had far more talent and knowledge to absolutely need to work in a shop, even with what she'd told him. Maybe the Ministry wouldn't consider hiring her, but he doubted others were as stupid. Besides, it wasn't like working in a shop paid so well. So he reasoned she couldn't entirely hate it. But, he'd been wrong a lot in his young life, and this could just be another tick mark in that column for him.

"It's not unenjoyable," she said, and shrugged. "I mean, sometimes if you get a lot of repetitive stuff, it can get boring for a bit, but it keeps me pretty sharp and it gives me a top of the line work room to work in, and some of the custom orders can get pretty amazing." If sometimes over the top. But that was what money could get you. "So I get to play with all sorts of things, keep myself sharp and worked out, and have a good work space. If I have to deal with customers sometimes, well, I guess that's a price to pay."

There was a reason Pandora wasn't put in the front of the shop often, though. In part because of her well known history, in part because when she was in a mood it just really wasn't the best idea. But she could be good at it when she wanted to be.

"Besides, it's my aunt's shop. Family is important too."
