Prologue: Life After Lost
Dominic looked around at his LA apartment…his permanent home base. Three years in living in Hawaii and now he was back in busy LA and it was like a culture shock. He’s been back for a week now, just settling in and getting used to the pace again. Hawaii was such a laid back place. Everything moved at a slow pace. You can walk across a busy street and take your time doing so, and not even have to worry about getting hit by a car. No one was in a rush to get to the next meeting or to the supermarket…that was if you weren’t a Lost actor on the way to the work. Even he was guilty of speeding a number of times. Luckily, that was the only thing he was guilty of. No DUI’s for him.
But that hadn’t stopped the writers from writing him off the show…something he had mixed feelings about. On one hand, he was sad to leave. He had made some good friends on the show. Josh, Jorge, Evangeline, Terry…just to name a few. He had enjoyed hanging out with Jorge and the scrabble tournaments they had on breaks. He’ll miss Josh’s dinner parties, and Evangeline’s company. He’ll miss going to Terry for advice. If there was a man he respected on the same level as Ian McKellen, it was Terry O’Quinn. The man was a true gentleman and a brilliant actor. He had enjoyed all their scenes together…even the Locke punching Charlie scene. Then there was the part of him that was relieved. For the past two years, it seemed as if the writers didn’t know what they were going to do with Charlie. He would cool his heels by spending days on end at the beach surfing, while waiting for the writers to finally give him something to do. Only this past season, when he had put his foot down and finally gave them an ultimatum did they decide to give him work. Sadly, it was the last work he’ll do as a regular on the show. He had hoped to be one of the main characters of the show…that his status would remain as good as it had been in the first season, when David Fury and JJ Abrams were in charge. But now…he barely recognized the show. It wasn’t the same show he had started out on two years back, and he was relieved to be leaving now before the show completely jumped the bloody shark. At least he had gotten Charlie an heroic end…perhaps the most heroic death on the show. He couldn’t ask for more than that.
His time on Lost may be over….but his career sure wasn’t. His agent was already on the phone with producers and directors and sending him scripts. Right now, Lost was still hot and even though underused, he was still one of its stars. Work should not be at all hard for him to come by. That was another thing. The show did do one thing. It had gotten him out of the hobbit image, which was exactly what he had wanted. Now it was just a question of what to do next? What role to take? One door had closed. Now it was time to open another…
The ring of the doorbell is what startled Dominic out of his thoughts. Frowning he got up and headed for the door. Who could this be? He hadn’t told anyone that he was going to be in LA just yet. He had wanted to spend a few days alone, just getting used to being an out of work actor in the city of angels once again. He really wasn’t in the mood for friend’s lame attempts to cheer him up when he didn’t really need it. This wasn’t like that dark time after rings. This was something all together different…
“Whoever it is, I don’t want any!” He called out as he slowly ambled his way to the door. “You caught me at a bad time and….” All words trailed off when he opened the door to the one person he wanted to see most, but had thought it’d be a good few weeks before he saw him again. “Lijah?”
Elijah Wood stood in the hallway with sunglasses hiding his famous blue eyes and a bright grin parting his lips. He didn’t know how well his arrival would be received. The last time he had talked to Dominic, his lover had been drunk and lamenting about his departure from Lost. He was expecting to find a depressed man, drinking himself silly, but he was relieved to find this Dominic. Sober and alert and surprised to see Elijah standing at his door.
“Hey…”
“Hey…I’m sorry…I’m just a bit surprised. Usually we plan our meetings and…” Dominic couldn’t help but stare. There was nothing and no one he loved more than the young man standing in his doorway. He and Elijah had begun their love affair years ago…when they were in New Zealand and deep into filming the Rings movies. Despite the rumors, they had managed to keep their romance a secret. Not because of their careers…well…that was a part of it….but mostly because it was really no one’s business but their own. As far as they both were concerned, they paid their dues by doing their jobs and attending awards shows, and conventions, and being kind to fans and putting up with the paparrazzi. Their private private lives with each other, though…that was purely off limits, and that’s the way they’ve kept it…of course, with the help of Pamela, Elijah’s lady friend and Evangeline…who he really was just friends with…but the media kept insisting on making rumors about them.
Elijah’s smile was gentle and as always, made Dominic melt instantly. “I know, you weren’t expecting me…but…well…I thought I’d surprise you…”
“Well you succeeded. I am,” Dominic wrapped his arms around Elijah in a warm hug, pulling him into the apartment. He held him tight, breathing him in. His moments with Elijah were too few and far in between. He was going to change that, now that Lost was over. He loved this man so much; it threatens to burst out of his chest at times. “But pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t expecting to see you for a few more weeks.”
“I know…but I have some time off and…well…with you being back in LA for good now…I decided why not.”
“Well I’m glad you’re here. We can do whatever you want. Go to clubs…go to the grove…anything…”
Elijah giggled. “How about we stay in for now and just enjoy each other, yeah? I keep hearing about you and scrabble…I want in on that…”
“Ah, so you’ve heard about the famous scrabble tournaments?”
