Pineview Hall Dance
Who: Open to invited characters and their guests
What: A formal dance*
Where: Pineview Hall
When: Wednesday evening
Rating: SFW for now

Feel free to add your own subthreads

The ballroom at Pineview Hall was just about large enough for the number of guests invited, and Iris Capper had ordered the doors onto the garden opened as well to help deal with any overflow, and to keep the temperature down. Everything was set, from light freshments to the music - and her three eldest children all turned out in their best dress robes. The hidden agenda for the evening was getting her youngest daughter, Bryony, to socialise with some appropriate people. Iris had managed the guest list personally and had ensured that no one was invited of whom she did not approve - though of course she couldn't control who her guests chose to bring with them...

Iris, Shauna and Allegra were all on watch, to make sure Bryony danced with the right people and didn't make too huge a fool of herself. Iris was pleased that Bryony looked almost presentable, for once, after her trip to Hardd Knut and wearing the midnight blue robes Iris had picked out. As the old grandfather clock struck seven, Iris lifted the more stringent of the wards. She would still be alerted whenever anyone entered or exited, but there would be no need for her guests to walk all the way from the boundary of the property.

*(OOC: I'm basing the evening more or less on these dance rules - note particularly that men are expected to dance with anyone their hostess asks them to. Iris Capper will be abusing the privilege.)

Bryony and Open

With her mother at the door to the ballroom making sure to greet her guests, Bryony had been trying to stay away. Her dark blue robes were just a little too tight for comfortable breathing, and the heels she'd been loaned by Shauna made walking painful. She'd thought to grab a glass of water and sit at one of the benches until forced to open the dance with the other Capper women.

Allegra foiled her plans, however, walking straight across the dance floor and catching Bryony's elbow before she could sit down. "Go and ask mother what music she'd like to hear first," Allegra instructed, her nails digging in slightly to the too-plump curve of Bryony's elbow.

"Can't you-" But Allegra had already spun away, pushing a house-elf bearing drinks towards one of the early guests. Bryony sighed and, after smoothing her robes as best she could, walked the long way around to the door, keeping as close to the wall and as far from the guests as she could get away with. "Mot-

Iris cut her off with an obviously-fake cry of joy. "Here she is! I don't believe you've met my daughter, Bryony? My youngest, of course. It's her birthday, but I know I can trust you not to ask a lady her age."

Ernie had come to the ball wearing his finest clothes as would befit the occasion: a formal tartan in the dress MacMillan colours. He genuinely enjoyed wearing it, having an excess supply of pride for his family history even with the current tension between him and his father.

He'd met Mrs. Capper shortly after his initial arrival and had only just gotten a couple of words in edgewise before she was chatting him up amiably. Apparently she knew his father and spoke of him fondly, and he didn't know what Angus had told her but whatever it was had her using the words 'excellent match' and 'purebloods must stick together in times like these'. He didn't have a chance to say anything before she'd left him by the refreshments with a promise of being back with 'someone special'.

Ernie, ever being one to take advantage of free food, had grabbed a plate and started helping himself, but he had the good sense to put the plate down - however reluctantly - when Mrs. Capper returned with a much younger girl in tow. Oh shite, Dad must be trying to fix me up with a girl again and is getting Mrs. Capper to do his dirty work.

He held back a sigh and put on his best smile. It wasn't the girl's fault that his father was a prat and an arse. "Happy Birthday, Bryony," he said with a small, formal bow which showed the excellent manners he'd been brought up to have - even if he didn't use them as often as he could. "Everything looks beautiful tonight, just like our hostess and her daughter."

Bryony returned Ernie's bow with a curtsey, manners having been trained into her to such an extent she didn't even need to think about it. She glanced at her mother, only to see Iris Capper making the same face she did anytime any one complemented Bryony's appearance - a skeptical wince of disagreement that she didn't hide as quickly as she could have done. At least she didn't voice her disagreement as she might have done had Ernie been someone they knew better.

"How you flatter us, Mr MacMillan," she said, taking a slight step back to leave Bryony in charge of taking up the conversation. When that didn't work, she half-turned. "I must go greet another of my guests. I'll leave you young people to talk!" And with that, she was gone. Bryony lifted a hand to push a curl behind her ear and then - remembering the hours of preparation for the ball - quickly dropped it again before she could mess anything up.

She wished she could run away, but Shauna and Allegra were circling and would certainly report on her rudeness to their mother. "Thank you," Bryony said, desperately trying to think of something else to say. "I'm - it's so nice of you to attend."

