Rena, to her credit, actually listened to Thomas's story with a surprising calmness. After all, she had gotten what she wanted; he was talking to her, revealing things he probably wouldn't have otherwise. In a way, this subdued Rena because she had so many things she'd rather not be forced to reveal, either.
"I'm sorry," Rena said sincerely when she heard that Thomas had loved this woman so deeply and lost her so swiftly. It was no wonder that Bridget was so precious to him, even despite the fact that she was a wonderful girl. "It must have been hard." Rena carefully set down the spoon, as though realizing for the first time that she was still holding it.
Of course, even if her temper had diminished, the unanswered questions did not disappear even in light of the new information. "Thomas," Rena continued quietly, the force gone from her voice. "Was there someone before her? I mean, before Bridget's mother." She couldn't help but ask, thinking about Abigail's story.
