Who: Niko Polov and Annette Flannery (NPC)
What: Annette wants to talk to her daughter’s alpha
When: 3/26, early afternoon
Where: Niko’s dorm
Rating/Warnings: Low
Niko was really confused when she got a text from June’s mom earlier in the day. He couldn’t figure out why she wanted to see him and not her daughter; yes, he knew they weren’t too close and never really had been, but it still just seemed weird to him. He found his mind drifting through the rest of his classes and he rushed back to his dorm where he told her to meet him. Maybe it was good news?
He made a pot of tea and set up a quick cheese tray, complete with some crackers and lunch meat. He was just setting the tray out on the coffee table when he heard a knock on the door. He opened the door and smiled at his future mother-in-law. “Hi, please come in...make yourself at home.”
Annette didn’t want to give Niko too much notice. He didn’t want him to talk to June just yet. She wanted to have a conversation with the boy. June thought she might marry this one. It was adorable but not going to happen. “Hello. I’m glad that you were able to see me on short notice.” She stepped inside and looked around. It was bringing back memories. “We have something to talk about, unfortunately.”
Niko’s smile faded at her tone. He hadn’t thought she was exceedingly friendly when they met at Christmas, but she at least seemed to like him, now that didn’t seem to be the case. He took a deep breath wishing he had texted June against Annette’s wishes, he wished she was there with him. He shut the door and gestured to the sofa, “We can talk over tea, if you’d like,” he said.
“Yes that would be fine,” Annette said as she stepped over to the sofa. It even looked like Niko cleaned up for her. Or, possibly… “Does June clean in here?” she asked dusting off the sofa cushion before having a seat. “Anyway, how long have you owned June?”
Niko followed her to the couch, nodding slightly at her first question. “Since a month or so into the fall semester,” he answered, wringing his hands in his lap. He knew this couldn’t be good if she was asking about their relationship in the alpha/zeta sense; he knew exactly why June was here as a zeta despite her family’s wealth.
“That is quite a while.” Annette watched Niko as he fidgeted. This is why he had to go. Clearly he couldn’t handle June properly. “Unfortunately that is going to come to an end. You are going to release her before the end of the month.”
Niko looked at Annette, thinking maybe he heard her wrong, but he could tell from the look on her face that she was serious. “What? Why?” he asked; he had no intentions of unclaiming her, she was his and he would do anything to keep her safe.
“Because the last thing that June needs is to be coddled. Clearly you can’t handle my daughter the way she needs so you are going to release her.” Annette tilted her head to watch the boy. She wanted to see how he would react.
Niko shook his head. “No I won’t,” he said firmly. “She deserves the best and I intend to give it to her.” He grabbed his knees in frustration before standing up. “Now, I would appreciate it if you would kindly leave.”
“Sit down,” Annette said calmly but forcefully. “I am not done. You are going to release my daughter into the care of someone who can properly take care of her.” A small condescending smile crossed her lips. “Because if you don’t, she won’t get to see her father in the hospital.”
Niko wasn’t going to sit down. He was prepared to kick her out, even if it felt rude for him to do so. But then the rest of what she said sunk in and his fight deflated and it was very obvious in the way he took his seat on the sofa once more. “The hospital?”
“Yes. Her father has bone cancer,” Annette said. “Stage 2. It’s serious but there are options. They are talking about the possibility of needing a bone marrow transplant. As you know a blood relative is his best hope for one. I won’t even allow her to be tested as long as you own her.”
Niko’s head was spinning. He didn’t know what to say. He needed to talk to June. And Thomas. He knew he could trust Thomas to keep her safe and hopefully that would be enough to keep her mother happy. “Why do you hate her so much?” he finally said quietly.
“She was brought into this world as a gift to her father. Since then she has not shown the appropriate gratitude for that fact. June has made her father sad and disappointed. In addition, she has taken attention away from his duties.” Annette smiled at him. “And now that’s over. She will show the proper respect. Clearly you haven’t been able to handle her and now I will find someone who can. I expected better from a Polov.”
Niko looked at her. “What do you know about my family?” he asked. Did she know Dmitri? Was that what she was referring to? Did she expect him to be more like his uncle, like the other alphas June had suffered through.
“We were friends while in school,” Annette said. “That’s neither here nor there. Am I going to have to go back to my husband and tell him that June refused to see him?”
Niko looked down at his hands in his lap. “I will release her before the end of the month,” he said dryly. He didn’t understand how someone could be so cruel.
“Excellent,” Annette said standing. “If you could have her contact home soon, I’ll have some details for her. I can assume that you will fill June in on her father’s condition.” She looked at Niko. “If you don’t mind, I must head out. I have a lot to do. You understand.”
Niko just nodded. He didn’t know what to do or say. He glanced at the clock. June was still in class for another hour. It took him a moment to stand and walk her to the door. “Send my best to Mr. Flannery.”
“I’ll let him know you are thinking of him,” Annette said as she closed the door behind her.