Pansy and Draco

Pansy had picked her wizard-made gown carefully for this evening. The front was very simple, almost plain, but the back more than made up for it. She'd swept her hair up to better showcase the back, leaving just a few tendrils to curl around her neck. She'd decided against formal robes, going for something more modern while still traditional. She may have been pushing propriety, but she'd grown attached to more Muggle style of clothing, as long as it was properly Wizard designed and made.

After a somewhat chilly introduction with Iris, Pansy headed for the champagne and then settled in to survey the room. There were any number of eligible men on offer, though she supposed they'd been invited more for Byrony's sake than anything else. Iris Capper was not nearly as subtle as she liked to think she was. Pansy made a note to get Byrony alone later, if only to wish her a happy birthday. She knew enough to know that this was not how Byrony wished to spend her evening.

Pansy, on the other hand, loved a good party and though this wasn't a celebration of her birthday, she planned to enjoy herself. So, sipping her champagne, she settled in to do just that.

Pansy and Draco

Draco didn't want to call Iris' greeting rather cold, but he couldn't mistake the slightly distasteful way she greeted him. For once he knew it wasn't because she was disdainful of his family name, but rather because she was annoyed that Narcissa had taken it upon herself to set him up with Astoria rather than one of the eligible Capper girls. Well, it was really no issue for him.

He turned up in the traditional robes, black with a dark green lining, his hair slicked back, feeling rather more respectable than he had in a long time. Shame he still despaired of company. But, looking around, he could see a small handful of people he knew that he could abide spending time with.

Pansy caught his eye, as she had the annoying habit of doing. Draco was certain she enjoyed provoking everyone in her vicinity in some fashion or other. He took himself over to her via the champagne, pushing a stray hair back into place before he arrived at her side.

"Good evening, Ms. Parkinson," Draco smiled, clinking his glass against hers before she'd even returned his greeting. "You look delightful."

Of all the people Pansy wished to associate with, Draco bloody Malfoy was far down the list, above only his harpy of a fiance. She ignored the way her stomach twisted, forced down any reaction other than disinterest, and absolutely did not search for signs that he'd been sleeping and eating well. That wasn't any of her concern any longer; he'd made that abundantly clear. Still, she'd be lying if his polite, impersonal greeting didn't make her eyes burn.

Pansy's reaction to Draco's Ms. Parkinson was minute, and over with too quickly for anyone to notice. She pushed down the impulse to hex him, preferably with some disgusting disease that would spread to Astoria, and smiled perfunctorily. "Thank you, Draco." She clinked her glass against his, and resisted the urge to point out that, whatever he may think, black was not a good color on him. His skin was far too pale.

She lifted her glass, pleased to see that despite the twisting in her stomach that came whenever she saw him, her hands weren't shaking. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction. "I was rather surprised to see your name on the guest list," she said after a moment. Her heels put her over six feet, and she enjoyed looking down her nose at him, however slight it may be. "After all, anyone can see her design to find her daughter a suitable," she stressed the word ever so slightly. "Husband."

Bryony had danced two dances already - one with Rowan and one with her father. The cushioning charms she'd hastily cast on her high heels before the first dance were already wearing off, but there was nothing she could do until she could snatch a moment to herself. It was bad manners to do such things in public, she'd had that drilled into her from when she was first expected to wear make up.

She'd just grabbed a glass of pumpkin juice and finished it in three long, unladylike gulps when she spotted Shauna approaching. "We have to find you a partner for the next dance. Is there anyone here that you like?" Without waiting for Bryony to finish, she took her arm and steered her towards the open doors to the garden. In her haste she very nearly bumped into someone just coming inside.

"Oh, how clumsy of me. I'm terribly sorry, but really this is just too much good fortune. I was just about to go looking for a dance partner for my sister." She jabbed Bryony in the ribs, forcing her to stand up straighter. "And here you are! Please tell me you haven't a partner already."

Bryony, Millicent, and Thomas (NPC)

"Do you think they'll let a man grab something harder than pumpkin juice?" Thomas leaned over to brush an invisible speck off his younger cousin's shoulder, using the opportunity to lean in and whisper, eyes darting about in an overly done furtive gesture. "If we're going to go through the whole formal rigmarole, surely we'll get a reward for it?"

Millicent's lips turned up slightly as she watched him out of the corner of her eye. If he hadn't been her cousin, they could have made the loveliest picture, she thought -- the young woman sitting prettily on a garden bench under softly glowing fairy lights, her suitor bending solicitously to catch her every word. All she needed was a fan, and the ability to speak more formally without sounding like a two-Knut actor. "You can look, but you know I won't be able to ask." She looked up fully, smiling teasingly. "You know the rules, Tommy." As he pouted slightly, eyes sparkling under thick lashes, she winked, relenting before he tried anything else. "All right. All right. They're bound to have some punch out by now, and we can take a peek around while we're getting some." She ignored his tiny smirk of triumph, playful as it was, and stood, putting her hand out for his arm. "Come along, fiend."

