Justin and Wayne: getting close again
WHO: Justin and Wayne
WHEN: Monday evening
WHERE: Justin's flat.
WHAT: Justin and Wayne are slowly reconnecting.
RATING: PG?
STATUS: Ongoing

Justin stretched out on the couch, groaning. The evening at work had been really slow and their supervisor had offered for one of them to go home after 6pm. After a little chat with his colleague, it was decided that he'd be the one taking his leave for the evening. He loved his job and his colleagues appreciated that he'd offer to let her go back home to her husband, she needed the money and Justin didn't really.

"I've still got a lot of snacks." He said to Wayne as he walked over to the couch. He had offered Wayne to come over for movies and food. "So how's Rhys doing?" He asked with a smile.

"Um, he's good," Wayne responded, not quite sure how to say I haven't seen him since the fifth. Now that he'd told Justin and Ernie about his son, he wondered...have we reached the point where people talk to/about him more than me? Like when people know their neighbours' dogs better than their neighbour?

"I brought some fries from work - they're still hot," he told Justin, handing him a slightly greasy but warm paper bag full of fries. "How'd you manage to get the evening off? I thought you had, like, the worst shifts known to man or beast."

Justin laughed and took the bag. "This is awesome. I love fries." He said with a grin. "Well, no I don't have the worst shifts, not anymore." Justin was quite proud of his promotion and it felt funny to him to have such a lucky night tonight.

"I got a promotion this last weekend, actually. Regular shifts from Sunday night to Thursday night, from 4pm to midnight." He took a few fries and ate them. "Quite happy about it. I have leverage too, should I need a weeknight off I can offer to switch a weekend evening." he sighed and ate a other fries. "Tonight it was too slow and my colleague needed the hours so I came home and owled you."

He grinned at Wayne. "It'll be a better evening than dealing with sick people tonight." he said, winking at his friend.

"Speaking of which, want some jammies? I'd rather be comfortable and maybe you'd like out of those jeans too." He was used to be in pajamas around friends, especially with Ernie and lending Wayne some wasn't a problem at all.

"Hey, that's great," Wayne replied enthusiastically, genuinely happy. Regular shifts weren't something to be taken for granted - he certainly was grateful for his.

"Oh, so you're trying to get into my trousers, eh? I see how it is." Wayne was joking, of course - good jokes didn't set themselves up like that without him to execute them.

"But sure. If you'd think they'd fit. We're sorta built differently."

Justin chuckled and blushed slightly. "You have a problem with that?" Teasing, that he could do. It sort of felt familiar doing it again with Wayne even though he was now a professional with Ernie. Somehow sexy-teasing, as he liked to call it, wasn't something he did with just anyone and it had been such a long time since he'd been around Wayne like that..

He made a 'pft' sound and left the living room, quickly changing into his grey shirt and grey and blue bottoms then bringing a dark red one for Wayne. "I can spell them however you need them, Sweetie." He said, grinning as he teased Wayne a little more.

"Thanks, honeybunch," Wayne replied, sticking out his tongue ungraciously and making toward the bathroom to change. Not that he was particularly self-conscious, but he didn't want to rattle Justin.

At least Stacey had been able to cover up his awful cover up job with a nice tattoo of a badger, posed just the way it was in the Hufflepuff crest.

Justin still hadn't seen his red dragon, though. At least, not that Wayne could recall.

"Do you think they'll keep making Pirates of the Caribbean movies until the end of time?" he asked, shouting from the bathroom as he changed into the pajama bottoms from his jean.

"I think so. It'll end up like Star Trek and have a bunch of spin-offs and such." He said with a sigh. He liked the first one well enough. "Sometimes its best to keep it good and stop it there rather than destroy a franchise. Look what they did with Star Wars." He scoffed and ate more fries.

"What do you want to watch tonight?" He asked, opening a soda for himself.

"Um...speaking of movies that were ruined by its sequels..." Wayne continued, opening the bathroom door and padding out in bare feet, the borrowed pajama pants, and the t-shirt he'd been wearing.

