RP: A friendly drink
Who: Cormac & Lavender
What: Cormac wants to talk Dueling Club. Sure.
Where: Finnigan's, The Common Room
When: Wednesday night at 7pm
Status: Closed / In progress

Lavender Brown didn't seem like a flirt. Of course, back in school she had been, but everyone had grown up and changed. Mac was surprised she'd said yes to his offer of a drink and Dueling Club talk.

And yet, here he was at 5 of seven, settling into a seat at the bar at Finnigan's, waiting to see what buying her a drink (or two) might get him. He'd even closed up the shop an hour early to go upstairs and change into a relaxed t-shirt and jeans. He'd known of Lavender in school - she was younger, but in Gryffindor, and from what he'd heard she'd had her share of crushes. When he'd first seen her running the Dueling Club he'd found it hard to reconcile the memory of a silly little girl with hearts in her eyes for the Weasley with the woman so in charge and seemingly carefree.

He ordered himself a simple pint of stout and glanced - practiced, nonchalant - around the room to see if she'd arrived yet.

Perhaps a few remarks too late Lavender had realised that Cormac was flirting with her. But, from what she knew, he flirted with everyone. It was probably best that she agreed to a drink with him before he tried to use any real chat up lines on her.

She arrived at the pub in a casual dress and heels, her dark hair left to fall loose around her shoulders. Spotting Cormac, she met his eyes and raised her hand in greeting and headed over to the bar. "Evening, Mac."

"Lavender," He greeted her with a smile and a nod, standing while she took her seat.

"So, what can I get you? Seeing as this is on me," he asked, his voice rich and friendly. She looked lovely in a relaxed, summer sort of way, and he appreciated it. There was something about good looking people just knowing they don't have to do anything to dress it up. Mac appreciated it in men and women - a relaxed confidence, he supposed.

"How are things at the DMLE?" He asked conversationally after she'd ordered her drink.

Lavender hopped up onto a bar stool. She smiled and ordered herself a glass of red wine, having sampled enough of Finnigan's offerings to know which she preferred.

"Oh, it's surprisingly quiet at the moment. Which is a good thing, obviously, but they do like to line up training exercises when it gets like this. How goes the sports supplies business? Is it busy this time of year?"

Mac nodded, "All the kids heading back to school, House Team try outs coming up, and the kick off of the new pro season all at once - everyone wants the best new stuff." He took a sip of his stout, careful not to get any foam on himself.

"What kind of training could they possible put you all through? It's not like the spells you learned when you were hired have changed any, have they?" Maybe part of Mac was happy he'd never tried out for the pro league - who would want to constantly be practicing something you were already good at?

Lavender laughed. "It's not all wand work, trust me. Mostly physical stuff, really." She made a show of leaning back so that she could get a look at his arse. "I've got to keep my behind as pert as yours."

She sipped her drink. "They like to make sure we still know how to get out of dangerous situations." Lavender smirked. "Just in case we've forgotten."

Cormac quirked his eyebrow when she looked as his behind. "It is a fine specimen, isn't it? And to think, I just train myself to get it this way, no Aurors or bosses telling me when to run or where." Mac knew he looked good and made sure he stayed that way with a daily morning run and weights routine.

Laughing he replied, "I don't really know that you could forget things like that," he looked her up and down obviously, "and I'd say you're doing just fine with the physical work. You look fantastic." He took a longer drink of his stout this time, appreciating the view she was giving him just by sitting as close as the stools were situated.

"Mm. Clearly a lot of work put in there. Very easy on the eye." She laughed, twisting around to rest one arm on the bar as she looked at him. "I hate running," she said, wrinkling her nose. It helped keep her in shape, but if she was going to work up a sweat there were surely more enjoyable ways to do that.

She blushed a little. "Flirt. But... thank you. I try."

"Running can be fun, if you're chasing something worth it," He answered. When she blushed he reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, "You look even lovelier when you blush, and it would only be gratuitous flirting if it weren't the truth. I'm simply... Observing."

