RP: Lunch
Who: Susan and Seamus

What: Lunch, whether Seamus likes it or not

Where: Finnigan' Pub

When: Wednesday 15th of October, Lunchtime

Rating: SFW

Susan marched down Monument Alley with an expression of such extreme determination that a swathe of free space was continuously squeezed open in front of her. Admittedly, this collective regard for her personal space may have been due to the fact that she was wearing her Auror robes and heels that shot her above six foot, but she chose to ignore such trivialities. She reached Finnigan's pub and was nearly barrelled over by a clearly drunk man, who spent a moment looking at her boobs before his eyes flicked to her face, saw the expression there, and suddenly found a wave of unpleasant sobriety wash over him. She stood impassively as he stumbled through a number of apoligies before one of his less terrified friends dragged him out of the way.

She marched through the door and up to the bar and gave a brilliant smile. "Go and get Seamus, Please. Tell him he's having lunch with me," she said in a voice that brokered no argument. She watched them go and smiled, this conversation was far overdue.

Seamus had been up in The Roost, finishing off a tour of the pub for a customer who wanted to host a private function. With more and more activities filling up the pub's schedule, it wasn't something they did regularly any more but it had been a major source of income when Seamus had been starting up and still seeking people to run the various activities. He was leading Mr Farling back down the stairs when he side-stepped to avoid his messenger, panting after having run first down and then up the stairs in search of him.

"Well, Mr Farling, you know how to reach me once you've decided on a time and date," he said, shaking hands before taking his leave. He rolled his shoulders as he walked to the bar, staying on the 'staff' side of it so he could convey their food orders to Romeo. He was pretty sure that Susan had a reason for being here besides just wanting lunch. It was something she did, anytime Dean started dating. She'd drop in with food (or willing to pay for food, since the pub had opened) just to see how Seamus was 'coping'. It was not a conversation Seamus wanted to have, and he was hoping he could forestall her.

"So," he said as he found her. "Romeo does these amazing crispy tortilla things you can use as spoons to eat salsa and guacamole and this amazing spicy cheese dip. What do you reckon, will that be enough food for you or should I get some pub classics too?" Susan's appetite tended to depend on what kind of work she'd been doing before her meal.

Susan peered at her friend for a long moment, deducing that he no doubt thought she was there to check up on how he was with the whole Dean dating Ophelia thing - which to be fair she sort of was. However, the way that he'd stomped around like a bear that had not only had it's honey stolen but had then been forced to complete difficult quantum physics equations had more or less made her mind up about how badly he was dealing with the situation. Plus she was although there for a completely different reason. "Are they cheesy tortillas or proper tortillas," she asked cocking her head at him and raising and eyebrow. "But whatever, as long as we're eating while I badger you into helping me with a little project of mine, I don't really care."

She sat down at a table and smiled up at him pleasantly for several moments, before grinning properly. "So, you know how my Aunt was murdered in my house, right," she asked, smoothing her features into neutrality. "Well I've decided that I might let Edgar have my house and buy a new one, and I was wondering if you'd help. What do you say?"

"Proper tortillas," Seamus answered, unfazed by Susan's 'if I judge you unworthy I will stomp you with my boots' expression. "Makes them himself and everything." After she agreed, Seamus let her choose a table while he popped into the kitchen to make his request of Romeo, who promised to send the food out as soon as it was ready. Seamus grabbed a spoonful of whatever was cooking while he was there since he'd once again forgotten breakfast.

He found Susan's table easily enough and sat down opposite her. He was used to her blunt way of speaking about her aunt and knew it was her way of coping. If it allowed her to deal with it, who was he to complain? "Of course," he said, without thinking. Then he frowned slightly. "Help how?" He knew she didn't need help with money, so probably she wanted him to help move her things once she'd decided on a house. "I'm pretty busy as it is," he added with an apologetic shrug. And he was only likely to get more busy as Christmas neared. Still, Susan knew he'd do what he could.

Susan nodded in approval, maybe the new chef would be alright after all. "Then he can stay, I will allow it," she joked, with a little smirk. "But actually, they sound amazing if I'm understanding what they are properly." She watched him wander in the kitchen torn between amusement and exasperation at his behaviour. Still, he was the type who needed to be busy - especially when the love of his life was dating someone else.