"...do you have The Matrix? I swear, that movie was so good by itself. I just refuse to acknowledge its sequel. You know they're making a third one? Thanks again," he told Justin as he balled up his jeans and threw the wad of denim in the direction of the front door.

Putting on his best English accent, Wayne asked Justin, "How do I look?"

Justin giggled at Wayne's accent and he nodded energetically. "Actually they suit you better." The answered brightly and it was true. The color and the cut was definitely fitting him better.

"I've got it, right over there.." He nodded towards the tower it was in. "I'll get it, no worries." Before he stood though, Wayne walked past him to sit and Justin's blinked. "Wait-wait-wait!" He said excitedly, reaching out to lift Wayne's shirt a little.

"Oh my goodness." He had seen the badger already, but that.. that he hadn't seen at all.

Wayne grinned at the chance to show Justin his other tattoo, the one on his right hip. He lifted his shirt and shrugged the pajama bottoms down a tiny bit, so Justin could see the whole thing.

"Great, right?" he asked. "This bloke down in Cardiff. I dunno how he keeps his inks so bright, but for something totally muggle, it's nearly magical. Stacey did this one." He held out his left forearm to show Justin the badger. "Down Monument Alley? She did a great job over what was a truly shitty coverup."

Justin was a touchy-feely kind of blokes when it came to new, shiny stuff and this was no exception even though the tattoo was actually on Wayne's skin. "This is so hot." He said, unable to help himself as he ran his fingertips over the dragon very lightly.

"Wow, this is pretty amazing." He added as he looked over to the badger. He had been considering a tattoo for a while and had, so far, chickened out way too many times to count. "I keep telling myself that I should get one." He said softly as he left go of Wayne. He bit his lower lip and blushed as he realized that he had basically been trailing his fingers all over Wayne's skin when they barely knew each other.

Well ok, the whole reconnecting thing was doing well and it sometimes felt as if they were back in time when in fact, their lives had changed so much over the years though.

"What do you want to get?" Wayne asked, genuinely interested. At Justin's touch, Wayne's skin turned to gooseflesh, without Wayne's permission. The last time anyone had touched him had been...well...

Dora didn't count. So, Dennis then.

"And," he added, waggling his eyebrows, "where?" He didn't address the fact that Justin had said his tattoo was hot, and stored it away in his brain for later. "Let me guess. A quote-unquote tribal bumper sticker? Please god say no."

Justin shook his head and left the couch a moment to open a drawer in the living room and bringing a piece of paper back to Wayne. "It will seem cheesy and ridiculous." he said softly before handing over the small parchment with a few black birds drawn on it.

"I just need to gather the courage to do this." He said, blushing a little because he didn't like to admit that he was scared of something. "And the place is kinda cheesy too." He figured he might as well tell Wayne. "I was thinking of.." He showed his inner forearm to Wayne and trailing his fingers over the spot. It wasn't right in the inner forearm, but more on the side that he was showing Wayne, near his wrist.

"I don't think it's cheesy," Wayne told Justin softly, tracing his fingertips on Justin's arm, where he'd said he wanted the birds. "Not just because I'm biased or anything," he continued, referencing his own tattoo. "The inner forearm is one of the most sensitive parts of the body. It can feel things more deeply than, say, triceps or shoulderblades." Not that he was going to admit it, but the forearm tattoo, the initial one and then its first botched coverup, hurt way more than the dragon.

Which was stupidly appropriate.

"Well, don't force yourself. Just trust yourself enough to know that you want it." That was the only bit of tattoo advice Wayne felt himself qualified to give, really.

"Or you could get a sparrow, like Captain Jack."

Justin's eyes fixed Wayne's fingers and he caught his lower lip between his teeth. "I need the reminder.." He whispered. He had originally considered the shoulderblade first, but he'd need a mirror to look at it. He wanted to be able to see it and be reminded of the meaning.

"Sometimes I just need to remember that I'm free, you know." Justin added casually. It was the kind of comment that he usually made with his very close friends lik.e Ernie or Susan. Hannah even. Or Seamus. But rarely, he had talked about it to someone who wasn't aware of what he had gone through.

