Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!other

Quick question!
Is there a community around that combines the tag/labeling system of pb_updates with the by-name archiving of wikicon? And if not, is anyone interested in something like that? I'd be up for slavin' it up on such a project if there's a need for it. Wikicon is great, but half the posts are broken/poorly labeled/locked and pb_updates is great, except you can't search by name, and not everyone updates there. So, let me know if I've been missing out on a community, or if there's a need to start one! :D

I don't know that I really think there's a need for it personally. I don't really think wikicon is poorly labelled and there's a dropbox to report broken posts. And there really isn't a way around locked icon posts without posting the icons in an unlocked elsewhere. That's just my opinion, though! I love wikicon and I never use pb_updates so I'm biased!

I love both communities, but I do think that wikicon is poorly labelled. Some of the names are still spelled incorrectly, and half the time when a batch of a person from a specific title is left labeled with just their name, but the following batch will have a title tacked on to it. So if you're looking for a specific look from the person you're browsing, you have to click every link. I wasn't trying to get around the locked posts, but simply label them - it'd at least save clicking time for a handful of people, or let them know to go join/friend that person ahead of time. Lol.

Wikicon only labels batches that are indicated to be from one specific source (movie/tv show/etc), which is why some are labeled and some aren't - if the batch if from multiple sources or the source isn't listed by the maker, she won't put the label.

I'm not saying a description wouldn't be helpful, just that the labeling has some reason to it and isn't just something haphazard.

The thing is, I only know this doesn't happen because it's happened to me. I label the film/show/source for all of my entries and half of them don't get labeled there (but I greatly appreciate our stuff being included, that's not the idea, lol). I understand what you're saying, but what I was saying is that even when things are labeled properly (in the subject of an entry), they still get left out. I could point out specific examples, but you get the point. XD

I use a number of sites when looking for icons since communities pop up or close, or go dormant, all the time. I can definitely understand where it is you're coming from with the question though.

I use a lot of sites as well - including this page. It'd just be nice to have a complete/communal place where everything could be listed helpfully and accurately.

Pb_updates does organise by name, too. On the main comm you can search by tag, but if you go to the memories, all posts are archived by name.

The last time I checked pb_updates memories, there were several of my own entries/PBs missing, so I can only assume that was the case for at least a few other makers. Plus, they're labeled as (mostly) unmoderated now.

Admittedly, the memories haven't been updated recently. In fact, I volunteered to do just that last year and I went back through a year's worth of entries and added them to the memories. But I can only go through it when I have time to and it's a big job. There were supposed to be four of us tackling the job but two of the others never got in touch with me and the other girl.

I think your idea is a good one, though. If you decide to go ahead and do it and you want some help, I'd be happy to volunteer. I will be quite busy with uni but I can spare bits of time in the evenings.

Hey! Any help would be appreciated. I sort of explained my theory for how it could work in this comment, so lemme know what you think/if you have suggestions. :D

P.S. I have a 20-month-old, so 'busy' is understandable. XD

I like this idea! Being able to search by look and PB in one place would be really helpful. I use both ~wikicon and ~pb_updates all the time, but I have to admit that ~pb_updates can be kind of annoying when I have to filter through every single tag that they've split up by year. And ~wikicon's labelling just isn't as thorough as I'd like it to be.

How would you set it up? Where people can update with their own posts like ~pb_updates or where you're archiving it, like ~wikicon? Or some combo of both?

I'm not sure what could be done about the tags system being split up - I wasn't aware of there being any issues with 'too many tags' until I saw them starting to do that a few years back. I haven't run into the problem myself, but I'd want to avoid it if I could.

I have a community set up for anyone who's interested/wants to toss in ideas/wants to help - [info]theiconlibrary.

I feel like there should be an entry for each subject, and then gather and list all of the available batches within that entry, including whether or not it's locked, and possibly with one sample from each batch. Each batch would be linked to, and the creator could be listed under that, and people could comment with links when they update a specific person. All the entries would be tagged, so that you could just click on a person's name, or a look you want, and only a few entries would come up, instead of fifty billion to sift through, or just a long, black & white list of memories. And/or we could make a list of memories within the community as well if people want to browse that way.

Feedback? I could be going about this process the entirely wrong way, so don't be shy folks! lol XD

I wouldn't know where to start with suggesting tags based on descriptions etc. The tags at pb_updates always confused the hell out of me, and the only ones I ever really looked through were the ones that were specific character suggestions.

It would be really good to have an up-to-date set of memories, though. A lot of the entries in the memories over at pb_updates are broken links or purged and deleted journals.

It's going to be a big job, though. And I think we'd have to ask each icon-maker if they minded being added to the memories before we did it.
