Under The Sea
Who: Bryn and Lucy
What: Trip to see the mermaid castle
Where: The Mediterranean
When: Saturday
Rating: SFW?

After their tour of the mermaid colony, Bryn and Lucy had separated to get dried and dressed for their dinner on the beach. Lucy, perhaps unlike most women, actually felt less comfortable in the summer dress she'd borrowed than she had in her bikini. Unable to find a hairdryer in the magical community built around the colony, she'd pulled her hair back and let the mostly-dry tendrils at the front curl around her face.

It had obviously taken her longer to get ready than Bryn, because by the time she made it to the table he was already there. Lucy smiled at him, feeling a slight flutter of butterflies. They hadn't really had much chance to talk on their underwater tour, so this was their first opportunity to actually get to know each other. "Hey," she said as she sat down. "This is amazing." The sun was just beginning to set, and there were already candles on the table. "This whole day has been amazing, really." She'd been right to say she'd won the best date, she doubted anything else could have compared.

"It was so easy to get lost in that castle, wasn't it?" A few times during first year, Bryn had tried to make a game of it, usually until Ben and Cedric inevitably found him.

Bryn sipped his water. "Sort of. Mam's Muggleborn and when my parents got married and had my older brother, it was the height of the war, so she decided that the family was gonna live as Muggles. We stayed that way until I went off to Hogwarts. How about you?"

"The moving staircases didn't help," Lucy agreed. She'd been lucky enough never to get stuck in one, but she'd seen it happen a few times. Mostly, she'd just had the nerve to jump when she noticed the staircase start to move. "It was a lot to get used to, but Sprout helped with that too."

Lucy nodded, thinking that Bryn's mum's situation didn't sound so different from her own - except that she hadn't had children to worry about, and somehow that made it easier to talk about. "No one in my family is magical, except me. During the war, when they said I couldn't go back, I just... made a life for myself in the muggle world. It was easier, in a lot of ways, but I guess I'm trying the magical thing again now." She shrugged, hoping he wouldn't find that too strange.

Bryn listened carefully, nodding as he took it in. By the time the war had come about, both he and his brother had finished their schooling and his family had integrated themselves back into the wizarding world. Even Bryn's childhood friends had moved on in their lives, heading off to university or into jobs. To them, he was just that slightly weird old friend who'd gone off to boarding school. There hadn't been anything for him to disappear into.

"Makes sense. How's it going for you so far?"

Lucy pursed her lips to one side. "It's weird," she admitted. "I've still got friends here, though I hadn't seen them for years, and they're welcoming me back like I was never away." She smiled at that, tipping her head slightly to one side. "Hufflepuff, right? But in... all the other ways, I guess I don't know where my place is. I have a muggle job, I go to a muggle doctor, I still shop in Angel rather than Diagon Alley." It occurred to Lucy that this was rather heavy conversation for a first date - fortunately she was saved from continuing by the waitress arriving with their food.

Once the waitress had rearranged things on their table to make room for plates and glasses and cutlery, Lucy attempted to turn to topic of the conversation in a more casual direction. "So, I know you work at Finnigan's - but what do you do when you're not working or putting yourself up for charity raffles?"

"When I'm not working at Finnigan's, I also work at Sweet Nothings. Have you been in there? It's the patisserie on Monument Alley. I like to keep busy. And I play guitar. Even do open mic night sometimes." He moved his glass of water to the side as the waitress proceeded to pour their wine. "I think that's me in a nutshell. Don't like to keep idle."

He looked at his food, suddenly ravenous. "Well, this looks lush." Bryn smiled and lifted his wine glass, angling it towards Lucy. "Cheers. Or, as we say in Wales, iechyd da."

"How very Hufflepuff..." Lucy said, smiling, then shaking her head. "No, I know what you mean. I've only got the one job, but I'm notorious for staying late during the week, or for taking work home." Her colleagues were always telling her she should be out, living her life - what wither her being so much younger than them. Honestly, Lucy did have a good social life, she just kept it mostly to weekends.

She lifted her glass to meet Bryn's. "I won't embarrass myself by trying to repeat that. Cheers."
