Some three weeks after overturning the part pertaining to the Imperius in the December's ministerial decree allowing Aurors the use of Unforgivables, the Wizengamot reconvened today to vote a second time on the petition, this time turning their attention on the Cruciatus. Three factions were still opposed in this vote, but the result was the same as the first: a victory for Griselda Marchbanks, the elder who sponsored the petition, who was able once more to sway enough elders to her views. "There is no reason that Aurors need to be able to torture anybody," she stated, a view that was not shared by Clark Harris, who was clearly upset to see a few elders from his group vote in favour of the petition. "Torture or not, this is a ministerial decree and we cannot overturn it without undermining the Minister's entire government, her very authority." Ian Cornfield, who leads the group defending Aurors' right to use any curse, even Unforgivables, to defend themselves from the dark wizards they're fighting, shared his disappointment: "It's a shame! We're sending our Aurors out there to catch Death Eaters who never hesitate to use the darkest of magic, but we refused to give them the means to fight back." With this vote, once this is signed into law, the Cruciatus will be once again banned for Aurors, like the Imperius. The last Unforgivable, the Killing Curse, is schedule to go to debate and vote on May 31st. |
