James and Lily had agreed to go for dinner at her father's a while back, agreeing that being he was the only living parent between them, and war was raging, there was no time like the present to pay a visit. They'd arrived at Spinner's End at quarter past four, and had enjoyed a bit of tea before settling in at the dinner table. Mr Evans had toasted to his daughter and son-in-law with congratulations--he was going to be a grandfather twice before the year was even halfway through--and then James blathered on happily about surprising Lily with the nursery for her birthday, his stocking up on enough baby supplies for an entire army of infants, and of how excited he was to teach little Elvendork to play quidditch. Lily had been having a brilliant evening, blushing slightly when her dad rambled on about her still feeling like a little girl to him and laughing at James' antics and tales. Half of the things he said would give her cause to roll her eyes and cover half her face with a hand at the ridiculousness, the other half had her grinning and gazing over at her husband happily if not joining right in to complete his sentences. She loved her dad and she loved James, and having dinner with the two of them was one of the best birthday gifts she could have asked for. She was hesitant to leave, but it was getting late and she'd been exhausting herself plenty for the Order these days. Lily gave her father a tight hug and the man held her longer than normal, rubbing her back slightly. "Thanks for coming over, Lily-love," he told her, drawing back to look down at her. "You need to come around more often. I'm having enough trouble coping with both my daughters being pregnant without it sneaking up on me," he told her, a brow arched similarly to an expression Lily wore when saying something in the same tone. He looked up at James and nodded amiably. "I don't envy you, James... when her mum was pregnant, I think I had a permanent ringing in my ears from her less... charitable moods." Lily looked affronted and shoved her dad's arm light-heartedly. "Dad! I don't scream like Petunia does. Give me a bit of credit!" A smile crept across her lips despite herself though and she turned to take the hand of James' that Sam Evans wasn't reaching out to shake. James returned his father-in-law's handshake firmly and with a snort. "So far so good, sir," he said with amusement, trying (and failing) to picture Lily shrieking in a mood and harassing him for something ridiculous to satiate her hormonal rage. "I have all my limbs, and my hearing. And only five months left. I think I can make it." Mr. Evans chuckled and nodded at James. "Famous last words," he warned light-heartedly with a grin. Lily smiled, secretly very proud to have such a charmer for a husband - not like Vernon, God, she didn't know how her dad could stand supper with the Dursleys. "You two have a good night," her dad said as she slipped on her knit cap and the couple stepped out the front door into the cool February night. After the door closed behind them, Lily squeezed James' hand tightly and leaned up to give him a soft kiss, taking advantage of the peaceful moment after such a great evening. "You are such a gentleman with my dad. Little does he know what a git you really are," she teased, only pulling away an inch to do so. She loved the git and gentleman he was, she had to admit, but she'd resolved long ago that it was partially her job to keep his ego in check. After all, that was something she'd been doing since he'd started trying to chat her up their second year. "Mmm," he murmured, amused, pulling her back for another kiss before his lips broke into a grin. Godric she just looked so beautiful. Still, every single time he held her this close, he couldn't help but marvel at the fact that she was his, all his, his wife and soon-to-be mother of his child. There were moments, like now--her always outstanding green eyes twinkling at his nonsense, and really who wouldn't want to see those eyes light up with laughter--when it all just seemed like a fantastic, borderline-incredulous dream. Especially given how many times over the course of time they'd known one another she'd called him git and sincerely meant it. After a quiet moment, he voiced his thoughts. "You know. You look gorgeous right now." Lily gazed up at him, a slight blush coming over her cheeks. She was used to compliments from James, he'd been trying to charm her since school, but it was always in quiet, intimate moments that she finally felt a bit bashful, because really, there was no getting more genuine than that. And lately, when she felt frazzled and stressed and knew she was gaining weight quickly, the fact that he still found her gorgeous was all the more appreciated. It was nice to hear. "You're not so bad yourself, all cleaned up to visit the In-Law," she said with a soft smile, straightening his coat for him. As much as she'd have liked to savor the quiet moment, Lily knew it'd be awkward if her