Theodore's smile had Ernie feeling warm inside. Normally, Ernie would have been trying to flirt even if the bloke next to him was straight or unavailable - it was simply his way of relating to people - but something told him to tone himself down. Theodore reminded him a little of a shy, skittish puppy who would take off if provoked, yet would stay if treated with great kindness. Luckily, kindness was second nature to Ernie.
"That's brilliant news," he replied, genuinely relieved. He really did love animals, and felt that Theodore had had enough bad luck for one month. "I'm happy for you. My day was uneventful, but felt really long. It's nice to get out, though, and remember there's a world outside St, Mungo's. And thanks for the book, I can't wait to read it."