“Who hasn’t? They’re always on the Lost blogs and magazines and websites…and I saw that interview with Conan. Tsk, tsk Dom.”
Dominic could only stand there and be amused at the monster he had created. There was no bigger Lost fanatic than Elijah. He remembered when there were constant texts from Elijah, exclaiming over each and every twist the show took. So it came to no surprise that his lover would know everything that was ever said about the scrabble tournaments that he and Jorge had.
“All’s fair in love and scrabble. So what brings you back to LA, anyway?”
Elijah’s playful expression softened into one of sympathy. “Well…I just saw the season 3 finale…”
“Oh…”
“Why didn’t you fucking tell me, Dom? I should have been the first person you told.”
Dominic smiled. “I couldn’t, love. You know that. For one it was a big secret and they have us under contract not to tell…and another, I didn’t want to spoil you. You’d have killed me if I had…”
“But still…it must have been hard for you and I could have helped…”
Touched by Elijah’s concern, Dominic placed a gentle hand at the side of his face. “I was fine. Really. It was a mutual decision. They couldn’t find a story for me and I was sick of being bored in paradise. Especially when I could have used that time on my hands spending time with you instead…besides, the show had done its job. It showed that I can be something other than a hobbit.”
“Well, I’m still going to miss trying to tackle information out of you,” Elijah grinned, pulling Dominic into a long, sensual kiss that he knew made Dominic melt every time.
Dominic smiled against Elijah’s lips, pulling the younger man closer to his body. “Well you can tackle me for other things now…and now that I’m back in LA…I’m yours indefinitely…”
Elijah wrapped his arms around Dom, enjoying being so close to his lover, and the knowledge that now they didn’t have to rush. Before, Dominic always had a plane to catch, somewhere to b e to promote the show. But now there was no show to promote. Elijah no longer had to share him with the suits of ABC. Now he had his wonderful Dominic all to himself for however long he wanted and he was going to make good use of the fact. Pulling away, he suddenly remembered what he had brought with him. Giggling, he grabbed his bags and headed for Dominic’s couch, where he plopped his jetlagged body down onto and opened up his suitcase to pull out a leather album with the words New Zealand memories on the cover in gold leathers.
“I brought the album. I didn’t know what mood I’d find you in, and I thought that maybe you could use some warm memories of the fellowship…”
“Well, you certainly know me, don’t you?”
“Of course,” Elijah touched the side of Dominic’s face, his thumb brushing against the bottom lip that he loved to shower with kisses and suck against in moments of passion. “I know how much the fellowship means to you and…well…it’d be the very thing to cheer you up if you were in a dark mood.”
“It still is the thing…” Dominic smiled, taking the leather-bound book onto his lap and opening the book to the midway point, glancing at the memories. “Even when I’m not in a dark mood…”
“Do you remember this Dommie? The day we moved into my guesthouse?” Elijah turned some pages, the memory just coming to him. “I was so fucking nervous that day…”
“You were nervous? I was meeting the family for the first time that night…I was so fucking afraid that your mum was going to hate me…”
“I was afraid Hannah was going to develop a crush on you. She was so fucking fascinated and hanging off of your every word…”
Dominic smiled at the memory. That day had been one of the big moments a relationship goes through. Meeting the family. He had been terrified, but it was needless. Debbie and Hannah Wood had welcomed him with open arms and bright, reassuring smiles. He had charmed them with tales of England and some of the more innocent adventures that he and Elijah had shared in New Zealand. Then that night, he and Elijah had made love in Elijah’s bed and spent the night talking about their hopes and dreams and making plans that never really took place.
“I was fascinated with everything having to do with you.” Dominic smiled. “Remember how we planned a road trip of the US? You were so full of excitement over the idea… “
Dominic panted as he came to rest beside his now exhausted lover. Ever since the first time, he just couldn’t get enough of showing Elijah just how deep his emotions ran for him. There was nothing like being close to Elijah. There was nothing like being with Elijah period. He wanted to do everything with Elijah. Travel. See the world…just be together…no matter what…he may be far from England…but in Elijah’s arms, he was home.
“You’re the best thing about this country,” He sighed, letting his hands slide through Elijah’s hair. “I wanted to travel and see America…but…I feel like I have the best of it right here…”
Blushing, Elijah laughed. “This proves that you haven’t seen enough of the states. I’m going to have to change that…”
Giggling, Dominic pulled his lover into another kiss, letting his lips sensually move against Elijah’s, moaning appreciatively as the young man melted into his embrace. He groaned as Elijah suddenly pulled away, his eyes bright with enthusiasm. A sign that Elijah Wood had yet another big idea that may never come to reality.
“We should change that, Dominic!”
“Huh? This isn’t going to be a ‘we should all buy a house in New Zealand’ idea is it?” Dominic asked, skepticism clear in his voice.
“Fuck you! That was a good idea and you know it! You and Billy just weren’t cooperative is all.”
“Sure,” Dominic snorted, leaning back against the pillows so he could stare at the flawless ceiling. “Ok, maybe I was for it, but I was in the idea of a house for just you and me. Our nest of loooove. Besides, you know it’d never work out. Bills want to be stationed in Scotland and I want to try my luck in Hollywood. The three of us in New Zealand would never have worked out.”