"I'm sure I want it and I know it won't.. It'll mean the same thing to me in 5 or 50 years."

Oh.

Right.

Wayne felt like such a tit.

He realized, now, that this was the closest they'd come to talking about the war, and what happened.

Of course Justin had been in prison. No, worse - Azkaban. And Wayne had forgotten. Wow, he was a shit friend.

"You should get it," he told Justin. "You know our old classmate Stacey, she's got her shop in Monument Alley. She could make it magical."

Justin nodded, looking sadly at Wayne. He knew they hadn't talked about it at all since they had seen each other again. "I know Stacey." He told Wayne, nodding. He felt bad about blindsiding Wayne about Azkaban, but he was used to be able to mention it now. He still didn't like to talk about the details of it, but telling Wayne he had been there just seemed right.

"Maybe I'll ask for her advice about it." His eyes lit up with excitement. "Maybe I'll get a much bigger one on my side here." He said showing the spot between his ribs and his hip.

Wayne's eyes widened where Justin indicated he'd get the bigger tattoo - a nice stretch of skin on his hip, not unlike where Wayne's dragon was.

"That'd be good," he said simply, brain having shorted out and refusing to supply any other words.

"Yeah. Good."

Get it together, Wayne. This is your mate.

"What if you got a great big badger across your chest?" he joked. "No one would mess with you then. They wouldn't even start. They'd be all like, 'you wanna go, mate?' and you'd take off your shirt and BAM they'd go flying."

Justin laughed, his head slightly thrown back. It was as genuine as it got these days and eventually it died down. "Oh yeah, well, I'll keep the badger for somewhere else, I think. I don't know. Your badger looks really bad ass." He reached out to take Wayne's arm again, his fingers trailing on the tattoo.

"It looks really good, but I'm not sure it's my kind of tattoo thought. Or maybe I could just get the House colors in an other form?" Or maybe he could just knit himself a nice hat instead of something so permanent.

"Well," Wayne reasoned, "the downside of getting Hufflepuff-colored anything is that it might wind up looking like a bumblebee. That being said, it also matches St David's Flag, so there's that."

Wayne had a full-size St David's flag hanging up in his flat, almost entirely covering one wall, like a tapestry.

"I think whatever you get, whatever you get, it'll look great." Wayne just stopped himself from saying spectacular.

Wayne didn't want, and wanted, Justin to touch him again.

Maybe safer, then, to not.

"Do you have Jurassic Park? Speaking of great movies with shit sequels, I mean."

Justin giggled. "Yeah, right, I see what you mean." He said, nodding. "Unless I have like.. a crest? It'll look like the Hufflepuff crest, so I could just not have the Hufflepuff colors on me, because I don't think I'm brave enough for sure an intricate tattoo." He nodded towards Wayne's badger tattoo as he said that. Clearly he was afraid of the pain.

"Yeah, I definitely have Jurassic Park and I have the Matrix.. Which one you want? We could do both." He didn't mind staying up late, he actually liked the idea of having someone with him for the longest possible. He hated being alone.

"How about both?" Wayne asked, already planning on how he would call in sick for work the next day. It'd been months since he'd taken a sick day, and even longer since he'd actually been sick for a sick day.

"And honestly, if it's about the pain, it's not really..." Wayne waffled, not sure he needed to maintain the machismo front.

"Actually it hurts like a bitch," he admitted. "Bigger ones usually take more than one session. This one," he indicated the badger, "is actually three over the same skin. The original, then the shit coverup, then this badass badger that Stacey did. But...it sorta feels good? Like you're earning it? And..." He flopped down on the sofa, stretching out his legs in front of him.

"Not gonna lie and say a shot of whiskey doesn't help."

"Both it is." He said, standing up to put on The Matrix first. "Well you did say it's very sensitive area so it kind of makes sense that it would hurt." He looked at the table and cocked his head to the side.

"I'll get the snacks." He said, finally remembering about the food. He brought over a bag of crisps, candy and sodas. He didn't have any alcohol this time though, as he preferred not to drink during the weekdays and the last time he drank, he very nearly snogged Wayne.