After another drink he added, "Which isn't to say I'm not flirting with you, of course," and smiled brightly at her.

Lavender scoffed lightly, not entirely sure what to make about his chasing comment.

She pouted just a little as he touched her hair. A familiar streak of fear raced through her for an instant: sitting that close he'd have to be blind not to notice the scars on her throat. Yet he still said she looked lovely. The two things clashed in her mind before she forcibly dismissed the feeling, biting her lip.

"Well, I suppose I don't mind those observations..." she said innocently. "Feel free to throw in a few more of those over the course of the evening." Lavender grinned. "I might even discovered you're not just an arse," she teased.

His grin was impressed as he pulled back his hand fully and took a long pull of his pint. "I promise I'm more than an arse - I even have a pretty face," he countered.

"And now that I'm glad to hear this is an evening rather than just a drink, you can be sure there will be many more compliments coming your way, though I'd say I wouldn't mind a private word with anyone who's falling down on the job of giving you more compliments than you can stand." He finished his drink and waved for another, "Another glass of wine?" He asked her.

He seemed to be an optimist, that much was certain. Lavender quite liked that.

She waved off his offer of another glass of wine. "No, I'm fine for the moment." Lavender still had half a glass left to drink. "So you wanted to talk about shield charms?" She smiled. "I'll see what dazzling insights I can provide."

"All business, Miss Brown." He shook his head with a smile. "I was just thinking that if in-the-moment intent - emotion, magical strength, all of that - is what changes the strength of our shield charms, maybe there's a way we can affect that on purpose?" It wasn't a fully-formed thought yet but he found it interesting.

"So Miss Brown," he liked calling her that, "What do you do when you're not saving the world and training us all to do the same?"

"Probably," Lavender mused, her fingers playing delicately with the stem of her wineglass. "I mean, a softer shield might absorb a spell, but a harder one might bounce it back to the caster. But I think you need to get the balance between concentrating on the shield and thinking to the next spell you're going to cast." She smiled and sipped her wine.

Laughing, Lavender rolled her eyes. "Hmm. I like baking. Shopping. I don't mind a bit of Quidditch, either. Usual sort of stuff."

Mac could see the wheels turning in her head as she thought of his idea. She had delicate fingers and part of him couldn't imagine was she was capable of with them, so e watched her play with her wine glass instead.

When she mentioned Quidditch he of course asked which was her favorite team, but it was the baking that surprised him. "I wouldn't have cast you as the kitchen type," he admitted.

"The Prides. Ever since I was little."

Lavender smirked a little, not missing the look of surprise on his face. "Do I not seem like the domesticated type?" she teased. "I happen to know my way around a kitchen quite well. Besides, baking's fun, especially when you get the share the end results with other people."

Mac lit up, "Me, too, can you believe Spinnet went to work for them? I've wanted to ask her for match tickets for ages but can't say she and I got along very well in school - I never really ran with the House team despite supporting them and trying out," he didn't like admitting it, but it was the truth.

"And you, no, you do not. You seem the sort who'd keep someone else in line, not the other way around. Though I don't doubt your prowess, and I'd love to be considered next time you have sweets to share." He licked his top lip, not lecherously, but just bordering it.

"Then we both have great taste," Lavender said with a grin. "Mm." She nodded. "Yeah, I know. Can't say I've ever thought to try asking for tickets. But I suppose I don't really get the opportunity to go to many matches."

Laughing, Lavender leaned towards him a little bit. "Then maybe I'll have to keep you in mind next time I make something sweet."

"Why not? Do they have you on call everyday?" He thought more, and then added, "How about this? I'll bite the bullet and ask Spinnet for tickets to a match, and you'll actually get a day off."

His eyebrows raised he said, "And all you have to do is give me something sweet."

"No, not every day, but watching Quidditch doesn't usually get to the top of my list of priorities on my days off. Which is a pity." She bit her lip. It was a tempting offer, actually. Part of her wanted to see if he'd actually be able to get the tickets, while the other part wondered what a day out with Cormac McLaggen might be like.

"Deal. Just... tell me what sort of sweet things you like."

