A Shark's Tale - Winner's date
Who: Dean Thomas and Luna Lovegood

What: Cinema and coffee

Where: Leicester Square

When: Sat 18th October, afernoon

Rating: SFW

Since they had decided to watch a children's film there weren't any particularly late showings of A Shark's Tale so they'd decided on Saturday afternoon. It would probably mean a fair few families, but at least in the cinema itself they would have seats with enclosed backs which always helped Dean.

They'd decided to meet at Leicester Square at the central fountain just for ease as Dean wasn't sure where he'd be coming from and Luna didn't need him turning up at her house only to have to turn around and head right back for London again. As it turned out he was coming from home, having taken the weekend off after giving up all of the completed work he wanted to be considered for the show publicity the previous day. That had lead to him spending Saturday morning cooking so he'd have some food for the coming weeks and by the time he had to leave to the city centre (via the Tube because it was easier than finding a quiet apparition spot on a Saturday and he knew it well enough that he could take a quieter line most of the way) he had several dishes cooling ready to be frozen.

When he arrived he managed to find an open spot at the fountain, mostly thanks to the slightly gloomy weather, and perched himself to wait for Luna, ever aware of his exposed back and glancing around often.

Once Luna had gotten her father situated for the day, she made sure that she had everything necessary to meet Dean at the cinema. Her father was playing some card game with a friend, which left her nearly the whole day free. It was kind of nice to have someone else watch after him for a little while. Truth be told, she hadn't been out of the house for weeks. Well except for going to work and all. This would be nice.

She had apparated somewhere safe and then walked the rest of the way, since she felt the same way about trying to find a safe and quiet spot where people were watching. Hopefully he hadn't been waiting for her too long. Sometimes she lost track of time when she was walking and started looking at things in shops. It was easy for her to get distracted by things, but Dean knew that by now. Still she didn't want to be so late that she missed the movie, so she didn't dawdle too much.

Spotting Dean by the fountain, she approached from the front with a wave and wandered over. "Hi Dean. How are you? I'm not late, am I?"

Dead straightened as he spotted Luna approaching, waving to her with a smile. "Hey, Luna," he said "I'm well thank you, how are you? And no, you're not late. Plus we have three different options anyway, so we could just go to a different cinema," he said, gesturing vaguely.

"Also, thank you for putting yourself up for a date, it was a fun way for the Foundation to raise money." Dean looked at his rather battered watch and pulled a small scrap of parchment from his pocket with the different film times on. "It looks like we're headed for the Empire," he said. "Shall we," he asked.

"I'm quite well, thank you. Oh good. I always think that I've lost track of time. Maybe one day I'll wear a watch." Kind of doubtful, because she'd never remember to wear it. Still it was probably a good thing to have one of these days. "There are three cinemas? Goodness." Though she was probably misunderstanding what he was talking about. She didn't get out to the movies very often.

She smiled at him again. "It's not a bother, it looked like maybe some fun. Everyone says I should get out more." Between work and tending to her father, she rarely got out at all anymore. With a nod of her head, she let him lead the way to the movies, staying close to him as to not get lost.

"Yeah, Leicester Square is a bit weird like that. Most of the time cinemas are a bit more spread out. They do all the fancy film premiers here," he said as they walked calmly towards the Empire. Luna wasn't completely ignorant of muggle culture like some wizarding people he'd come across but it wasn't the world she'd grown up in.

He smiled faintly. "Maybe. It's good to do something for yourself sometimes. Mind you I've been told the same thing so I can't exactly talk. What with the working and people having to drag me out to eat and what have you," he said with a wince. The last month and a half had been admittedly been a bit of an extreme case, but it was still true.

It was thankfully a short walk to the cinema, just over the road from the square itself and relatively easy to navigate even though it was a Saturday afternoon, especially since Dean was used to dodging tourists and locals alike from his childhood.

"They do?" Her eyes lit up a little bit, clearly impressed. "That's lovely. I didn't know that. I might have to come down here one day for one. Just to see what happens." Not that she was great around crowds much herself, but she could peer down from a safe vantage. She'd always seen movie premieres in magazines and things that other people showed her. Movie stars seemed quite glamorous to her. Luna liked movies quite a bit. It was probably her favorite muggle thing.

She gave a small chuckle and nodded her head. "We both need to learn a lesson in that, I think. It's hard to do though. I'd like to go out and do all of those things people do. But he needs me and even if he didn't, I have no idea how to do the things I'd like." She definitely understood though, more than he might have thought she did.