"Fiend!" Thomas laughed softly, squeezing her hand with the crook of his elbow. "Why, that's..." His voice trailed off as Millicent suddenly and carefully jerked him back from stepping into someone. "My apologies!" They both smiled politely to the Misses Capper, and Millicent left Thomas to the limelight of Shauna's attention, quietly giving Bryony an unobtrusive once-over as she listened. Her dress robes were really the loveliest colour on her, but her eyes looked a bit strange, and Millicent couldn't help opening her mouth to speak the moment Shauna was finished.

"Oh, we were actually coming in to dance," she fibbed, smiling sweetly and ignoring the sidelong glance Thomas gave her as both Capper girls turned to look at her. "But I was just saying to him that I could do with a bit of punch, and Tommy's just aching to take another round." She tilted her head, regarding Bryony with a wider, more genuine smile. "He's really very good, if you don't mind my saying so."

Charlie and Open

2014-10-16 12:33 am UTC (link)
Charlie felt he had made something of a poor impression on his hostess as he arrived. Not that he'd sworn, or been outright insulting, but his formal manners were somewhat lacking and he didn't think Mrs Capper had been impressed, although he had done his best.

Now, however, it was time to dance. He'd been going over the formal dances he knew in his head in the last few days, and was relatively convinced he wouldn't embarrass himself by forgetting the steps. Wobbling on his leg on the other hand, was another matter entirely. Stepping to the side at speed wasn't exactly something he did too often, and it was one of those things he had a feeling might topple him. Still, he smoothed down the navy robes he was wearing, courtesy of Percy, and approached a young woman.

"Excuse me, Miss, but may I have the pleasure of the next set?" he asked, completing the expected bow.

Charlie and Alicia and Open
[info]_alicia_
2014-10-16 09:56 am UTC (link)
This was by far not the first formal Pureblood ball Alicia had attended. It was, however, the first she had attended as a plus one – or as her nervousness liked to remind her tonight: not someone actually invited. Even though it had been during the war, she had attended balls with Daniel, as part of ‘Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Fawley’ and afterwards..? Well, afterwards, the invitations had simply stated ‘Mrs. Daniel Fawley’. Tonight, though, she was here as neither; she was here as the guest of Mr. Adrian Pucey. Of course, being a guest of a guest at Mrs. Capper’s ball – supposedly her daughter’s birthday, though that wasn’t really the impression Alicia had gotten – and wanting to spend time with your escort, took more planning and strategizing than the average Quidditch match, considering the limitation to how many times a wizard was allowed to dance with the same witch, and fact that turning down an invitation for a dance wasn’t permitted.

So Alicia stood a little straighter, her smile soft and polite as she made the required small-talk, accepted the dance invitations that came her way, did her best to ignore the dull heaviness in her stomach when Adrian was once again set up for a dance by their host and reminded herself to check with her grandparents for a more exact date of their next formal affair. It would be Muggle, yes, but at couples didn’t get split up, unless they were married.

She had just disposed of her empty glass, when a presence next to her drew her attention, and a moment later, she recognised Charlie’s voice before she recognised him. “You may,” she said with a smile and a dignified curtsy that would have her old dance teacher, Mrs. Lewisham, weep with joy. Quickly and discreetly, she strengthened the small ward around her feet that kept the hem of her dress from getting caught in her shoes, and once her wand was safely hidden in the folds of chiffon, she accepted Charlie’s hand and let him lead the way to the dance floor. “You’re good with this?” she asked him quietly with a quick glance to his leg. “I’m stronger than I look and have worn heels for years, if need be.”

Richard and OPEN
[info]the_richard

Given the 'traditional' attitudes of the Capper family - in Richard's opinion the word 'backwards' played a prominent part - he'd gone traditional himself. White shirt, white tie, white gloves, formal black and black patent leather dancing pumps. As much as he would have preferred to be elsewhere - arguing contract law in Russian would have even been preferable - he had given in and made the required appearance, knowing his mother would have bombarded him with howlers if he had passed up a pureblood social occasion.

He'd given a polite greeting to the hostess, equally polite nods to the daughters from a reasonably safe distance, and slipped out of range of the sharks, as he called them, to see if there was anything other than champagne, which he didn't really care for, to drink.