She watched him blink at the casual and graphic way he mentioned her aunt, but shrugged it off; if he wasn't used to her by now then he never would be. "Oh don't you look so panicked at the question," she teased, with a smirk and a wink. "But don't worry, I would never dream of making you say, take three days off right before a Concealment and Disguise exam to help you move into a pub," she said with a little snort. "I was going to ask you to pose as my partner to help with the realtors because Eddie's busy and also it's still weird, but I know you're super busy with ah, things, so maybe just a hand moving things?"

"Hey!" Seamus said, affronted. "I didn't ask you to help for me. You'd already done as much studying as you could handle! You needed a distraction. Besides, didn't you get like 90% on that exam?" He settled into his chair, pulling out his deck of cards just so he'd have something to do with his hands. He was honestly surprised she hadn't mentioned Dean yet. Maybe he'd misread her. She did seem to have dropped all her hinting about the two of them... Maybe she'd finally decided Dean was better off with someone else. The idea made Seamus' stomach clench, but that was just because he didn't like things changing.

He tipped his head slightly, brows furrowed. "Why do you need anyone to pretend to be your partner?" he asked. He wasn't exactly familiar with buying property. He'd lived at home until he basically inherited the pub. Still, surely if Susan had enough money to buy a place on her own - which she did - she wouldn't need a fake boyfriend?

"Aha, suuuuuure," Susan replied with a theatrical little eye roll, glad that Seamus could still banter. It was when he could no longer banter that you had to worry. "But you're right, I was ready to hex Harry and Neville's balls off and possibly snog Hyperion, so the distraction was all for the best. Plus, I got 94% thank you very much! I hid in the roof, remember?" She watched him take out the deck of playing cards and felt her stomach drop in much the same way that a dog drops into a pile of mud after bath, which is to say treacherously and with great gusto. If he was fidgeting then... But no, not it would be fine. He was sad but obviously not that bad.

She sighed disgustedly. "Because they're more likely to sell me the place if they think I'm part of some young yuppy couple. You wouldn't have to do anything other than, stand there and be handsome - so that's covered - and maybe call me sweetheart?"

"I remember," Seamus agreed, shuffling his cards but not actually laying them out. They didn't have time for a game before food. After a moment, he started sorting them out into suits. It meant he'd have to shuffle them again before he next played, but it was worth it.

He glanced up at her words and almost said 'wouldn't Dean be better?'. He was at least interested in women, and he was the handsome one. But, no. That would be asking a lot of Ophelia. So he shrugged. "Of course I will, sweetheart." He managed a smile, albeit a slightly fixed one.

Susan's eyes twinkled, remembering how she'd actually made Auror Proudfoot laugh when she'd eventually dropped down from the roof after they gave up looking for her. Her smile dimmed as he continued to play with his cards, sorting them into their decks in a bout of neatness. "Are you alright," she asked, looking pointedly at the cards. "Are you nervous or something?"

She smiled with relief. "You're amazing, do you know that? I know it's a weird thing to ask but some Muggle realtors won't sell anything beyond a two bedroom flat to single girls out of some sort of weird sexism, so you'll help me get the home I want." She paused and tilted her head for a moment as he continued to fiddle with the deck of cards. "So what else is new darling, fill me in. I've been utterly remiss in keeping up with you in the last few weeks."

Seamus looked up, surprised to find her watching his hands. It wasn't as if it were unusual for him to have cards on him. The bar got boring when there were no customers and it was handy to have something to do to keep him occupied. "No -" He didn't have time for further explanation as their food arrived. He swept the cards off the table carelessly, awkwardly handling them back into a regular shape and returning them to his pocket.

As soon as the food was laid in front of them, Seamus reached for a crispy fried tortilla and dipped it into the salsa, crunching his way through it before speaking again. "Sure, that's ridiculous but I don't mind helping." He shrugged as he tried to think what was 'new' with him. Nothing, really, other than Romeo. "New chef," he said, gesturing at the food as if to say 'tuck in'. "Nothing much else. What about you?"

