I think I'm exactly the opposite. Nameless, faceless "extras" in a book can get slaughtered by the dozens, and unless the author makes an effort to bring forth their essential humanity, I don't turn a hair. But the lobby scene in The Matrix, with the terrified, cringing security guard . . .
