When Effie had showed up at his place for dinner, the sun had just been setting--least what of it was visible through the cloud of fog that had, as per usual, descended on London. They had had dinner (take-away Chinese, predictably, least for Pepper), and flirting and teasing had gradually led to Pepper's bedroom and his lumpy futon, sans clothing. He'd been mulling the entire situation over and over again since being told that it would be Effie's First Time (what he felt was the ominousness had led him to capitalize it in his head), and despite how much he'd come to want her--like, really want her--in the past few weeks, he'd kept a concerned look on his face for the entire duration of it, far more preoccupied with her well-being than with personal satisfaction. A first, for Pepper. He supposed that that meant he really cared about her. Now it was dark out except for the streetlights, the beams feeding through Pepper's open bedroom blind. They were lying with the blanket pulled up, him watching her still with that overly concerned look on his face. "Are you okay?" he asked tentatively. Effie didn't feel any different. For some reason, she had always thought that once this time would come, she would feel like she was a new and different person. Over the years, she had built sex up to be such a Big Deal and that was why she had decided to put the breaks on with the blokes of her past. She hadn't had that many boyfriends, but she had certainly had boyfriends (and the occasional boy that was a friend) that wanted to take that step, but they had never seemed right. Pepper, though? Pepper seemed right. No, Pepper was right. And when her gaze lifted up to meet his and she saw that look of concern on his face, she couldn't help but think that maybe she did feel at least a little different. But, it wasn't the earth moving sort of different she had been expecting. She just felt an incredible affection toward him that she hadn't expected when he first asked her out in the journals all those weeks ago. And then, to see the concern, it just drove it home. This was a good thing. A scary thing, but definitely good. "I'm fine," she replied quietly, turning just a bit to reach her hand up. Her fingers pushed back his hair and she quirked a little smile. "Promise." "Okay," he said just as quietly, smiling at her and shifting in the bed slightly. The light from the lamp in the corner made her face sort of glow. Sex like this was weird. In all the experiences he'd had in the past, sex had been some funny thing, sort of like a joke. Sure it could be hot and all that, but there was a different sort of feeling hanging in the air between them. It wasn't a one night stand, or a fling, or... well. A clandestine love affair. It was something he wanted with Effie, and just Effie, and for as far into the future as he could see right now. "You look beautiful, you know." Effie's smile grew - how could it not if he was going to go and say something like that? - and she leaned up for a gentle kiss. She could feel the same thing as him, thinking that it really was something sort of special. It wasn't really something that she should put her finger on or even name, but it felt so very right. She didn't want that feeling to go away and she really, really hoped that it wouldn't. As a matter of fact, she was certain that she'd do everything she could to keep it. "You're sweet," she murmured after laying back down, that smile still on her lips. "So sweet, in fact, that I don't think I really deserve you. But, I'm okay with being selfish this time around." "You don't deserve a smart mouth little shit disturber?" Pepper asked with a grin, nuzzling against her bare shoulder before kissing her skin softly. "I know I'm incredibly attractive but I didn't realize that my good looks were literally blinding." Effie laughed quietly, her head turning just a bit to keep her eyes on him. "I think that you're the one that's all blinded," she replied, raising a challenging eyebrow. "See, you're missing how you're sweet, as I previously mentioned, and you're charming and have a fantastic sense of humor." Reaching down, she tilted his chin up to steal another kiss. "Oh, and you're a fantastic kisser." She paused for just a moment, then gave him a tilted smile. "Do you want me to continue singing your praises? I think that I could." "Well, as much as I enjoy having my ego-stroked..." Pepper said, returning her kiss and then adding a few more of his own for good measure. He turned on his side, slinking his hand and arm across her bare stomach, pulling her closer to him. He tickled her side lightly. "You know, Effie, I think I've figured it out. I must have done something really fucking epic in a past life." "You think so?" Effie asked, her own hand snaking around his back as she turned onto her side to face him. It was rather nice to hear a bloke say something like that to her. The best she usually managed was