"Not nice, hmm?" Hayate let his voice stay low, almost a whisper. It was easier, less of a strain on his throat. "Remind me to always be nice to you, then." The inspecific answer did nothing for his curiosity. He tried to remind himself that being nosy was rude.
He knew other people often had some serious bones to pick with ex-team-mates, though he himself had never had that problem. He was good at being inoffensive. People rarely got upset at him. That was why he'd never had a steady partner for missions. He was more valuable as a free agent to temporarily replace unavailable team members, because he could get along with just about anyone.
He glanced up at Kotetsu, and raised an eyebrow at the faint flush that was clear on the other's still pale cheeks. He decided he did not want to know what had re-ignited the stupid crush, and sighed a slow sigh across their hands. The rain was coming down steadily. A gust of wind veered in abruptly, and Hayate winced away from the blast of cold, closer to Kotetsu.
For a few moments, there was silence in the little hollow. He was wondering what in the world would make easy-going Kotetsu react so strongly, and what exactly Kotetsu defined as "not nice."
Hayate had pretty much stopped shivering by now, but Kotetsu was still shaking every so often. Despite that, his fingers, cupped between Hayate's palms, were a healthy pink and definitely not as cold as they had been.
"I hope," he muttered, "that the rain does not last long." He tried not to say it, but the question spilled out anyway. "So, what did he do?" |