Once into the cinema, she looked around and inhaled deeply. "Do you want some popcorn, or pop? Candy maybe? I think I want some popcorn at least.""

"Yeah, they roll out the red carpet, put up a load of barriers and the place floods with people wanting autographs," he said. He'd never been into anything enough to come at an age where he'd be allowed to do it, and since the war the idea of the crowds and photo flashes wasn't even something he wanted to contemplate any closer than the other side of a TV screen.

He nudged Luna gently in companionship. "I think your reasons are a bit more understandable than mine, well, when I'm not doing show prep. How's your dad been recently?" he asked. He didn't know that he'd be able to take care of either of his parents as Luna was, stepping up and taking control like that. Mind you, as had been mentioned, he had enough trouble caring for himself sometimes.

The familiar scent shared by almost every cinema Dean had ever been into assailed him as they walked through the doors, making him smile. "Yes, definitely popcorn and a drink. And we should abuse the privilege of this being paid for and get horribly over priced sweets!" he said, pointing at the pick and mix area. "Tickets first though," he said, walking to the queue for the ticket windows and fishing in his pocket for the envelope he'd picked up from the Foundation with the money from their sponsor.

That sounded pretty amazing actually. One of these days she was going to have to go down there and take a look at a premiere. It wasn't for everyone of course, but she thought it might be fun for her. One of these days.

For now though she was happy to just be watching a simple movie in the regular movie theater. "Maybe but still. He's been.. well sometimes he forgets who I am. And there are days where he can't even get out of bed. Too much pain. I don't really know how to help him when he's like that. He takes his medicine, but it doesn't seem to do any good on those bad days." Luna shrugged a little. "But otherwise he's pretty good." Most days he was completely himself.

"I definitely agree. We should get some of everything." Why not? They weren't paying for it. She beamed over at him and went to get in line for the tickets with him. After they got their tickets, she went to get in line to get all of their snacks. Popcorn. Soda pop. Candy. Anything that she could have possibly wanted. Apparently she wouldn't be eating dinner tonight.

"You should let me know if I can do anything," he said. Not that he thought he'd actually be very useful, but even bringing her some food might be nice if he had the time.

This 'date' was definitely outstripping his investment in tickets, but it wasn't like it was coming from the Foundation's pockets so he didn't mind.

By the time they were headed for the screen Dean was feeling rather laden and glad his hands were large so he could carry it all. He'd half debated grabbing some nachos too but it seemed like a step too far, and the one time he'd had them at a cinema had just been a bit disappointing. "I've been wondering if I could offer to do something for the Foundation," he said. "Other than being a volunteer when they're requested, I mean." It was something he'd been vaguely mulling over since he'd seen the request for date donations and decided he was both too busy and unable to offer anything relevant.

They had a few minutes to waste before even the previews would start so they could still talk quietly.

"I will. For now I'm okay and I think I will be unless it gets worse. It probably will, but I'm trying not to think about it." When she would be forced to stay home and not even be able to get to her vets office. That's when things would get complicated. She really hoped that it wouldn't happen, but she wasn't kidding herself either.

Going to the theater was always far too much money. It cost more than a lot of things, which was sad. But she was okay with paying it if it was for a good cause.

She helped carry things to a pair of seats, trying not to trip and fall on her face. "Oh that sounds nice. I bet they have lots of things that you could do. I imagine they always need volunteers." She didn't know too much about it, but she figured that groups like that always needed things to happen in order to grow and bring in money. If Luna had any spare time, she would have been volunteering for things like that. But she just didn't think she had much more time other than to let herself be auctioned off.

"What are you working on lately?"

Settling into his seat and rather thankful that they were among the more leg-room heavy seats than some cinemas he'd been to he relaxed slightly. "Yeah, true, although I was thinking of something I could donate for them to raffle off. Like an offer of a painted portrait for the winner and up to maybe two others? With the show coming up I'm hoping a few more people might know my name and it might generate some interest. I'll have to get in touch and see what they think." Given the time investment and how much commissioned portraits actually sold for he hoped he could bring in a decent figure for he Foundation if he did offer it, which only seemed likely if his profile was raised through the show.

"I've just finished a couple of things that might end up in the promotions for the show. One with children and a toyshop and the other of some dancing ladies. So now the deadline is passed I've taken the weekend off before I start something else next week." He wasn't sure what would come next, he'd sketched a couple of ideas and even had a couple of canvases already prepped to be worked on.