dad looked out the front porch to see them still there. They had a whole house to themselves, they might as well utilize it. But it was a nice night. "Want to walk down the block, then we can duck around the corner to apparate home?" she asked, slipping a hand in his once more. "Sounds like a good plan to me," James agreed easily, taking her hand in his and leading them as they walked down the porch steps, out of the front garden and onto the street. It was a comfortable sort of crispness, James watching his breath coming out in clouds as they went, light snow crunching under their shoes. "Wireless when we get home? I'll make some popcorn. They might be playing one of those murder-mystery theatre things." The redhead grinned over at him. "Popcorn sounds brilliant and not too explosive," she started, pretty much having not let up on teasing him over the pudding incident since it happened. Lily mused about the wireless. "If they don't have a good program on, we can always turn to the underground station and entertain ourselves for the evening?" she offered, a smirk spreading across her lips as they made their way down the sidewalk, her old neighborhood quiet aside from one car that passed by. The plan had been simple. They were to show up at the house, take care of the Potters and the girl's father in one quick, easy task. There would be no torture, there would be no excessive use of violence. It would be a quick job because there was no need for that nonsense. Despite the fact that Augustus normally tried to keep it to himself that he thought that part of being a Death Eater that his peers seemed to embrace was excessive, he was in charge of this little mission and they were going to do it his way. It should have been easy. Of course, he hadn't counted the notion that they would decide to leave the house early and that was exactly what they stumbled upon as they appeared appeared on the street. A string of cuss words went through Augustus's mind. This wasn't part of the plan. Why couldn't they have just been predictable and stuck with the plan he had made? But, he couldn't lose his head. He was in charge here. A second passed, then he said to Lucius and Dylan, "Go, go - go." Lucius steadied his head nearly before stilling his feet after apparition. Though he would never admit, he liked the plan. It was simple, and far too often did the Death Eaters seem to revel in their discord sown. They would be in, and out, before they were missed and before anything could be done for the Potters and their less than reputable in-laws. They had expected, of course, another few moments of organization before engaging the group, but as Augustus' hushed whisper prodded the masked trio into action, any further discussion was cut off. Lucius leapt into the fray, aggressively drawing his wand. He was a sharp, classical duelist, experienced in school and sharpened through frequent lessons with Nott. Their first goal, if they came in shooting, was disabling their biggest threat, and that was of course, the full-blooded wizard. "Vacuus Manus." The wizard hissed the spell, gesturing crisply at James Potter. It was a difficult spell, perhaps stretching Lucius' abilities, but in the moment, he was confident it would work. One couldn't fight if they couldn't hold a wand. Dylan was likely the only one from the bunch that would have preferred a bit of time to torture and maim his victims, so long as he knew they'd be debilitated earlier on. However, he didn't dare complain and just followed Augustus' lead. He was in charge, which meant the orders must have come through the Inner Circle. Dylan would never question them. When they landed, he heard Augustus's commands and reacted immediately. Following Lucius' hex came Dylan's own from his wand, a Blasting curse, also aimed at the blood traitor first. James was about to reply to Lily--a lazy grin stretching across his features--when he felt the prickle of magic in the air. "Lils--" he started, smile dropping, stopping on the sidewalk and peering into the darkness, concerned. His fingers went to grip his wand just as the light of the jelly-fingers jinx came barreling toward them. James' first instinct was to push Lily out of the way of the curse, then hastily he threw up a shield charm. The jinx was barely deflected, but the blasting hex crashed right through the shield, throwing James back and through the white-picket fence lining Mr Evan's neighbors front garden, where he crashed bodily into the flower box under the window. He didn't allow himself time to register the pain of the impact, or to waste anymore time appraising the situation. He leaped to his feet and in quick succession cast, "Battuo! Stupefy!" as he ran back toward Lily. The first spell flew in Lucius' direction, the other, Dylan's. Lily froze as soon as James did, drawing her wand and looking in the opposite direction. They hit so fast though, James was flying by her before she had too much time to react. She stumbled back