He sat beside Wayne and looked at him. "I'm hoping for something small that won't hurt much." He said with a chuckle.

Wayne nodded, understanding what Justin meant about the tattoo. Wayne had liked the pain of the tattoo, because he felt like he was earning it.

Justin had earned his already, in Azkaban.

"What snacks have you got? Are we still keeping up the illusion of saving candy for trick-or-treaters, or is it all fair game? And what have you got to drink?" Please, oh, please, let there not be beer. He wasn't sure he could say no, just yet.

Justin laughed softly. "Nope, I stopped trying to keep it for Halloween. I'll just buy more when it's the time." He said with a grin. "I've got sodas and iced tea." He offered. "I don't usually have anything alcoholic in the house during the week." He blushed a little , wondering if Wayne would mind. Everytime they had seen each other they had had a drink or two and Justin wasn't sure he should be drinking.

"Nah, that's cool," Wayne replied. He then cleared his throat - a nervous tic.

"I'm, ah, back on the wagon. So to speak." Wayne's own commitment to sobriety was lukewarm at best, but now with Dora, he had something close to a sponsor.

"So...yeah, what happened last time, with the drinking...I can't let that happen again, yeah?" He looked to Justin, hope in his eyes saying:

Please. I need your backup on this.

A thought occurred to him, and Wayne shifted to dig around in his pockets, triumphantly extracting a silver 24-hour chip.

"One day at a time, right? Zillionth verse, same as the first?" He handed the chip to Justin for inspection.

Justin tilted his head to the side a little and reached out to place his hand on Wayne's arm in a comforting gesture. It was probably the hardest thing Wayne would have to face.

"I'm right here if you need me, Wayne." He said softly. Getting cleaned was something hard that required such commitment and Justin was proud of his friend. "And I'm glad you told me." He was honored that Wayne trusted him enough to tell him about it.

"One day at a time." He agreed, nodding as he took the chip. "I'm proud of you, you know."

"Thanks?" Wayne replied, ruffling his own hair - another nervous tic. He was so obvious, sometimes.

"I, uh, yeah." He wasn't sure he deserved pride - after all, he had quit drinking three times and gotten smashed three times since moving to London. Zillionth time's the charm?

"Can we just watch Jurassic Park now? I'm feeling self-conscious."

Justin looked over at Wayne who didn't seem comfortable at all, but since he was his friend, he felt it was his duty to make sure that Wayne knew he had his back. "Does it have anything to do with-" He cleared his throat and his face flushed, realizing at the last second that it might cause a fight. What if Wayne didn't want to talk about it?

"To do with what?" Wayne wasn't trying to be confrontational; he was genuinely curious.

"The other night when I drank nearly all of the beer? Sorry about that, by the way. I'll try not to let that happen again. I, ah." He cleared his throat.

"I sorta met someone in the same boat as me. So we're gonna...I dunno. It's just nice to have someone I don't need to explain anything to. But yeah. Like I said. I think I can make it stick this time."

Justin looked at Wayne and felt terrible instantly, recalling every conversation he'd had with him. Had been been judgmental towards his friend? "I want to help you." He said softly. "But I don't know how or what to do to help."

"No, it's okay," Wayne insisted. Justin could try to do anything in the universe, and it wouldn't be what he needed for this.

What he needed was what he had: a person who knew what it was like to be an addict. Another person with an addiction who wanted to stop. Or, at least, was willing to help him try.

"You are helping. Just by being you."

Justin nodded sadly. "Just remember that I'm here okay? Even if.." He shifted on the couch and bit his lower lip. "Even if it's in the middle of the night or anything." he reached out for Wayne's hand and squeezed it before taking it to his lips to give it a quick kiss, much the same way he'd do with any other friend before he grabbed the remote and started the movie.

Wayne had expected the openness Justin was giving him about calling on him whenever Wayne needed to. And it was nice, it really was.

He wasn't prepared for how soft Justin's lips felt.

But...well. Justin's Seamus. Plus Wayne's burgeoning sobriety. Not a good mix.