"How about you, how's the practice?" he asked.

Sitting down next to him, she balanced all of the food in her lap and on the ground until she was situated enough to pick it back up. "Oh! Yes, that makes more sense. And I'm sure they'd really appreciate that. And you're right, any chance to get your name out there is probably a good idea." Especially if he was trying to make a name for himself. She thought it was a good idea though. She liked to paint, but wasn't nearly as good as he was.

"Sometimes I wish the vet worked that way. There really isn't a deadline when animals get sick though. But I'm always happy to be there, helping them no matter when it is." She was the kind of person who got up at two in the morning if someone needed her to check up on their animals. "A weekend off is nice though," she could agree to that.

"It's good. I'm steady with business. There was a.. lot of crups coming in quite injured. It turned out someone was trying to make them fight and get money."

He nodded thoughtfully, then spoke as he realised the dim light would make it harder to see. "Yeah, animals don't exactly keep to a schedule for when they get ill," he said. "I don't either most of the time, but it's nice to take a weekend off when I've been busy."

Crups being made to fight? That didn't sound good, and he said so. "That's horrible, why would anyone do that to an animal?" he asked, indignant.

"Oh!" he said, gesturing as the lights started to dim for the round of advertising and previews running up to the film itself. In a cinema with lots of families it was never going to be completely quiet, but that didn't mean they should really add to the noise.

"It would be nice if we could all get sick when we didn't have much else to do." If only. One of these days, Luna was going to have to take a real vacation. Going somewhere else instead of just taking a couple of hours off here and there. In fact she might go back to the vets after the movie was over. She hadn't decided yet. If she didn't, she would be going back to take care of her father.

She shook her head sadly, "I wish I knew. I guess they think that it's going to get them easy money. It's sad. I've fixed all of the ones I've come across but still." There were probably ones that died. Lots of them. It was sad.

Her slight frown turned into a smile as she settled back to watch the movie. Thankfully she wasn't one of those that talked during the movies. She was too busy stuffing her face with junk.

"Ah that elusive 'normal schedule'," he said. Pretty much nobody he knew seemed to manage it. The medical types took on extra shifts and stayed later deal with patients, the aurors spent extra time on cases, Seamus worked all hours at the pub, and artists like himself were pretty much at the mercy of whims.

He settled back into his seat, content to watch the film while eating and drinking, and ever thankful that children's films generally didn't require anyone to pre-watch for triggers.

By the time it finished he was feeling pretty full, relaxed, and had a smile on his face. He stretched out his legs and turned to Luna as the credits were rolling. "Well, I thought that was pretty fun," he said, rolling to his feet. "What about you?"

Luna couldn't help but grin slightly at his comment. It was pretty elusive. And it must have been nice for the people who worked in an office and knew their schedule completely. No rest for the wicked as they say. She felt for anyone who was on a schedule like theirs. Still she wouldn't have changed it. Unable to take emergencies at night? Nah.

Once the movie was over and most of the food was consumed, she stretched a little and looked over at Dean. "Yeah it was cute for talking sharks and fish. I liked it. I really enjoy cartoons." That probably wasn't a surprise to anyone who knew her though. She got up and grabbed her trash in order to throw it into the rubbish bin.

"Shall I walk you home? Well walk.. you know what I mean. I'd ask if you wanted to get food, but I'm kind of stuffed with popcorn. We could get coffee or something though."

Dean grinned and nodded, anything with animals in (assuming they didn't get killed) was generally a good bet for Luna. And that she liked cartoons wasn't exactly a surprise either. He walked with her, dropping his own rubbish in the bin.

Biting his lip slightly he considered as they wandered out. "I'm too full for food too, but I wouldn't say no to coffee. I've been neglecting my friends lately to do work. More than usual." They exited the cinema and Dean looked around, wondering if they could find somewhere that wasn't a chain and might do good tea or hot chocolate. "Anywhere in mind, or shall we just see what we can find?" he asked.

"Then coffee it is. We can catch up a bit more since there's not a whole lot of talking in movies." Which was kind of a shame. She understood it of course, but she would probably be one of those who talked out loud if she could get away with it.

She glanced around and then shrugged her shoulders. "Let's just see what we can find." Luna started down one direction, figuring that Dean would walk with her. This had been a very nice day. One that she hoped that she would get to have more of in the future. And as they walked down the road, she thought that maybe life wasn't as hectic as she thought.