when a bloke told her how she ought to try out his broom when she went to a pub. That was also, incidentally, one of the reasons she avoided wizarding pubs. "That's so very nice of you to say. What do you think you might have done?" "I have no idea. Slayed some dragons. Robbed the rich and gave to the poor?" Pepper kissed her again. "Saved some kittens from trees, and some babies from burning buildings, and then, you know. Found a cure for every illness in the world but the governments got together and hushed it up and sent me to live with the monkeys in Africa where I was eventually eaten by a rogue, mutated elephant." "You poor thing," Effie replied, an oh so very sympathetic look on her face after such a tragic tale. Then, deciding that she ought to be able to fish for compliments if she wanted to, she raised her eyebrows and smiled. "Was all that worth it if it means you'd end up with little old me?" Pepper made a pfft noise, looking affronted. "'Little old you', Effie? You mean, gorgeous, fascinating, delicious--" he punctuated the word with a nip at the skin at her neck "--intelligent, talented... any other adjectives you want me to throw in there?" he teased, squeezing her side. "Awesome. You forgot awesome," Effie supplied, obviously requiring another kiss for that sentiment. The entire night had felt incredibly good, but there was something about just laying there with him, sharing little kisses and touches, that made her smile. It felt so nice. When she fell back into the pillows, though, she put on a particularly thoughtful face. "I would also approve of voluptuous, even if that might be pushing it a little bit." Laughing, Pepper said, "I will make you a t-shirt that has voluptuous written right across your ta-tas in big block letters. And on the back it'll say 'Property of Pepper, so fuck right off.'" He paused then, tracing shapes on her stomach and sighing with some contentment. "Will you stay for the rest of the night? Or will you catch shite from your folks?" "I'll definitely catch shite," Effie sighed, glancing once toward the door as though her dad was about to run in and give a very stern lecture. She really didn't want to leave and was rather disappointed when she thought about how she was definitely going to need to. All the more reason she needed to move out - which was something that she could actually smile about when she thought of it. "But, hey. Less than a week until I get to move into my shiny new flat. Promise me you'll help christen it?" "Oh, I think I could manage to give you a hand, yeah," Pepper said with a wry smile, hugging her a little more tightly because he didn't want her to leave. The bed might've been one lump away from being no more comfortable than sleeping on a pile of beach rocks, but it was all hardly noticeable with Effie there all warm and smiling beside him. "Probably won't see you until Friday. Night shifts. Total rubbish." "Total rubbish," Effie concurred, happy to turn in closer to him and get more cozy. "But, then again, I reckon that someone has to be there to save the day one patient at a time, right? I think that I'm just lucky enough to have such an important bloke." "Yeah, yeah," Pepper said dismissively, resting his head back against the pillow and shutting his eyes. "You're a quidditch star and I'm a healer and we're both very awesome. Together we make the centre of the universe. If we do a quiet break-up, there'll be a crack in the atmosphere. If we have a dramatic, terrible break-up, then the world will explode. Stay for a little longer? I could bribe you with... more of my attention?" He peaked an eye open and stuck his tongue out at her. "See?" Effie laughed, propping her head up on one of her hands as she looked down at Pepper. She reached up with her free hand to push her fingers through his hair. "I think I could be very easily bribed to stay. Mum and Dad go to bed early, so they won't miss me if I come home late. They would only start having a conniption fit when I wasn't there for waffles in the morning." "Mmm, waffles," Pepper murmured, closing his eyes again as touched his hair. He could definitely get used to this. Her touch, her smile, her putting up with his being an obnoxious twit... he wasn't sure, at that moment, if there was anything better than laying naked in bed with your bird, talking about hypothetical waffles. "Mmhm," Effie murmured in reply, leaning down to place a soft kiss right on the edge of Pepper's mouth before giving him another more square kiss. Waffles were great topic of conversation in most circumstances, but rather than continuing that line, she dropped down and cuddled close up next to his side, her cheek resting right on his chest. It had been an exhausting night - physically, but also mentally. Not that she was about to complain, though. In fact, Effie was nearly positive that if things continued along this track, well. She really hoped that they would. |
