It's weird – and totally alien to Dean, given how they never stay anywhere long enough to get to know the 'right people' - how just dropping a name into conversation seems to have Laura dropping her guard and chatting to him like he's been a part of the community far longer than a few weeks, how being 'Lea's friend' makes him familiar and safe. It would be awesome if it didn't feel really weird, wasn't part and parcel of the 'wrong-odd' feeling that's been scurrying around the edges of this 'settling down' thing, leaving him uncomfortable for reasons he can't really explain, which coupled with the contrasting flavour of uncomfortable sparked by how part of his brain – that part which somehow always sounds like Dad - can't help but start thinking about the best ways to exploit that 'in' has him nodding somewhat awkwardly and making vague noises of agreement which aren't really words, the sort of mm, isn't that nice? burble that normally drives him crazy.
When Laura mentions the other children, though, his frown at least is genuine as well as appropriate - “Seriously? No one mentioned that. How come it's not made the papers, all those kids vanishing at once? Seems pretty weird. Y'hear that, Sam?” He raises his voice enough to ensure it carries through to the kitchen, his backglance a concerned you alright in there, Sammy? to go with the are you listening to this? Get your brain on it pronto which, again, sounds more like Dad than himself.
Attention back on Laura he adds “Well, if there's anything we can do...”
