After waking up much too early for the morning after a late-night, especially one spent out at a wedding for a large portion of the evening, Greta had wandered back home, completely spent. One of these days, she knew she would need to have a talk with her father about her "responsibilities" at home. Although she was still young and could bounce back quickly from nearly anything he threw at her, she didn't know how much more she could take. Between the job she was actually being paid for, spending time with her friends and now her boyfriend, it seemed unreasonable to her to be expected to fit in all of the same household chores when she wasn't even living there. She hadn't quite figured out how to say it yet, so that, coupled with her guilty conscience for leaving her parents hanging, meant she was out the door bright and early and back by mid-morning. "Anyone up?" she called out, not loud enough to wake anyone (or so she hoped), but loud enough to get Addie's or Meredith's attention if one of them was up and about. She headed directly for the kitchen to deposit the bags she had over her shoulder. "Brought food home from my mum." It was so nice, she thought as she opened up the refrigerator to start putting a few blocks of cheese away, to have their own kitchen, their own little house. More than anything else so far, it was having their own place to live that made Greta really feel grown-up. It was a few moments before Adelaide strode into the room, fully dressed and dirty from tending to her horses at home. She dropped her bag on the floor next to the door and headed for the kitchen, intending to ravage the refrigerator before heading off to get ready for church in an hour. Seeing Greta there gave her a tiny bit of a start; she was unused to anyone being around, much less wide awake. "Hey. You know, we should wear little bells so we know when the other is in the room," Addie joked, heading straight for one of the stools at the counter. Plopping her head on her hands, she watched as Greta handled food. "Oh goodness, is that your mum's breakfast? Because I am starving. Loki thought it would be funny to run away whenever I tried to harness him, and you know how skittish he can be sometimes. Gave me a good kick in the chest -- well, not really for him, but it was enough to wind me. Thus -- " she gestured down to her dirty shirt and trousers "--the mess." Greta laughed and looked back over her shoulder at Addie, rolling her eyes. "Not a bad idea, actually. Each bell can make its own special sound, one for each of us!" Or, she thought, they could just get used to having other people around. It was just the first week, and she had a feeling that soon enough, they'd be used to having a full house. "It is! I thought you and Mere would want some, so I made Mum give me extra," Greta replied, pulling a tin full of eggs, bacon, vegetables, sausages, out of the bag and setting it on the counter in front of Addie. "I think she's worried we're not going to eat at all. She'll probably make your mum come check up on us, just to be sure." Wincing, she pulled a face, wrinkling her nose up a little at the thought of being kicked by a horse. She knew how that felt. "You all right? Aside from the mess?" she asked, even though she knew that Addie was just fine. "Yeah, nothing I can't handle," Addie answered with a smile. Shoving herself off the stool, she went to the cupboards. The first thing she'd done -- after setting up her bed, of course -- was to put away all the kitchen items. It was too hard to cook and bake in a boxed up kitchen, even if the three girls had been drinking. It was for that very reason that Addie looked confused as she pulled out a horse shoe from between a stack of plates.Turning around, her eyes narrowed as she appraised it. "Huh. This goes in my bedroom on the wall. Wonder how it got in here." It was her first horse, Bessie. Merlin bless her, she'd only died two years ago after being bitten by an adder. With a shrug, she returned to getting plates down for the three of them, though she wasn't sure if Greta had already eaten yet. Never could tell. She might have decided to skip out as soon as possible to get back to her own house. "So.." Addie started, trying not to smile. "Bones looked Eff-Ay-Ay-Eff." While Addie was getting out the plates, Greta found the utensils, thinking about how easily they all seemed to be settling into new patterns. She had to admit she'd been a bit worried that it wouldn't work out, but everything seemed to be fine so far. And luckily, she was hungry, too. She'd eaten a bit earlier that morning, but not enough, and just the thought of what her mum had packed away for them was making her stomach grumble. "He always looks it," Greta pointed out, her cheeks turning pink, "but he's really not all better yet, after what happened at work on Monday. I feel so awful for not being able to do anything to help him out." She sighed, leaning against the counter near the sink. There was no point in dwelling on that, but she still felt a bit useless. "I'm his girlfriend, did you hear?" she continued, "I thought I was going to die right there on the spot." After Addie's experience with Remus, Greta had been even more reluctant to put any sort of label on her and Benjy, but if he didn't mind, she didn't either. "From happiness, I hope," Addie answered, pulling off the top of the tin and loading her plate with everything from eggs to beans to toast. No point in pretending she was going to just take a little bit. Meredith was going to have to get up earlier if she wanted to beat Addie and Greta to the breakfast punch. Licking her finger, Addie hurried to the refrigerator for some juice. She was simply too hungry to wait