My impression is that there is perhaps a touch of gallows' humour in the tradition? Sometimes we laugh unnecessarily at something so that it does not disturb us too much.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been ill - would you like me to ask Mum to send over some of her chicken soup? It has never failed to help me feel better when I've been under the weather.