as well, before spinning back toward their assailants and throwing up a strong shield in front of her. "JAMES!" she shrieked, seeing the figures move toward them - 1, 2... maybe another? "Expelliarmus!" she called out, flicking her wand and stepping backward against the fence. "Incarcerous!" They were here, after them, here just for them - it was all Lily's fault, she knew it, but she forced herself to stay steady as she glanced back for James. Finally, Augustus stepped forward into the fray, his wand at the ready. He was fairly certain that Dylan and Lucius would be sufficient in apprehending the Potters on their own, but this was one that he knew that he had to have a hand in. Dobbs? He was happy to have not had to be apart of that. This, though? This was more his style. "Stupefy!" he shouted from behind his mask, his wand aiming toward Mrs. Potter. It made him cringe a little to think that the girl was pregnant, but orders were orders. Lucius Malfoy threw up a shield charm in reaction as quickly as he could manage, but it was not quite quickly enough to block the pummelling hex. Even as the wind was knocked out of him by the invisible forces, the shimmering shield shot from his arm, deflecting the incarcerating charm. The woman was not using anything near as offensive as her husband, but if the witch intended to incapacitate and disarm them, the fight would be far more evenly matched. So they would have to take out the natural enemy first. The masked Death Eater doubled over, taking a second to protect his breath as he shot off an offensive spell. With Potter knocked down, the fists would dissipate on their own. Hopefully, soon. Lucius Malfoy was used to spells, but physical violence had never been something he easily absorbed. He didn't have the attention for the swiftest solution, but there was always more than one answer with magic. "Defodio!" Lucius centered himself through the pummeling and lashed out with an architectural spell at the redhead. Women, Dylan thought, with a mental roll of his eyes, while his actual eyes were too busy focused on their victims. Lucius took the spells while Dylan managed to duck out of the way. But while his colleagues' attentions were on Potter, his eyes turned toward the bird. It's how fools in love worked -- incapacitate the woman, and the bloke's attention diverts for her sake. "Extensio," he said, throwing out the Racking Curse at her before quickly tossing a Gouging spell after that at her husband. Some recess of James' brain was screaming PANIC, PANIC, PANIC!, especially as all the Death Eaters began aiming the majority of their attacks at Lily, but he focused himself. She was pregnant, and above all else he had to make sure that she got out of this; that Lily and their baby stayed safe. Lucius' spell he deflected with a whip of his wand, causing it to blow up a nearby postbox, while Dylan's nicked his shoulder, a chunk of skin, jacket and tshirt casting off behind him. It stung and started bleeding immediately, and James tried to ignore the oozing sort of warmth that was already spreading. Quickly he shot "Alerte Ascendare!" in Dylan's direction, "Confringo!" in Lucius', and then "Vacuus Mens!" right at Augustus. Moving closer to Lily, he cast an area shield charm, to protect them both. Lily had a panic when the words of the Racking curse reached her ears, the memory of having her limbs pulled in all directions at the ball and her baby- there wasn't much time to react though and she ducked behind James' shield in time to avoid have the stunner be deflected, but Dylan's curse caught her left wrist and she felt the bones there powerfully yanked apart before she could pull it in and out of the way with a pained groan. Grimacing and cradling her wrist close to her chest, she pointed her wand toward the Death Eaters. She was better at defense, but this wouldn't work with only James on the offensive. They couldn't beat them three to two, being taken by surprise, could they? So Lily focused on the same one James' had shot his last spell at. A mental spell, so Lily followed suit: "Confundo! Petrificus Totalus!" she shouted, seeing the blood pouring down James' arm. They needed to focus fire, taking one out would make it easier - they had to get away, get back to her dad. As much as he might have wanted to, Augustus couldn't manage to miss all three of the spells. The Jelly-Brain he could duck, but the Confundus hit its target. The only plus side was the sudden confusion that washed through his brain and showed completely on his face was enough for him to stumble to the side and out of the way of the Body-Bind. His grip tightened on his wand, but Augustus could not for the life of him concentrate enough to use it. What was he doing? Where were they? Bloody fuck. Lucius Malfoy finally managed to dispel the pummelling hex. He stood with his cloak obscuring his mask, and moved back towards the pair of Death Eaters. There were two schools of fighting. Perhaps individuals, separate