Aya had never considered the idea of working into her school plans, but she found, oddly enough, that she liked working in the Koneko. The colors in the shop were bright and uplifting, and the flowers always smelled so beautiful. Momoe, who helped to tend the shop, was a grandmotherly sort who mothered Aya as though Aya were her own child. But the best thing about the shop was the framed picture sitting on Aya's bedside table.
The first time she'd seen the picture, it had been laying nestled on a folded orange sweater, both things set at the foot of the bed in the room she'd been given. The woman who had taken her there had called herself Amano, and she'd waited for Aya to sit down, then explained how she knew Aya. By the time the story was done - a story that bore a remarkable resemblance to the tale that Sakura had also shared - Aya was crying softly, her hands clinging to the orange sweater as she stared down at the picture of the four men. That night, and every night since, had found her using the sweater as a nightshirt. It was soft and oversized, dwarfing her. And (she privately thought) it looked far better on her than it had on Ran... if the picture was reliable evidence.
Once she'd gotten settled into the place, Aya hadn't seen Amano again. Momoe took care of her, the two of them going shopping for what they needed and sometimes sharing a meal. Sakura liked Momoe's cat, too. The fat creature was a lazy sort, finding a lap or warm patch of shop and just laying there, looking like she owned the place. And Aya saw Sakura daily, for the two girls went to the same school despite the official age disparity. Aya's coma had left her far behind when it came to her education, something that Sakura never mocked her for. And Aya clung to her friendship with her lookalike, badly needing the connection to the brother she'd lost. They studied each evening, and Sakura often spent a few hours in the shop helping out, but it was her simple stories of the boys - Ran in particular - that kept Aya going.
