Ran had set things up again, trading shifts with Ken to get the entire day off on Omi's day off, and arranging for foods that were easy to keep and munch on. He'd crawled into bed with Omi the night before, his silk pajamas nearby but not on, and the lightweight sheet covering both of them, trapping the body heat they generated into a warm, contented glow as they slept. And when he woke, late in the morning, his arms were still around Omi, the scent of his lover surrounding him like a delicious fog.
Omi was still asleep, draped in a boneless sprawl that could only be executed by the very young... and cats. It was hard to determine just how the smaller man could take up that much space on the bed, but he managed somehow. His head was resting on Ran's shoulder, lips parted slightly as he murmured unintelligibly and one hand kneaded against Ran's hip in response.
Ran watched him, unwilling to move for the moment as he simply basked. This feeling was incredible, waking with Omi, and holding him. He held it as long as possible, then leaned down, nestling his nose into Omi's hair and breathing in deeply once before kissing the top of his head.
The movement and touch was enought o make Omi stir... but not enough to truly wake him. One hand lifted, batting at Ran for a moment as Omi mumbled softly to himself and rolled to curl up tightly against his lover. He let out a soft trilling murr, lifting his chin a bit so that Ran could see the faint smile on the sleeping boy's face as he leaned into the kiss.
Ran chuckled at that, then began to squirm out from under Omi very carefully, wanting to slip away to the bathroom before the boy woke.
It wasn't difficult to slip out. All it took was a slight shove, and Omi rolled over to grab hold of Ran's pillow, clinging to it tightly and nuzzling against it.
Ran was back in a few minutes, having taken time to rinse his mouth with mouthwash as well. He slipped back into bed, arms immediately moving to draw Omi back to him.
"You'd better go back and bring the Scope, 'cause I have dragonbreath," Omi murmured, keeping his face int he pillow as best he could.
Ran chuckled, pressing another kiss to Omi's hair before moving to get the Scope, as requested. "Here," he murmured, handing it over. "Good morning."
Taking the offered mouthwash, Omi moved to take a gulp and swish it around for almost a full minute before spitting the remains into the empty cup on the nightstand that had contained soda the night before. Well, it was better than swallowing the foul stuff. After that, he held a hand to his mouth and exhaled, testing a second later to see if the Scope had worked. Then, and ONLY then did he turn to Ran and burrow into his arms again, finally facing him fully and smiling. "Good morning," he answered, his words carrying a minty fresh scent.
Ran lifted his head, kissing him warmly before settling back into the bed, slipping under the covers as he wrapped around Omi. "Today's our day," he murmured.
"Huh?" Omi asked, blinking at him in confusion. "You have opening shift today, don't you?"
Ran shook his head, grinning at Omi. "I traded. We both have the full day off. I wanted to take a day just to be with you." He nibbled lightly at Omi's neck, then lay back. "We've got easy food in the fridge, and your coffee set up to brew whenever we finally get out of bed."
"Ooooooohhhh really?" Omi asked, grinning as he moved to crawl over Ran, laying draped on the larger man with his hands folded on his lover's chest. "The whole day? To do nothing but be with you? Sounds perfect to me."
"I was hoping you'd think that," Ran smirked, his hands stroking lazily over Omi's back. "Your back's better finally."
Nodding, Omi arched, catlike into the touch. "It's still twitchy," he said, feeling the rough pads of Ran's fingers tracing over the still healing marks. Some of them would scar, he knew that, but they weren't painful anymore and his back didn't feel like sandpaper, finally. "But it's not sore at all, and I can wear clothes without wanting to strangle someone."
"That's good," Ran nodded, smiling at his lover. "You look like your namesake when you do that, you know that?"
"Do what?" Omi looked to him in confusion, the motion having been so instinctive that he hadn't even realise that he'd been doing it.
"Stretch liket hat. You look like a cat," Ran teased, laughing and ruffling Omi's hair. "Like a pretty little bombay."
Snickering softly, Omi draped over Ran again, putting himself nose-to-nose with the other man. "So all I'd need is ears and a tail, yes?" he asked, the smile remaining on his face.
"We'll have to try it sometime," Ran suggested, the thought of Omi in ears and a tail amusing him. "Maybe halloween this year? You'd look delicious like that."
"Who says I'd want anyone else to see me?" Omi replied, the smirk turning impish. One could almost SEE the tail swishing back and forth as he plotted.
"Point," Ran agreed, reaching out to pet Omi's back again. Now that it didn't hurt him, there was almost a fascination for the healing skin, a need to soothe it and remind himself that it was okay. "But get the costume anyway."