and spread out were safer than a group. Perhaps unity, rather, gave strength--like a Grecian phalanx. While it had not, perhaps, been emphasized to the Death Eaters, the importance of teamwork was how the advantage of three could overpower two--even two such intimately involved victims. But the barrage of spells was near dizzying to follow. Lucius ducked under the spells sent at Augustus, dropping to a knee to shoot back. "Expulso! He shot over his left arm, using it as a sort of physical shield as he aimed the exploding hex at the fence directly beside the pair. He was prepared to follow the explosion with a far more serious curse. The wand's tip tilted sadistically, imperceptibly. "Avada Ked--Ah!" The spell was interrupted by his sleeve bursting into flame. Are you kidding me? Dylan's shield held against the one that Potter had sent toward him. But his colleagues, he saw, were not as lucky -- one confunded and another on fire. Seriously? Under his mask, he gritted his teeth in annoyance, which one strengthened the next few spells he was going to send out. A Gouging spell at the woman this time, straight at her stomach, then a Transmogrification Torture curse at her husband. If Lucius didn't learn to bloody put out his own fire, Dylan was likely going to kill him after killing off the couple. The fence exploded just behind them and Lily didn't have enough time to shield the back of them. She felt herself be launched forward and split pieces of wood dug themselves into her back as she hit the asphalt of the street. Instinctively she reached out to break her fall but her useless hand didn't take the impact of her body weight and she let out a cry of pain as she landed, feeling the pavement rip at her skin as she skidded to a halt. Panic still gripping her, she scrambled to her knees, disoriented, but squinting toward their assailants. "De..." she tried again. "Depulso!" she shouted desperately at the Death Eater not on fire or confunded. Then the gouging charm hit her just below her ribs, ripping though her side. She clutched at the wound with a scream, blood covering her hands, a dizzying agony shooting through her torso. The baby she thought desperately. She had to get through this for the baby. She forced herself to throw up a weak shield charm, and manically tossing stunners in the Death Eaters' direction. All of the colour drained from James' face at the sight of Lily on the ground, at what was happening to her. Panic was quickly contorted to anger and in fast bursts of light, exploding charms shot out of James' wand--tree, fire hydrant, garbage can--and then, for good measure, he transfigured the park bench to his right into a cougar and sent it off in the Death Eater's direction. Up went a shield, covering himself and Lily as he ran toward her. By then, Augustus's mind was back in order and he was angry. This wasn't supposed to be so hard. In fact, this should have been over by now, but instead they were still outside the house and there was a cougar coming at them. For Merlin's sake. Ready to just end this already, Augustus shook his head once to clear it completely before locating another park bench. It was likely that they were just going to keep with the shields, so why not bypass them completely? Locating the nearest that wasn't already turned into a jungle cat, he aimed his wand and jerked it once so it flew quickly through the air toward James. It was not the most heroic action on his part, but the flaming death eater, ducked for cover. Lucius quickly summoned a stream of water from his wand to douse the flames. He was fortunate that his allies' offensive barrage had pushed the Potters onto a panicked defense. Stunners flew like fireworks everywhere but on target. However, the explosions caused by the blood traitor's blasts completed the image with a dangerous flair. Lucius decided to take the defence, hopefully his colleagues would pick up the hint--afterall James and Lily Potter only needed two killing curses. Though it was not his forte, Lucius Malfoy cast as strong a barrier as he could manage against the shrapnel from the metal.... whatever it was that had exploded nearest to them. "Kill them already." Dylan could have done that. He had one aimed, particularly at Potter first, since his attention would be pretty much divided between keeping them alive and trying to keep his wife with him. Dylan smirked to himself, pleased at how much damage the hexes had inflicted on her. The only reason the Killing Curse didn't come out right away was the fact that he was busy disintegrating whatever the fuck Potter was throwing at him, save for the last one that slammed into his shoulder hard, causing him to wince and let out a swear. On one hand, it gave him the chance to quench the urge for a torture play before killing them. But on the other, he was quickly getting bored of this that he preferred to just head home for a pint. "Incarcerous," Dylan muttered, aimed at them, hoping it would bind one at