She chewed her lower lip, glancing up at the unruly black hair thoughtfully. Harry was seated across from her, bent over his book as he pored through the text. Ron had already wandered to bed, an act of desperate defiance that had more to do with his date with Parvati than with his claimed headache. She was amazed that Harry had chosen to remain behind.
He'd been upset recently, not that it was any big surprise. So many miserable things seemed to happen to him. From their first year, he'd always been somehow central to the dramas around them. They'd tried talking about things earlier that evening, but he wasn't in a talking mood. He'd grown more sullen and detached, and she'd finally given up. She'd tried to tell him what she saw. That only made things worse.
Eventually, she'd given up, suggesting they work on homework in a subdued voice. Curls spilling over her shoulders, her legs crossed with the book atop them, she'd buried herself in the work, and allowed him to do the same. Nearly two hours later, as she glanced up at the dark hair and noted the frown beneath, she realized he hadn't smiled once all night.
The knowledge made her stomach fall, weighing her down with the dark knowledge that she couldn't seem to make him smile. She worried her lower lip until it was a vivid red, wracking her brain for anything she hadn't tried. Eventually, she reached out a tentative hand, tapered, ink-stained fingers sliding over his knuckles delicately. The touch remained light, ready to jerk back if he made even the slightest protest.
His eyes rose, staring at the two hands for several minutes before lifting further. Solemn emerald eyes met equally solemn cinnamon ones, holding them captive for another minute as he seemed to consider. Their breathing faded, barely anything as they watched each other, waiting for some sign.