A neutral 'social' smile was on his face as Rich wandered over to watch the dancing.

Pandora had decided before coming alone that she would dance as many dances as she could snag a partner for. She hadn't been to an event like this, like she'd done in her younger years, in a long time, and she found much to her surprise that she'd... missed it. She'd missed some of the rules and the flirting and the dancing above most everything. She'd forgotten she'd once loved that part very very much.

And still did, apparently.

It was a world she understood, at least, unlike the world she'd lived in for the last eight or so years.

She smiled and slipped up beside Richard, her black dress hugging her perfectly and the train charmed to do what she needed it to. Her hair was done perfectly and she felt like a lady of a powerful family for the first time in years. "Hello, darling," she drawled. "Fancy seeing you here."

Rolf was in a perfect new set of dress robes designed and tailored by Astoria. This set was black, perfect for black tie events like this or the fundraiser he had coming up next month. He really needed to check in with his grandmother's event planner, he thought idly. He'd greeted their hostess as expected and promised to dance several times, polite as expected from the son -- and more to point, grandson -- of a very good family.

But all of that was unimportant to the fact he had the most fabulous looking woman in the place on his arm. "If I haven't told you how beautiful you are tonight, then I should be hexed into a million pieces," he told her, arm drawing her close to his side. "Would such a beautiful lady concede to dancing with me?"

Rose had tried. She had really tried, but no matter how hard she had tried, she just couldn’t make the amazing dress Astoria Greengrass had made for her fit over the boots she would have so preferred to wear tonight. Oh, Rose would wear heels, she just preferred to wear heels on a pair of boot that ensured that the footwear was safely attached to her feet and not at risk of slipping off like small, delicate shoes were wont to do. At least the ones she had found had straps all over them, so she hoped… though her favourite pair of boots were safely tucked away in her purse. Just in case.

Though she had always found Rolf the most attractive when he was in his element – outdoors and ruffled – she had to admit that him dressed to the nines and looking at her the way he was tonight was easily taking its place among her favourites. “Always,” she beamed up at Rolf, “and especially since it’ll keep you from being matched off for at least one set.”

Blaise would have loved to balk at the rules set before him for this event. He found it interesting that for all the talk of inclusion and moving forward there were still those who refused to move on. Not that he expected the older generation to easily give up their ideals. Still, he was shocked by the number of his contemporaries, himself included, that easily bowed down to their requirements.

Therefore, Blaise put his own plan in motion. He chose to limit himself to one dance each so that he didn't waste all his time with any one individual in a single block of time. Having danced with just about every lady at least one time he began to look around for whom he should start his second round with. As soon as he made eye contact with someone acceptable he made his way their direction.

Romilda had smiled when Blaise made eye contact. Her gown had certainly caused some gossip among the more elite in the room, but that hadn't stopped her from having a dance partner at every available opportunity. Of course, they'd all been dreadfully boring, and she longed to take her elbow length white gloves off, but for the most part it had been just another evening among Purebloods. Her parents hadn't been among society's higher echelons before the war or after, but that didn't stop them from being invited to such things as she grew up.

When Blaise reached her, she held out her hand delicately, "A dance, sir?" She asked, a flirty smile on her face.

Theodore had answered the invitation in the positive, although he wasn't sure why looking back on it. Maybe it was because it would have been too rude to decline yet another social invitation, maybe because the idea of spending yet another night sitting inside his own head had been too daunting for him at the time, he didn't know, but he had agreed and he had to stand by his word. He'd arrived in slightly sombre dark green and black dress robes, his wand tucked into his gloves and easily accessible as was usual, alongside carefully hidden charms that would warn him should he try to eat or drink anything poisoned - probably unecessary but he wouldn't have been able to attend without them on his person. He'd had to take two different calming draughts as it was just to get him balanced enough to come to the party and he was unhelpfully feeling a little anxious about the fact that he was so relaxed. Or relaxed in his terms at least, which meant that he wasn't keeping his back to the wall all the time and he didn't look like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

He'd been better at hiding his hypervigilance when he'd been at Hogwarts, partially because it had been easier for him to fly under the radar and partially because he hadn't had a nervous breakdown at that point. His pieces had been thoroughly scattered after his stay at the Janus Thickey ward and he still hadn't quite put them all back together again. He'd greeted Mrs Capper politely, falling back into old social niceties with some relief, and had given his best wishes to Bryony on her birthday. He hadn't taken the plunge of dancing with anyone just yet though, but he wasn't naive enough to expect not to be roped into it at some point in the evening.