least. Before James made it to Lily, Augustus' hurtled bench barreled right into the distracted Gryffindor, catching him at the legs with considerable force and sending him flying backward about six feet, and into a telephone pole. James slumped down, groaning, his right leg twisted at an odd angle from the combined force of the bench hitting him and him hitting the pole. Lily seemed farther away from him still, but he dragged himself upward, limping toward her determinedly. His sailing through the air had saved him from Dylan's binding charm, at the least, and before casting another shield he set a seething "Flagrante," on what was left of the destroyed fence, followed by "Oppugno!" It went sailing in Dylan's direction. Lily's vision was blurring and her head spinning from the loss of blood, her entire side feeling as if it were on fire. Clenching her jaw, she tried to scoot backward away from their attackers. Now they were focused on James, probably figuring her down for the count, but Lily wasn't about to give in to the darkness that started to creep into the edges of her mind just yet. She couldn't, not with James being attacked - she let out a yelp when seeing him flying backward and turned two summon the rest of her strength for another volley of spells. "Obscuro!" she called, aiming at James's target (she hoped), "Confringo!" Lily's voice was starting to get desperate and weak now, unable to hold herself in much of an upright position. She felt herself fall back, hair and cap not being much of a cushion for her head against pavement, but the concussion was numbed against the pain and heart-gripping fear that her baby was gone, or that James wouldn't make it. All Lily could think of to do was will one last shield charm from her wand toward her husband before her green eyes rolled back into her head and she was out. Dylan only managed annoyance at his curse missing the opponent for a split second before he suddenly saw a flash of fur. The ruddy over-sized cat! His attention averted to getting rid of it before it could pounce him on, blasting it away easily. Except if he had let it pounce, the chunks of fence flying at him wouldn't have hit him as unexpectedly as they did. The sharp remnants impaled him, two in the stomach, one in the shoulder. Within a second, his luck had turned around, and he was down. It took him several seconds to feel the pain, but he didn't really have that long before the cougar attacked again, sinking its teeth into his thigh. With both their positions on the ground, the bird's Blasting spell hit him easily (though the blind-fold was off) as well as the cougar that detached, though not before taking out a good portion of muscle from his leg. Fuck, was all Dylan could manage to think before the pain overwhelmed him and his wand arm dropped from the lack of consciousness, saving him from sending Lily Potter a Killing Curse. Oh, fuck, James thought, terrified as he made his way toward her as quickly as he could manage, leg protesting painfully. He got to her and pulled her upward, praying to every God and deity in the earth, water and sky to not let him splinch the two of them. He had to get her to St Mungo's. Quickly he cast a patronus--Sirius and Remus would have to check in on Mr Evans--and as the silver stag galloped off in the distance, James gripped Lily tightly, turned on his heel, and with a pop they were gone. Fuck. Fuck! Augustus didn't even bother trying to inspect the spot or anything pointless like that. They were gone, they weren't dead, and he was going to catch hell from Caracatus. "We need to leave," he pointed out, knowing it was obvious. "Before the Ministry gets here." Lucius surveyed the scene, his own heart falling as their promise of easy glory so effortlessly disapparated. It had hardly been easy, in truth, neither the fight nor the exits. The Potters had put up an unexpectedly good fight, but that was hardly an excuse that would fly with the Inner Circle. It would be easy to pop into the muggle house and finish the job on the mudblood's relations so that they would at least have something to show for the night, but Augustus was right. Time was of the essence and Selwyn was out for the moment. "We'll go back to your home. I'll leave from there." It was a statement from the youngest of the the trio that was scarcely awaiting a reply as he bent down to loop one of Dylan's arms over his shoulder. He could apparate with Dylan but closer ranges would be better and Wiltshire was some distance off. It was luck, or experience, that Lucius looked over where Dylan had fallen. He was double checking that nothing had fallen. It wouldn't do to leave anything, anyone, or their parts at the scene. A wand, even made of wood, always stood out against a pile of tinder, and likewise caught the death eater's eye. He gestured with his own wand, summoning it with a spell to his free hand and was ready. Following Augustus' suit, he and the unconscious Dylan Selwyn disapparated. |