“Stop trying to distract me! I have a fucking awesome idea! Just listen, man!” Elijah’s eyes flashed with annoyance. Yeah, he knew that a lot of his fucking awesome ideas never happened, but this one was plausible! This one they could do! Just him and Dom! “You should see more of the US…we should take a road trip….explore all of the states…”
Dominic looked at Elijah, not believing what he had just heard. Explore the entire United States? He had to be taking the piss. There was no bloody time! The junket will start soon and they’ll be back off to New Zealand and after that, Japan, France, London, New York…plus he imagined such a trip would take a lot of planning. Planning that he just wasn’t willing to do at the moment…
“Lij…it’s a nice idea…but…not possible right now…”
“I know…but…someday. As soon as we’re done with the promotions and award shows. I’m going to show you my country, Dominic. I promise…”
Dominic sighed, touched yet not willing to believe in something that may not happen. Their schedules would probably grow even busier after the promotions. Elijah was already a big star, and most likely, he’ll start receiving offers as well. The reality was that a road trip was going to be impossible to arrange. Their lives were simply too busy…yet he couldn’t dash Elijah’s hope. Looking into those sincere blue orbs, Dominic knew that Elijah wanted to do this…
“We’ll see, baby. That’s all I can say right now. It’d be ace if we could do it…but let’s just file it under things to do.”
“I can accept that,” Elijah grinned brightly, kissing Dominic once again, thinking of how fucking awesome such a trip will be. Just himself and his Dommie. On the open road, seeing all that they could see with all the time in the world to see it in…
“Yeah, but it never really happened. It seemed like everything got so fucking busy after the promoting of Return of the King. I got Everything Is Illuminated and you had just gotten Lost and was off promoting for that…we both were in the public eye…there was no way we could have taken that trip. Too bad that it never happened,” Elijah sighed, flipping through more pages of the album, unaware of the plans forming in Dominic’s mind. “We just never had the time…”
A sly smile curved Dominic’s lips as the thought began to take form. Lost was over for him. He had no plans, and Elijah had no plans at the moment, that he was aware of… “We have time now….”
“What?” Elijah looked at Dominic with wide eyes, trying not to let his tendency to hope and plan without really confirming anything to take over. He’s been burned one too many times. Like the house in New Zealand. He was really looking forward sharing a house with his best mate in one of the most beautiful places in the world, just to be disappointed.
“We have time now. Lost is over for me. I don’t plan on doing any promoting for the show anymore and I have nothing in the works at this time…as far as I know, you’re free. So why not take this time and do what we were planning to do all those years ago?”
“Dominic…I don’t know. Right now is the time for you to read scripts and audition, while Lost, especially your brilliant performance in the last two episodes is in everyone’s minds. It’s not the time to go gallivanting…”
“Lijah,” Dominic interrupted Elijah’s tirade with a small giggle. “It’s exactly the time. Look, you once promised to show me your country. I want to see it now. I insist on seeing it now. Really, do you have anything else in the coming months to do?”
Elijah shrugged and stared at his hands. “No…but still…this isn’t good for your career. You need to hit the irons while the fire’s hot. You’re talented. You deserve the career that’s ahead of you…”
“And it’ll be there when we get back from our trip. Come on Lij….it’s been three years and we hardly got to spend much time together. This is our chance to reconnect. Get to know one another again…to see this great country of yours. Let’s take it while we can. It may be the only chance we get…”
Elijah sighed. He did want to do this. He’d love to be on the road with Dominic. Go from state to state and show him that there was more to America than baseball, cheeseburgers, and apple pie. It’s just that Dom had worked so hard, and now he had a chance for the kind of career he always wanted. Elijah didn’t want to mess that up for him….but if Dominic was sure about this…if he really, with his whole heart, wanted to take this trip and get away from Hollywood and all things having to do with their career…well he was all for it.
“Are you sure about this Dominic? We’ll be gone from Hollywood for a good while. We’ll be on the road and the majority of the states won’t have an ocean to surf in. Do you really want to do this?”
“Hey, surfing isn’t my life you know. I like doing other things…but yes. I’m sure. I want to get away from it all Lij. Hollywood. Questions about Lost. Papparazzi. God, I want to get away from the paps, you have no idea…but most of all, I want to be with you. Let’s just go. Strike out on the road and see what America has to offer.”
Elijah smiled, wrapping his arms around Dominic in a tight hug, his famous giggle filling the room. This was what he had always dreamed. Him and Dominic with endless time to just be together and not worry about the pressures of Hollywood. This trip was what both of them needed, especially after such a long time apart.
“Ok, Dommie. We’ll go. We’ll call our agents and families and make arrangements and then we’ll go. I’ll show you America. Every last inch of it!”
Giggling himself, full of anticipation, Dominic claimed Elijah’s lips in a heated kiss. This trip was going to be…well…fucking awesome! There was so much to experience and Dominic was stoked beyond measure that he was going to experience it with his beautiful Lijah. This trip was just the thing to bring them closer together.
