Rena noticed the slight flush that crept onto Thomas's cheeks and she wondered if he hadn't meant to tell her that quite yet. She tilted her head slightly as she regarded him but he seemed to regain his composure. It seemed as though this morning she had the dubious pleasure of making Thomas supremely uncomfortable.
"That makes sense," she offered when Thomas gave his explanation, attempting to conceal her own uncertainty. If she had been concerned about her place at the pub before, it seemed all the more likely that Rena would find herself in an uncomfortable position if she was staying at the pub. Again, she shoved those thoughts aside, reminding herself to let things happen as they would.
Rena glanced at the breakfast she had put together that morning, realizing that she had still eaten very little herself. There was still plenty left for Bridget, of course, but she probably should eat a bit more. "Bridget seemed to take to her," she observed, keeping her voice as neutral as possible. "She upset her yesterday but she seemed to like her. How do you suppose she'll take it?" How did a motherless girl react to her mother suddenly reappearing? It would be interesting to see, without a doubt.