for tea. She'd have to get into the habit of making it before she went off to her parents' house and put a nice warming charm on it. "People are so..." Weird? Strange? "Fucked up. Between shitty vaults and arses attacking children and Muggles, I wonder if we shouldn't just be eliminated. I get wanting to keep things safe, but that's overkill. Beyond-kill. Monstrously so. But you really had no idea he was going to introduce you as his girlfriend? You hadn't even talked about it?" "Of course from happiness! I'd be a fool to not be happy." She did feel guilty for having something to be happy about when other people were suffering or hurt or dying, but if she didn't try to find some happiness in her life, she wasn't sure how she'd be able to handle all of the sad things. Although Addie might not have wanted to wait for tea, Greta didn't have much to do for a while -- no church to get to soon -- so she pushed herself away from the counter to start tea for herself. "I know. I wish I knew whose vault it was so I could write them a Howler for doing that to him. Or go shove them into it so they'd know what it felt like." She shook her head. "No, not a clue. I didn't want to talk about it, not after..." She looked over at Addie with a sad expression on her face. Addie would know what she meant by that -- that she hadn't wanted to risk it after how Remus had reacted. "I didn't -- I don't want to scare him off. Not that you did that with... because he was just a big ol' prat. Sorry." Adelaide shrugged, dipping her toast into her beans. It took her a moment to pick up on the conversation since she was busy shovelling food into her mouth, then downing orange juice. She wiped her mouth on a napkin. "Guess I just drew the short straw. You. Mere. Benjy. Barty. Someone had to get it. Better me than, Mere. She's a screamer. We'd never hear the end of it." Perhaps her new-found non-sensitivity on the subject was attributed to another B-word: Boyd. Just thinking about him then warranted a giggle and a sudden hand over her mouth in the hopes that Greta hadn't noticed it. While Addie ate, Greta spooned food onto her own plate, pulled a stool up and sat down across the counter. She was happy that her own love life was actually going well, and that Meredith's budding romance with Barty was as well, but Addie deserved to be happy too. "I wish none of us had, honestly, because --" Unfortunately for Addie, Greta had noticed. She grinned, perking up noticeably. "At least you've got Boyd," she said in a sing-song voice, remembering how they were dancing the night before at the wedding. Addie might have had rotten luck with Remus, but maybe Boyd would be better. "Addie and Boyd, sittin' in a tree..." "Shut up," Addie grumbled, though it didn't sound angry at all. Her face turned pink, her food forgotten for the moment. Blinking away the giddiness, she clamped her hand over her mouth for only a second while she composed herself. Next moment, she opened her mouth while Greta was eating. "Did you see his new haircut? So much better than the old floppy mess. He just totally planted a snog on me, too! I didn't even have to do anything! Well, I mean, I was ranting about how Remus never did any of those impulsive things, and then he just did it." Addie paused for a breath, a serious look on her face. "I think he might be mental after all the shite I've put him through." Luckily, Greta knew her friend well enough to know when Addie was serious -- or not serious, for that matter, and she wasn't at all offended by being told to shut up. Instead, she concentrated on breakfast, not hiding her grin at all. Maybe Boyd would prove to be less of a prat than they'd originally thought. If it made Addie happy, that was all that really mattered. "He's got to be mental to fancy you," Greta teased, practically beaming by that point. After taking another bite, she turned serious. "I think it's a good sign that he still wants to snog you after all that." The tea pot started whistling, so she pushed herself up to tend to it and pour a cup. "I mean, think about it. No offense, but you sort of did everything you could to make him not like you, and he still wants to snog you? You ask me, you're off to a really good start." "I know! I was a horrible wench," Addie exclaimed wildly, flailing just a bit as she said so. How funny was that? From the moment she'd seen Boyd MacFusty appear in the journals, she'd poked and prodded him until she was sure that he was going to POP and unleash dragon HELL on her. "Which is really quite ironic, because I was absolutely nice to Remus. Boys are so weird." "Maybe he thought you were just playing hard to get!" It was funny how things turned out, with Remus being not as nice as they'd thought and Boyd actually being as much of a prat as they'd thought. Despite how much they were joking around, Greta really was hopeful about Boyd. It took a special sort of bloke to still want to snog a girl after being put through all of that, after being made fun of so often. "He deserved it, though, but as long as he's all right with it... I say go for it. Boys really are weird, though." Addie didn't even know how weird it was, because Greta hadn't told her about the conversation she'd had with Remus. She'd planned on it, but after the wedding, it seemed completely unnecessary. "Just let me know if he hurts you, and I'll kick him right between the legs, okay?" Addie thought about it for a moment, and years later, she'd look back on this conversation and completely laugh her arse off. After polishing off her food and orange juice, she leaned against Greta's shoulder. "You know, I don't think that's even going to be an issue. I've just got a feeling about --" him "-- this." |