Susan assessed the slightly quizzical way he returned her gaze and nodded to herself, the way he fiddled with the cards seemed slightly jerkier than usual but he wasn't being an actual jerk which was good. If he was being a jerk to her than it usually meant that he was well on the way to a man pain meltdown. "Well that's-" she stopped and watched as the food was delivered, noting the tortillas with interest.

She smiled at him and nodded. "Thank you, charming, that's a relief!" She quirked her brow at his definition of new and straightened her shoulders, wondering if she was going to have to pull pieces of information from him with a vice or maybe it would be worthwhile having a trainee tail him. Shaking her head, she took a tortilla and dipped it daintily in salsa. "Very nice," she commented after a moment. "The food seems excellent, what's he like?" She took another spoon and ate it thoughtfully. "Dean mentioned you took him to see your parents but that he hadn't seen you much since then?" She continued to eat her tortilla and cheese and went over what was new with her for a moment. "New with me? Hmmm well I seem to have acquired a boyfriend, I'm looking for a new house, there seems to be an illegal crup fighting ring around somewhere, my father's currently in a fresh bout of depression and is on antidepressant potions again, I have to submit some Wizengamot nominations by next Wednesday, Rose and Rolf are dating, and Dennis has had two one night stands." She took a sip of water and thought for a moment longer. "Oh and my dog likes eating roses, which is odd but what can you do."

"He's great," Seamus said. "Really enthusiastic, already coming up with new ideas, calls me sir." He gave her a sort of crooked smile. He still hadn't completely got used to that, but if that was what made Romeo's mother happy, he could cope. His smile fell a little at the mention of Dean, but he shrugged. "I haven't really seen anyone, unless they've come in here. Busy planning the raffle and getting Romeo's group set up and planning for Halloween." That last was more or less a lie, he hadn't started thinking about Halloween yet except for ordering food — lot of pumpkins, of course.

He listened to Susan's sudden deposit of all her news in practically one breath and raised an eyebrow. "Boyfriend? Eddie stepped up, then?" Last time they'd talked about it, Susan hadn't seemed sure what was going on. "There must be something in the air." First Dean, now Susan. Or technically, perhaps Susan had been first. Not that it mattered. It was just that this situation was rare - both his best friends dating at the same time. At least Justin was getting his schedule sorted and Seamus could see him more often. "And Rose and Rolf, too? That's nice." He didn't know either of them well, but it only confirmed his 'something in the air' theory.

Susan gave a great snort of laughter. "He calls you sir? Oh that's precious," she said with a smile, deeply happy for Seamus. "Still, politeness is a nice quirk compared to burning everything. I mean it's not even a quirk, just something you don't see much these days." She frowned at him for a moment. "Don't forget your friends Seamus, work is important but so are friends," she admonished, before smiling ruefully. "Of course I know that's the pot calling the cauldron black, but maybe it's something we should both work on."

She shrugged helplessly. "Maybe? I haven't seen much of him lately, what with the bank and everything but yeah, I think so. Susan looked at him closely, looking for any of the usual signs of self loathing that seemed to pop up when Dean was dating. "There must be, yes," she replied evenly. "Still Ernie says you've got Justin to keep you warm at night so it's not all doom and gloom eh?"

Seamus shrugged slightly, his face settling into what he hoped was a neutral expression. "I'm not forgetting anything. I'm just busy." He couldn't help feeling a little defensive - as if he were being accused of deliberately neglecting his friends, when if anything they were the ones who had too much on their plates to make time for him. Too many other people they needed to spend time with. "You all know where to find me," he added, tone definitely sulky as he reached for another tortilla.

Dipping it into the sour cream, he shrugged. "Well, he's always away working. Doesn't mean he's not missing you." He didn't really know Eddie well, but he seemed a decent enough bloke. If he'd given the impression he was interested, hopefully he'd at least try. "Oh, Ernie says, does he?" Seamus rolled his eyes. He and Justin weren't exactly some big secret, Susan hardly needed Ernie to tell her. "That's not the same. We've been spending more time together because he's finally got his schedule sorted." But it still wasn't any big romance. They were just friends - friends who were physically compatible.