Greg hadn't particularly wanted to come to the dance. For a start, he didn't like dancing. In addition, he didn't particularly know any of the Capper children and while he did expect to marry one day he did not expect to have to make the match himself. Social functions weren't really a situation in which he shone, and he doubted he'd ever impress any pureblood lady on his own merit.

Knowing Draco, Astoria and Pansy were going to be here had helped a little but it had been Catherine's insistence that he attend that had really convinced him. He arrived a little late, having had to find time to change after work and then being unable to locate his dress robes. Finally, he found them and managed to apparate to Pineview Hall. The dancing had already started, which meant he was safe from being expected to participate for the net half hour or so. After a greeting from his hostess, Greg wondered the ballroom in search of food, friends or (preferably) both.

He spotted Theodore before anyone else and bulled his way through the slight crowd to reach him. Theo had always been nice to him, helping him study even when Greg hadn't been particularly graceful about accepting the help. They hadn't seen each other in a while and Greg was willing to forego food for the time being in favour of catching up. "Didn't know you were coming," he greeted his friend. "How are you?"

Coming off the dance floor from the… Alicia had lost count of how many dances she’d had, she made a beeline for Adrian, who didn’t look to be about to get dragged out there at this point. While it was tempting to have him ask her and have some time with him for at least two sets, she desperately needed to refresh the Cushioning Charms on her shoes, and she was a little thirsty at this point. Catching his eyes, she held his gaze until she was right in front of him and allowed herself to break protocol when she reached for his glass and took a small sip.

“Life saver,” she smiled at him. “So, do I get to take you home tonight or have you been set aside for one of the Capper daughters?”

Adrian smiled when she stole a sip of his firewhiskey and water, and then gave her a small, low chuckle at her comment. "I made it clear you were here as more than my plus-one, thank you very much. Though I must say I think Iris was disappointed to see that my date was you. Other women she might be able to scare away."

He looked out at he dance floor - still a swirl of gowns and robes - and slipped an arm around her, keeping it at a proper place on her back, though. "I do believe you get to take me home though, if you want to, of course," he said nearly into her ear, only loud enough for her to hear. As his mouth moved away he smiled and nodded at an elderly gentleman he remember his mother having dealings with at some point or another. So far, no one had mentioned his parents, or Sera's marrying of a Muggle, and while he liked Will a lot and certainly didn't care for blood politics or purity, he was grateful he'd spent an evening among the more traditional families without having to defend them.

Bryony and Zacharias

By the time a brief interval was called, Bryony was thoroughly sick of dancing. She hated it at the best of times, and before she'd always been able to rely on a dance (or two) with Marcus, who was tall and broad enough that she didn't feel quite as much like a hippogriff trying to lumber around the dance floor. Tonight, apart from her family, she'd danced almost entirely with strangers she had no idea how to talk to and whom she was certain were dismayed to be forced to dance with the largest and least graceful girl in the room.

She wished she could escape to her old room, or else flee the house entirely and apparate to Marcus' flat. It was late, but he'd probably still make her that dinner he'd offered - which would be welcome, as Bryony had barely eaten all day. The house-elves were supposed to be circulating with sandwiches and small cakes but as was not unusual, they seemed to be taking pains to avoid Bryony - probably at Iris' instruction. Starting to feel a hunger headache coming on, Bryony tried to get to the table of refreshments by the door, but with the dance floor cleared it was difficult to make her way through.

As she tried to squeeze past, face hot and wishing she were willowy enough to not have to do so, she managed to step on someone's foot. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she said, her apology genuine and not just an expected politeness. "Are you alright?"

Zacharias kept from cursing as someone stepped on his foot. It wasn't so much that it hurt as it was that it surprised him that had made him want to curse. Instead, he said, "I'm alright, yes," as, apart from some pain, he doubted his foot would be any worse for the wear in the long run. He did, however, take a few steps back, mostly to get out of everyone else's way, and shifted his weight to his non-aching foot to relieve some of the pressure. He also glanced down, briefly, to see if the top of his shoe had been scuffed. They weren't, and he wouldn't have complained to the young witch if they had been. They were just not something he'd bought. For some reason, his parents had decided he needed new dress robes and shoes when he mentioned this ball, and he just needed to know if he needed to fix it before his parents ever noticed the scuffs.

"Are you alright?" he said after a couple of seconds. He glanced at her from head to toe, checking to make sure she hadn't tripped or possibly twisted her ankle by walking on the uneven surface of his foot. Part of him asked out of genuine concern while a smaller part was aware that she was the daughter of the hostess, at least if what he'd noticed of the hostess and her were anything to go by, namely the hostess and a few others trying to pair her up for dances with some of the other wizards at this event.
