[Harry Potter] Betrayal
Title: Betrayal
Author: Trio Maxwell-Chang
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing or POV: Snape
Special Note: I ended up reading Dominus et Servus again, and came up with this after talking to petermaxwell.
It ached, the betrayal slicing through him far more sharply than he'd ever imagined. He could forgive the defection to Voldemort's camp... Lucius had followed his own example, though Severus was in no position to tell him the truth - that he was a spy for those opposing the Dark Lord. But he thought he'd held more sway over his friend and lover's opinions. Lucius had wanted to hold back, to figure out which side was winning before casting his lot. Severus had agreed in theory, though his conscience had been his downfall.
He'd thought he understood Lucius. He'd thought that he'd solidified his own dominance over the man until he'd never have to question the blond's loyalty. He'd thought so many things, and he was only just now learning how painfully wrong he'd been.
Because it wasn't Severus that Lucius answered to any longer. He honored his Dark Lord, serving him with blind obedience. Somehow, Voldemort had managed to undo everything that Severus had spent two years building, and it ached horribly.
Alone, sans friends, lover, everything he'd ever dared to hold dear, Severus sat outside, his face buried in the book as he tried to forget it all for a few brief moments. He glared at the words, his long fingers sliding over cheap, mass-produced pages and a flexible, paperback cover. He was waiting, wondering what Fate was going to do to him next, what vile twist of the knife was going to be his future.
When Black approached, Severus found it ironically appropriate.
