"I'm always overtalking around you..."
She says the words and then turns and leaves. There is no goodbye, nothing to indicate that the conversation is anything less than unfinished. And his world has been turned upside down yet again.
If she had forgotten it, she wouldn't have brought it up. Anything that did or did not happen between us... That tells him right there how much she really thinks of things. Because nothing did happen between them, and that is all his fault.
Standing in the labroom, his eyes on nothing as he contemplates her words, he wonders if, perhaps, he made a mistake all those months ago, when he turned her dinner invitation down. He had his reasons. He reminds himself of that nightly. And she certainly seemed to have placed thoughts of him behind her. Nothing had been mentioned since that night. She'd worked with him without incident, and he supposed that he had assumed things were right between them.
Assumptions are always dangerous to make. And hearing her words, and seeing her face, he realizes just how much he still stands to lose if he continues on the path he is on. Perhaps his choice is not yet entirely final, after all.
