Who: Cormac & OPEN
What: Cormac's stocking the shelves in his shop.
Where: MMS
When: 6pm or so
Rating: Potential language from Cormac

"Just counting things and humming to myself." Cormac said in a low, sing song voice to himself. He was literally counting charmed golf balls. With a big exhale he gave up and moved on to putting out new beginning Gobstones sets.

Then on to Exploding Snap and the Magical Measurers. Giving himself a break, he set to spelling the windows clean and then helped a young customer pick out a new set of spelled roller skates. The young boy's mother seemed to be the worrisome type, so Mac gave her a charming smile and reassured her that once he was wearing the skates, he'd be enveloped in cushioning charms. They needed to be updated once a month, but Mac charged a really small fee for it and she just needed to bring the skates in. She gave him a grateful smile and ushered her son out.

Setting back to the windows, Cormac looked up when the door opened again and gave a smile.

Wayne knew that, if the hearing didn't go well, he'd barely ever get to see Rhys, which meant his exposure to the Magical world would be limited.

He also knew that if it did go well, Rhys's rough-and-tumble attitude could get him seriously hurt at any altitude.

But he also really wanted to give him a broom for his eighth birthday, too.

Wayne had missed a shift at McDonald's, but had managed to pick up some extra work on his side job - mostly weights-and-measures stuff - and had the cash to go for it.

"Hello?" It hadn't meant to be a question, but he wasn't sure how to introduce himself to a barely-remembered sort-of-classmate from eons ago.

"I had some questions about broomsticks?"

Mac nodded, "Hello," he greeted in return. He vaguely recognized the young man standing in front of him, but not quite. He put his wand away and extended a hand, "Cormac MacLaggen, and you came to the right place." He indicated the section in the back with the actual stock of brooms (as opposed to the ones in the windows).

"What sort are you looking for?"

"Wayne Hopkins, thanks," he replied, smiling and shaking the man's hand - Cormac MacLaggen, whose name sounded familiar.

"Um, what sorts of brooms would you recommend for a beginner? Say, maybe, eight years old? I know there are little kid kinds that limit altitude, but if I got him a normal broom his mum would fucking kill me, so."

Looking at the wall of brooms and the displays in the windows, Wayne realized exactly how out of his depth he was. He'd only ever used the school brooms.

Cormac laughed, "Yeah, toy brooms, for wizarding kids who are integrated into society but too young for Hogwarts or wherever else. So, they can't really have a real broom yet without lessons, but they're fun. They have them for ages one year through nine years, so one might be just right for him."

He went straight to the toy broom section and picked up a slightly larger model toy by Ellerby & Spudmore. "This company also makes the Swiftstick, which isn't a very powerful broom, but E&S are good at their niche. Do you think his mum would be more worried about speed or height?"

"Erm..." Wayne hedged. "I think she'd specifically be worried about it being a flying broom with her son on it, so, really...all of it." He'd been hoping to get Rhys a real broom, but maybe he was just getting ahead of himself.

"Through nine years, you say? So, what are the chances that he'll whine about getting a baby broom? Although...wait..." Wayne weighed his thoughts for a moment.

"Is there a toy broom that doesn't really seem like a toy?"

Cormac couldn't help the loud laugh that popped out at Wayne's comment. "Of course," he said, trying to recover, and when the man asked about a toy broom that didn't seem like a toy broom a lightbulb went off (figuratively of course) over his blond curls.

"I think I might have just what you need," he thought to himself for a moment, his bottom lip sucked in just a bit between his teeth. It was older batch, the company that had made them had said there wasn't enough of a market between 9 years old and 'real' brooms to justify the line, but Cormac had been crazy about this particular type when he was kid. His Aunt Deirdre (his Dad Gill's older sister - much older, like Uncle Tiberius) had gotten the family together for his 20th birthday and found as many of the old ones as they could. He had a collection of 13 in his flat and had, since opening the shop, put together a nice little collection of 8 to sell to the right clients as well. These ones were unused, with annual maintenance guarantees that Cormac performed himself. They were exquisite.

He looked at Wayne - seemed to be a good man, obviously wanted to do something special for his son - and decided. Nodding, he said, "Yeah, right this way, hope you don't mind heading to the basement?" He started to lead the way thinking of the display case and charms he had in the basement just for these 8 brooms. They were larger than a 'toy' broom but smaller than the usual Firstie broom, lighter to carry but a little slower to the touch to make for smooth and slightly sluggish handling (so as not to be a safety hazard to the children, well, too much of one, anyway). They were made of real broom materials with the exception of the outer polish and the building process was different to 'real' brooms as well. But they looked and felt like any adult broom and Cormac was beaming when he reached the case.
