Rena shrugged her shoulders, uncertain if she agreed or not. "You must do what you feel is right," she said. "I have no doubt that you will be devoted and kind to her regardless of her situation. You give people the benefit of the doubt, or else I likely wouldn't be standing here, but just be careful, if not for your own sake, then for Bridget's." Rena paused, realizing that she was crumbling a piece of toast in her hand instead of eating it and she willed herself to stop.
She couldn't help it if the whole situation made her uneasy, that she had found the skittish young woman difficult to trust. She hoped that she was sincere but how could she be sure? How could she trust anyone from the brothel? Well, at the very least, Rena intended to keep her eyes and ears open, just in case. After all, one couldn't be too careful and if this woman broke Bridget's or Thomas's heart, so help her.
"You know her better than I do," Rena finally conceded reluctantly, putting a piece of the toast in her mouth to conclude the thought.
