Special Note: This feels a bit more like the beginning of a story to me, but it ended itself there and felt right. I might try to play or write out the rest of it sometime later.
"What is this place again?" Yoji wanted to know, and Ken just grinned, glancing around in amused fascination. It hadn't changed in the slightest since he'd visited last, except to gather a bit of dust on the surfaces. There was a faintly musty odor in the air, but that was ignorable. He walked past Yoji, shoes off and slippered feet sliding against the dusty grain of a wooden floor. Out in the back garden, they could hear the faint clack of bamboo on stone, the trickle of water against the bamboo as it filled. It was a peaceful, soothing sound that Yoji claimed never to have heard in his life. Ken had to wonder if it would drive him crazy in the night. "Well?" Yoji repeated, and Ken glanced back, his hands at the door to the back yard beyond.
"It's a home, Yoji," he said simply, eyes distant for a long minute.
"I thought you said you were an orphan," Yoji countered, frowning at him as he slipped into the slippers he'd brought and padded after Ken. Ken couldn't stop the wistful look that drifted across his face, and knew Yoji noticed, even if he didn't comment on it. Yoji was good at catching things like that, and they generally came up later, when night had descended, they'd both gone to bed, and there were softly-spoken truths to be found in the darkness around them. But this question was calmer, more interested in determining if he thought they were where they were. And what he thought, Ken reflected silently for a moment, wasn't really accurate at all.
"I am," he said finally, reaching to draw Yoji with him out into the backyard, standing before a small, man-made pond. Yoji moved behind him, long arms draping around Ken's shoulders as he nestled their bodies close, both peering at the pond. The view was nice, the closeness nicer, but he was beginning to think there were secrets his lover still kept.
"Then... what is this place?" Yoji finally prompted, drawing a soft laugh from Ken.
"It's where my parents lived before they died. I finally found it again," Ken finally explained, leaning his head against Yoji's shoulder and staring thoughtfully out at the scene before him. "What do you think?"
"It's nice. Do you know the owners?" Yoji asked, impressed that they'd been given free rein in an old house that Ken had tracked down.
"I do," Ken nodded, a secretive smile quirking his lips and his eyes sparkling suddenly. "And so do you."
"I do?" Yoji echoed curiously, reaching up to grasp Ken's arms and turn him. It took a moment before they were face to face, before the amused smile caught at Yoji and led him further along the path of curiosity. "Who are they owners, then?" he wanted to know, although he already had a sneaking suspicion.
"...We are."
