It’s not that he actually expected anyone to remember. He knew that people were busy, doing their own things. Billy had movies and a band to tend to. His brother was still holding classes in Costa Rica and all of his lost friends had their own worries with the writer’s strike going on. And Elijah…Elijah had his label, but something in Dominic refused to give Elijah a free pass on this one. He was his boyfriend after all. He should be there on his birthday, helping him ring in his 31st year of life. But instead he’s with that band, drowning in the music that he obviously loved more than Dominic.
Sighing, Dom decided to go home. He had spent most of the day, staring out at the beach after a long call from his parents, the only ones that hadn’t forgotten about the day they brought him into the world. He smiled as he remembered his mother’s warning about making sure that the Wood boy ate enough, so he never gets as skinny as he had just a few years ago. Dom still winced and chuckled as he remembered the lectures he received from both of their mothers.
But none of that mattered now. What mattered was that Elijah had forgotten his birthday. Turning the key in the door of the apartment they shared, Dom walked in and blinked in clear surprise at what he found. A candle-lit room and on the table, the most delicious cake he’s seen covered with candles with a bottle of champagne sitting beside it and Elijah, standing behind the table, a soft smile on his lips.
“Lijah? I thought you were off promoting Heloise…”
“What? And miss my Dommie’s birthday? Not a chance,” Elijah grinned, coming around the table to wrap his arms around Dom’s neck. “You didn’t honestly think I’d miss it, did you?”
Dom just blushed and looked down in embarrassment, because he had. He looked back up and grinned, the feelings of sad insecurity leaving him. “I love you.”
“I love you too, now come and blow out your candles,” Elijah giggled, taking Dom’s hand and pulling him to the cake that was lit with candles. “Don’t forget to make a wish!”
Dom just giggled as well and lightly kissed Elijah’s cheek. He knew exactly what his birthday wish was. Closing his eyes and blowing out the candles, Dom wished that they would have many more birthdays to share. That Elijah will be his forever. Smiling into his lover’s eyes, Dom thought that was one birthday wish that was doable.
Summary: Dominic receives a surprise visit from someone special
It had been a good party. His mates had surprised him with a nice party and brilliant gifts. His family had called and he had spent hours talking to them, catching up and making plans to meet soon. His agent had called, gushing about the new roles she had run across for him and he had to admit, they sounded promising. There was only one thing missing from his special day, but he was forcing himself not to think about him. He had promised not to think about him, but somehow he couldn’t help it. His mind ran to his on again-off again boyfriend Sean Bean.
They were a strange pairing. Not one of their friends could understand how they had gotten together and they didn’t actually know themselves. But they somehow made it work. Now Sean was off filming his movie and Dom was preparing to continue filming the last of I Sell the Dead. They had talked over the phone last night, with Sean continuing to apologize for missing Dom’s birthday, and despite his disappointment, Dom had reassured his boyfriend that it was fine. He’ll do something with Elijah that night and they could celebrate when they were both free. He didn’t let on how hurt he was that Sean couldn’t get away to come to him. He just put on that happy Dom grin and made Sean believe that he was ok with the situation.
Now entering his apartment, Dom felt more alone than ever. Elijah had to promote that bloody group he was hosting on his new label and wouldn’t be able to go out with him and everyone else was busy too. It was going to be one lonely birthday.
“Oh stop your moping, love. It’s not that bad,” An achingly familiar voice chuckled as Dom closed the door to his apartment.
Dom’s eyes widened as he saw who it was. “Sean? You made it?”
Sean Bean stood before him with a cupcake with a single candle in the middle. “Happy Birthday Dom.”
“How…?”
“Filmed all through the night…and then took a plane here…to be with you…” Sean smiled, taking Dom into one arm and holding the cupcake up in the other. “Make a wish…”
“It already came true,” Dom smiled, reaching up to press his lips against Sean’s, thankful for this birthday surprise.