Cormac nearly groaned at her answer - he could think of dozens of sweet things that he liked that she had. Not one to shy away from an even vague invitation, though, he answered, "Your lips look quite sweet, actually," and he shorted the space between them by to about a centimeter, keeping his eyes on her gaze.

Lavender gasped softly, very aware of his closeness. She could smell the scent of his skin and feel a warmth that had very little to do with the wine she'd drunk.

"Well, you're not backwards in coming forwards, are you?" she murmured, the edges of her lips turned up in a small smile. It only took her a second to make a decision, eyes shutting as she closed that gap between them and pressed her lips to his.

When he didn't see but felt her lips quirk up in the smallest of smiles, he knew she'd decided and when her small, full lips came against his his smile grew as well for just a moment. Then he was kissing her and a hand came to rest at her chin, cupping her face and giving his fingers a chance to tangle in her hair lightly.

Pulling back he searched her face with a smile, "I quite like talking charms work," he joked.

As she kissed him back, her hand came to rest on his knee to stop herself from leaning too far forward. In truth, she was a little disappointed when he pulled back. Kissing was an excellent pastime, after all, one she didn't indulge in nearly as much as she would like.

"It has its moments," she teased with a playful wrinkle of her nose. "You're very... insightful."

"Insightful, you say?" He leaned into her again, less hesitant and his hand came to rest on top of hers on his knee. His other hand resumed playing with her hair and he kissed her again, his tongue darting out just slightly - they were at the bar after all - to lick at her bottom lip.

He made a humming noise in his throat, "I knew your lips were sweet," he said against her mouth before resuming the kiss.

"Mm hm." Lavender managed a slight nod before Mac kissed her again. The feel of his fingers toying gently with her hair was strangely comforting, a pleasant contrast to the thrill of his warm lips on hers.

She chuckled softly in the back of her throat, this time tracing her tongue along his lip in return. "Not bad yourself," she murmured.

"Oh, I can be very sweet," he murmured. His face coming up just an inch or so he added, "Spicy though, I can also be spicy. And salty. And really anything else you like," he laughed.

He leaned down and kissed her lightly, playfully on her collar bone.

"Come now," he said, straightening up and taking a drink of his beer, "another glass of wine for the lady."

It was hard to keep a straight face when he was saying things like that. "Yeah?" she asked, giving up on suppressing her smile. "I like a bit of spice."

Her breath caught as he kissed her collarbone and her mind raced with a dozen apologies for the scars that were so close to his mouth before she sharply reminded herself that she had nothing to apologise for, bringing herself back into the moment. He looked just a little flushed, which she couldn't help but like.

"Yes," she agreed. "Another glass of wine." She reached up to removed a smudge of her lipstick from the edge of his mouth. "And maybe we can find a table somewhere a little quieter?"

Cormac smiled when her fingers touched his face, even if they were taking evidence of her kiss off of him. "Somewhere quieter it is, then? Do you prefer the Corner? Or perhaps my rooftop?" Lavender didn't seem the sort you just sort of... made a pass at. She was a bit too dangerous for that - Mac had avoided women in Law Enforcement for that reason exactly - but was gorgeous and seemed to be in a playful mood tonight.

Lavender withdrew her hand, enjoying the sight of his rather attractive smile. "Well, that's very forward," she teased; flirting with Mac seemed like a different sort of sparring than she usually did.

"Then again, it's not every day that I get invited to someone's rooftop." She was having too much fun to want to stop now and, thinking about it, even moving over to the Corner opened her up to potential teasing from Seamus. Hmm. "Okay. If that's a genuine offer, let's go before I change my mind."

Mac gave her a surprised look, his eyebrows moving up genuinely into his hairline and then he nodded. "A genuine offer, I promise. I have a pretty extensive collection at home, of wine, and rarely anyone to enjoy it with." He put down coins for their drinks and stood, "Shall we then?" He asked, his hand indicating a path through the bar. They could walk to his place easily enough, and the night was warm, and he felt like maybe it was going to get even warmer.
