"What did you do to me?" Genma pleaded. It had to have been the sieve. Kakashi's rough, overly energetic, poorly focused medical jutsu. Genma tried to think through the cacophony of pain that echoed in his skull. What kind of error could Kakashi have made with the sieve that would account for this? The possibilities were universally dire. This could be a brain bleed, if Kakashi's jutsu had torn some tiny blood vessel. It could be something more like a grey matter contusion, if he'd lost control of the depth of the jutsu's focus. It could be spinal-cord damage high enough it was inching into the brainstem itself, although if that were the case Genma should be having numbness, paralysis. He pulled one hand away from his head and tried touching his thumb to each fingertip in turn, relieved that he could complete the task.
Dogs had appeared from nowhere. Summoned dogs, no doubt. Genma remembered some of them from that mission two years ago. He winced and tried to roll onto his back, spinning in a vortex of vertigo until he felt sick. One of the dogs whined and nudged his leg with its nose.
What had he done? Lit a fire and given himself the worst headache of his life, for half a minute. Just barely begun to channel his chakra, and nearly died from the pain. It could be an organic brain injury, but Genma was too well-schooled a medic to buy that. Evidence pointed to chakra coil damage.
In the brain.
Fuck.
The dog was still there, lying down next to Genma now to brace him with its own body. It whined again. Genma lifted one limp hand and settled it into the fur, not really petting so much as simply holding on.
He tried to breathe evenly, short of breath as if they were at elevation. Tried to come up with some kind of plan. "We-- need to go home," he said, not even sure Kakashi was listening.