"I will." Omi leaned into the touch again, revelling in the fact that he could be petted again without wanting to smack the hand that was touching him. He had yet to apologise to Yoji, and made yet another mental note to do so. "So..." he began, resting his cheek on Ran's chest and glancing up to the man. "What are we doing today?"
"That's up to you," Ran assured him, smiling quietly. "Do you want to do anything other than just stay here and relax today?"
"Nothing in particular comes to mind."
"Then let's just stay here," Ran suggested, eyes sliding shut as his hand skimmed down to Omi's hip, stroking lightly. "A day to hold you sounds like a pretty good thing to me."
Omi shivered slightly, his gaze focused on the wall as his thoughts began to wander. He really couldn't think of a better way to spend the day, and realised that it wasn't long ago that he wouldn't have been able to say that at all. Had it really been this short a time that they'd been together? He could hardly believe it, and couldn't reconcile the fact that he couldn't imagine being without this safe and warm feeling.
"What are you thinking?" Ran asked quietly, returning to stroking Omi's back lightly. "You're quiet."
"I'm thinking that this all seems so surreal," Omi said, his voice a pale whisper as he tightened his fingers against Ran's chest. "I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and none of this is going to be real. A few months ago, we'd have been waking up alone, and now I can't imagine you NOT being here." As he continued to speak, Omi's words grew quicker, running together almost, as if he were growing more and more aggitated with the thought.
"Omi?" Ran asked softly, frowning a little at the upset. "Omi, it's okay. I'm here," he said, his hands slowing over Omi's back, sweeping across the skin in long, slow strokes to calm Omi more. "Calm down."
"I'm trying to," he answered, clinging to Ran tightly. "I guess I'm just afraid something's going to happen. Something's going to wind up throwing us right back to where we were, and I don't know if I can do that anymore."
Ran rolled, pinning Omi down and lifting his head so that he could stare directly at the boy. "We aren't going back to where we were. I promise. I won't leave you alone."
Omi stared up at him owlishly, biting down on his lower lip. "Promise me again..." he whispered, needing to hear those words.
Ran stared down at him, searching Omi's eyes for a long minute before nodding slowly. "Let's go out today. You and me."
"Where?" he asked, still unsure of all this. He knew that he needed to get his mind off of this, but Omi was still hesitant about getting out from under his lover at the moment.
"I want to get you something," Ran said, pressing light kisses to Omi's eyes. "I want to make sure you understand."
Nodding softly, Omi finally managed to get himself up out of the bed and pulled on what clothes he could find. "Where are we going?" he asked.
Ran watched him for a moment, then moved to get his own clothes on, a slow smirk on his face. "Not telling," he informed the boy. "You'll know when we get there."

They talked quietly on the drive there, Ran still not giving anything away as he twisted and wove through the city streets. He seemed to know precisely where he was going, despite the fact that they were headed away from the Koneko and nowhere near the hospital - the two most visited spots in his past.
Omi's feet tapped against the floorboard of the car as he watched the streets, people and shops pass by. Occasionally, he would glance towards Ran, as if expecting him to give him a clue as to where they were headed... however, the redhead was doing no such thing.
They finally pulled up to a nice, ornate building, and Ran parked, then turned to look at Omi. "We're here," he said softly, holding his breath.
Omi just stared, trying to take all this in. This couldn't be it... it had to be another building and they were just parked in front of this one. Right? "Ran..." he whispered, looking back to his lover. "Which one are we going to?"
Ran looked over at Omi, his eyes solemn. "You asked me to promise you that I wouldn't leave, didn't you?" he asked softly.
Nodding, Omi moved to slide his hand into Ran's, not quite sure where this was going, but afraid to ask, lest he was wrong with the one idea that kept popping into his head. "Yeah... I did."
"We're going to the jewelry shop. We may be two men... but the symbol will still hold, as far as I'm concerned," Ran offered softly.
Omi paled for just a moment, then fumbled with the seat belt. Once he was free, he dove at Ran, throwing his arms around the other man and clinging to him tightly.
Ran held him tightly, eyes closing. "I want you to have something physical, Omi. Something you can look down at any time you're scared, and remember that you're mine, that I want you, always."
Nearly balling up in the man's lap, Omi trembled. "Love you..." he murmured, turning to kiss Ran's neck, regardless of who saw them or stared. He didn't CARE at the moment.
Ran caught his cheeks, holding him still as he kissed Omi deeply, smiling quietly.
The kiss was returned eagerly, slender arms wrapping around Ran's shoulders as Omi clung to him. When he finally managed to pull away, he smiled dizzily, leaning forward until their foreheads touched. "Yours."
"And I'm yours," Ran promised softly, smiling back.
