[Weiß Kreuz] Mystery
Title: Mystery
Author: Trio Maxwell-Chang
Fandom: Weiß Kreuz
Pairing or POV: Farfarello (about Aya-chan)
The best prey was nocturnal, living and moving in the quiet between dusk and dawn, when most of the world slept. It wasn't the sweetest prey, wasn't the most delicate or delicious. But it was the most challenging, and all the more appreciated for its work. To Farfarello, a true predator by instinct and skill, the best way to lure such prey was to find its weakness... and use it.
That had brought him to her windowsill at first, staring down at her as she slept and contemplating what it might take to draw her brother out. It was why he continued to return at first, watching her sleep in rapt curiosity. She slept without fear in a world where everyone moved in fear. Her brother was afraid. Farfarello could smell the fear lingering around him, like sweet aftershave that drew the predator in him closer. But she held no such fear, not even when she woke one midnight and turned to see him staring at her from her window. She regarded him solemnly, more curious than concerned, then turned on her side, her sweet eyes closing as she went back to sleep.
She was innocence in a world that viewed such virtues with derision, was trust in a society that believed only in suspicion. And soon enough, she was the reason he was drawn to her window in the dead of night, watching her sleep while her brother was out killing. She fascinated him - not as priests or nuns did, with their constantly repeated lies, not as his teammates did with their delicate balances. Her fascination lay in how little he truly touched her, despite the fact that his contribution to her life should have made some difference in her. She should fear him, and yet somehow, she did not. It was a mystery he worried at, gnawing it in the hopes that it might eventually yield answers, but a mystery whose clues only ever came during the witching hours.
