The simple sound of her name, roughened and unbroken from Genma's cracked lips, shattered down Rina's spine from bowed shoulders through to white-knuckled fingertips. Safety, it told her, and his gentle kiss repeated. As safe as she could be, here and now. Held and protected, sheltered and unequivocally known, the last fragments of tight-wound terror released their clenching grip on Rina's chest. With a few last spasms of shuddering limbs too chilled and overworked to loosen without complaint, she uncurled into Genma's threadbare but welcome embrace.
A soft rainfall pattered against the leaves outside, the sound muted by the swathes of enveloping chakra that shielded them from view. Genma's armor was uncomfortably angular against her bruised ribs, and his bandages scraped against the abraded skin on her cheek, but she wouldn't have moved for anything.
Eventually, despite reddened dry eyes and a heart still tripping in a relentless beat, Rina began to slip down into uneasy sleep. |