Susan arched an eyebrow at his petulant tone, stifling a sigh at what was obviously a mood brought on by the fact that Dean was getting laid by someone other than Seamus. "Yes we do, and you know where to find us. Like I said, we both need to work on it."

"Yeah I guess so," she replied with a nod, taking one of the tortillas for herself. It was her turn to roll her eyes. "You're 'spending more time together because he's finally got his schedule sorted' is it," she asked with the liberal use of sarcastic air quotes. "Oh Seamus Finnigan, you are not stupid. He's sorted his schedule out to spend more time with you. Also because he got promoted I suppose." She wanted to tell him many things, least of which being the fact he'd picked the very worst person to have one of his self-destructive flings with and that she would be very displeased with both him and Justin when they broke one another's hearts, but she decided to let it drop - she couldn't be bothered with the fallout. "Still I'm glad you've got someone to spend more time with," she added in a more conciliatory tone.

"Anyway, shall we change the topic of conversation to something where we're both not grumpy little shits? Like Hallowe'en. Is Finnigan's doing anything for it? Rose said something about a party, but I figured that was for Dennis' birthday."

Seamus properly scowled at Susan then, because it seemed to him she must be deliberately misunderstanding the situation and that irritated him - far more than it ought to have done, but he wasn't examining that just yet. "Come off it. He didn't sort his schedule out to spend more time with me!" The idea was ridiculous. "We don't even spend that much time together. Maybe one night a week, if that. I see Ben and Bryn more often." Her attempt to console him didn't improve matters. He didn't 'have someone' the way she seemed to think.

He continued to frown until she mentioned Halloween - and then he groaned. "I don't know. I need to sort something." He should probably have done that by now, but the raffle had taken most of his attention. "Guess I'll miss Dennis' birthday." Which wasn't unusual; since he started working in pubs he'd had to miss a lot of birthdays and parties. It was just the way things were, but that didn't mean he had to like it.

Susan paused for a moment, pushing down the rather irrational urge to begin to laugh. The expression with which Seamus was looking at her rivaled a teenage boy at the very height of the neanderthalic grunting stage, and it filled her with a vast sense of poorly timed amusement. "Oh he didn't," she asked him, her tone the epitome of sweetness and accommodation. "My mistake, I must be thinking of a different Justin I know." She left off trying to console him anymore, it wasn't worth the time when he was in one of his black moods. Her new focus was on not blasting him into oblivion for being a prat.

She nodded thoughtfully. "You probably do. There's lots of folk who love Hallowe'en or Samhain or what ever it's called these days," she said with a nod to the people around them. "As for Dennis' birthday, well Rose and Dennis are both intelligent enough to get that attendance on Hallowe'en weekend would be rather lackluster, they'll probably do something the following weekend?"

Seamus didn't smile in response to her sweet tone - it was obvious from her words she didn't mean it, she was sticking to her flat wrong opinion that Justin had changed his schedule for Seamus. He knew from experience that arguing with Susan would get him nowhere. Most of the time he was able to let it go, but today he was feeling belligerent. "I think I'd know, rather than you. It's just sex, and he's not that desperate for it that he'd change his schedule for it." He was being blunt - and possibly a little unfair to Justin - but he didn't care.

"I guess we'll see." He pushed his food away, fingers itching to get his cards back out. Susan would notice, though, and Seamus was inclined to damn all aurors and their observational skills. There was really no graceful way out of this conversation, but Seamus was ready to be done with it. "I'd better get back to work."

Susan looked him directly in the eye and arched a brow in a manner that could only be described as a condescending - which was frankly quite impressive for an eyebrow quirk. "Do you really think so little of not just yourself, but also Justin," she finally asked.

She stood and walked around the table, where she pulled him in for a hug and kissed each cheek in turn. "You know you're one of my best friends and I love you dearly, right," she asked, patting his shoulder affectionately. "But if you keep pushing people away from you Seamus, they'll eventually stop coming back." She turned on her heel and walked out of the pub, shaking her head slightly as she went.
